Product key for excel/word

Stupid question but bear with.

Brought laptop couple of years ago and now I need a product key for Excel and Word.

Do I have to pay for this or can I get for free anywhere?

Apologies for daft question, I'm a bit of a technophobe.

Basically that's the licence so in practice yes you will need to pay for it. It would make sense to buy your own new copy though I'd expect or get a Microsoft office 365 subscript

Oh right. Where would I purchase one from? Any idea of price (just so I dont get ripped off)

You could look at alternatives to Microsoft Office products, but in all honesty if you are a technophobe I would say it might be easier for you to look at an Office 365 subscription.

Microsoft 365 is about £60 per year from the Microsoft site but that only looks good if you use the various offered software a lot, like several times a week, otherwise as suggested there are alternatives like Open Office.

Thats a bit pricey for what I was hoping to use it for, which is very little to be honest! Think I'll go with Open Office as I rarely use it, thank you

As is the online version of office. Go to office.com and sign up

I use WPS Office, very similar to Microsoft Word, Excel etc. Free for basic versions, which have pretty much all the main functions available for no cost.

it is possible to scan your computer to find the registration key.

a programme called belarc can do that for you. as long as you had the original copy at some point it will find it on your computer.

the new versions of word/excel, is £119 home and student version. download from microsoft.

google, sheets etc. is compatible and is free.

I use WPS, the basic free version for word processing and spreadsheets, and it's very similar to MS office.

I think I've got MS office on an old laptop, but never use it.

I hate the idea of a subscription. My copy of Windows Office suite 2007 has been battling on for years.

I don't suppose you have any old paper work or cd casing/packets related to the laptop? Or a sticker underneath with the MS office product code? Or is it worth searching for files containing password, PW, conduct code, license or something like that incase the previous owner has saved the details in a file on the computer?

Do you already have the Excel and Word that just needs authentication? If you just want a good office suite - LIBRE is functional

There is a product called OpenOffice available for free.

It looks very similar to Microsoft office and has all the functionality of MS Office but doesn’t cost a penny.

If you do a search you’ll soon find it.

It doesn’t normally want to save documents in .doc format so you will have to change the file type when you create a new document or spreadsheet, but I find it works really well.

Has the laptop just upgraded itself to Windows 11? I'd noticed elsewhere that it tries to upsell you office 365 after that, and it may be those applications that are opening, instead of your licensed versions which are still on the laptop, if that makes sense. The other thing that may be of use is that depending on your employer/educational establishment's Microsoft licence you may be allowed to use that
