Are we the asshole?

So recently we were contacted by a single female, photo verified, with multiple meet verifications (although none visible).

We have been chatting off site for a while and things seemed ok, but she said something that made no sense and got us wondering. Then we discovered her WhatsApp profile picture was from a random Instagram page.

When confronted, she said it was just for her own anonymity, but obviously this was a red flag for us, so blocked all contact.

Were we right to do so? Has this happened to anyone else?

Here and There

Was the picture of her face? If she was pretending to be someone she’s not I’d say you’re right to think it’s a red flag, and you’re defo not the asshole.

If it was a random pic and not a person you could have overreacted slightly, possibly

We asked her if the picture was of her and she said yes. Then we sent a screenshot of the IG post that she was using and then she said ok it's not really me

No sounds like you did the real thing. She could still be genuine and just ultra cautious but then probably going to make you jump through hoops to meet anyway and hard to trust (especially with veris hidden). I've met ladies like this a long time ago they even blocked everyone straight after meets to avoid veris. Also had somebody try to [not allowed this word - but means get money out of me by making threats] me so best be cautious.

Didn't you get a face pic before going to WhatsApp? I think really need to be careful going to WhatsApp as links to Facebook and Instagram and real life. If somebody really wants to cause trouble that is the door in. Kik, Telegram, Discord are better options if you really want to take chat off the platform.

Bit weird that she chose a picture of someone else to use as her profile picture rather than just a general photo of something other than a face, I never have my face as my WhatsApp profile picture and I know lots of other people who don’t either. Staying anonymous doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be someone else. Another example of why it’s best to have a video call with someone as soon as possible…

Good point. Yes video call was our next step until this happened!

From reading what transpired you absolutely did the right thing. I always trust my gut especially on here it has not steered me wrong yet. I can get put off by silly things but that doesn't make me an arsehole lol it makes me wary which has to be a good thing. People have to understand not to be creepy or disingenuous they must know it wouldn't end well.

Going by the sound of it, you couldve been speaking to a 70 yr old guy thinking its a female so id say no, you arent

My WhatsApp pic is Nicholas Cage. Plenty of people choose to exercise caution on apps that sell the data and if you want to call that a red flag then that's fine but it's normal.

If the pic she was showing was meant to be her and she first claimed it was then yes you did the right thing.

On here I don't interact with anyone if their pics aren't them.If I see pics I think I've seen before or look too good I reverse image them. There are quite a few that don't belong to the profile that is showing them. There is no excuse that makes it okay.

Nope Def not the asshole

Consider ‘ Veri’s’ are frequently made up on here .. people can create more than one profile and actually add their own Veri’s ( quite the ‘ sad act’ ) thing to do IMHO but there you go . Fab is full of this type these days unfortunately :/

It’s becoming more of a reality that these days your only ‘ real’ way of knowing you are talking to someone ‘genuine’ is to do do by video chat . Only takes a few minutes to say hi ..instant authentication and no endless message ping pong too ..

a sign of the times and the need to use the technology to your advantage .

Did the right thing, even if she was real and genuine, it's strange to use a different persons image and that alone would create a trust / transparency issue.

Quick 30 second video call once you add them to WhatsApp is what we usually do. Very quickly s out anyone not genuine

My rule of Fab: if you have doubts or they are not for you then block and move on. Life is simpler that way.
