Vintage glam is always a good shout.

Some people don't dress up at all, others make a massive effort. In general I wouldn't go with a burlesque costume itself, save that for the performers.

Above all it needs to be something that makes you feel empowered and confident. Burlesque is all about embracing your own sexuality, so something that makes you feel confident, walk tall and have a sassy strut and you're good!

Same rules about sexy and sassy but more is less when it comes to burlesque, it's about the art of the tease so trashy/slutty is (as you've pointed out) out.

Vintage looking is still the name of the game here...

An embellished corset and tie on bustle can work really well, with stockings and suspenders and matching underwear of course.

I tend to layer underwear so as I undress (either in a club or onstage) I can keep up the tease.

Pasties under a bra, something over the bra, underbust corset, tie skirt or bustle, thong with suspenders and stockings, french knickers over the thong... that kind of thing.
