I work in Telecoms and can tell you that your average joe public will not be able to track you from just knowing your mobile phone number. Most they can do is google it which you can do too and see if you get any hits.

Obviously there is a lot of tracking information you give out while your phone is switched on but that is only accessible to the network (or any specific apps you have installed and enabled to share - that includes Google/Apple).

Don't install any apps that you get asked without knowing what those are and clicking on links can also potentially expose you but just giving out a phone number does not provide details of where you are.

Also, note that SMS messages have the potential to be seen by network engineers who manage the network which is why it is better to use WhatsApp, Telegram, etc. as conversations are encrypted between devices.

Hope that helps.

Dealers use burner phones as they are pay as you go and not registered are to your address, unlike pay monthly. You simply get a sim and buy a phone, usually a cheap one. If they change numbers it is through paranoia that the police may have the number and are monitoring movements via network.

Honestly. If someone wants to hack you, you will not know you are hacked until they want you to know - whether via your phone, pc, smartwatch, tv, roomba, car, fridge - whatever it is that has internet connection.

Central

At worst, something like Pegasus can be installed on a phone, which gives the installer the ability to track you, view everything and more - but it's not available to the public. GCHQ likely has similar abilities.

Otherwise, unless your network provider is tricked into revealing your home address, or someone finds you by an internet search - including showing Facebook info - the public can't find you, if they've installed nothing on your phone

N Peterborough.

Just use a burner phone with a cheap throwaway sim.

Easy to ditch possessive guys that way (yes, even as a couple), no worries about apps leaking info or suggesting friends etc. We had this with Kik, suggested friends to us which meant we were being suggested to other friends & family!

It's surprising what can be found out from googling mobile numbers esp if you use it for business.

Most phones these days allow 2 sims to be fitted, so you just fit a PAYG sim in as your Fab Phone.

Yes, your mobile phone can be used to track you if you are a government agency, but not Joe public.

People use so many apps to allow themselves to be tracked anyway. Google, Facebook, Snapchat etc.
