Hi, just a quick question I hope someone can help me with.

Is it posible for people to 'un-pixelate' your pics?

This may be a silly question, I just need my mind set to rest on this.K.x

Sorry, however, I would like to draw attention to the recent case of a paedophile being caught as his picture was "restored" by the authorities to the extent that he was recognised when the restored pic was posted in the media.

It can be done, it takes a very very good computer and software way beyond the budget and computer power of most people.

To be honest i can see why the authorities would do it for cild sex cases but i doubt anyone on fab could be bothered (however sexy the OP is).

The answer is Yes, I used the software at Uni, and quite common in Computer Forensics.

Yes- it was more in the realms of Fab that I was thinking about rather than anything else.

And you're right, I don't think anyone would go to the bother of it if it's a process that is as involved as that. K x

I am sure no one will object to you cropping your head off as long as you post such sexy pics.

You are stunning and no one would tire of looking at those headless pics.

Not that i am suggesting that there is anything wrong with our head / face or anything else.

(I do know where you are coming from).

This was a swirl effect, nothing to do with pixellation

If we're talking about pixellation, it has nothing to do with computer power, or forensics. Pixellation is replacing a group of pixels with a block of pixels of the same colour. This is impossible to undo, regardless of the power of the machines involved.

Other image filters can be reversed, as proved with the 'swirl paedophile' case, but true pixellation can not.

Ok so maybe this is not as clear cut as I thought, there seems to be some differing opinions about this one.

I think that it depends a lot on what kind of file the photo is saved as...

Some - especially a .tiff file can have the original data intact with the pixelation added over the top.

.jpg files are much simpler and have the original data replaced by the pixel blocks, so can't really be undone - though some powerful programs can "guess" what was possibly there originally.

Anybody - do correct me if I've got this wrong!

JPEGs are actually very complex - the code to encode/decode a JPEG image is fiendish!

Of course though, with any image format which stores the changes in the file itself, those changes can be reversed.

And yes, interpolation can be used to guess the missing pixels. This will never be perfect though.

If the OP was worried about their identity becoming known from a 'depixellated' image, then I would suggest drawing a white block over their entire face.
