When I've done anal before (and I'm writing as someone who doesn't actually enjoy giving it), it was always very spontaneous. I.e. we never talked about it before hand, were already having normal sex, and it was asked for in the moment and I obliged.

I think sometimes when you set out to do 'x' it can lead to freezing. So just go with the flow. If you want it there and then, take it. If not, leave it for another time.

I would also say +1 to using lube.
