Disappearing People...

What is the polite thing to do when you are mid way through arranging a meet, or have tentative plans, and the other person/people go AWOL? How long do you wait until you start making alternative plans?

We usually wait until the time they were supposed to meet us has passed.

However, this poses a problem as often that time we have taken waiting for them is valuable free time in which we could have done something else.

So, in answer to your question, ermm, I dunno!!

Well guess depends how well we know them. Frankly if no set plans made and we didn't know them very well or only had contact through site I'd start looking almost straight away. We wouldn't make plans with anyone for a few days but get ball rolling just in case.

Do you have a contact number or email for them? I'd send a quick polite message asking how they are and if all is ok. If you don't get a reply after a day or so I'd send another polite message saying sorry to bother you but are we still planning to meet or shall we postpone it.

I'd check if they've been online and not replied. Then I'd give it 48 hours and after that I assume they've lost interest.

I think a polite reminder message which goes unanswered a couple of hours after being read is as good as a 'no thanks' Not sure whats so difficult about actually messaging 'No Thanks' but there you go- theres nowt so strange as annonymous people

This is my problem, I don't get many free evenings so it's really annoying when people just...vanish! I could be meeting someone less flaky!

If the plans were tentative and they haven't gone on holiday or something then I think you can make other plans.

I usually say if we are meeting on Wed send me a message or text on Tues to let me know its still ok for you, if I dont hear from you Ill assume plans have changed and Ill make other arrangements.... gives someone a get out clause but gives me chance to make other plans

If they've been online since you last messaged them then definitely look for an alternative.

Other than that trust your instincts - you've already described them as flaky so is it worth hanging on for a reply? If they get back in touch when you've made alternative plans tell them straight they disappeared so you made other plans. If they don't like it, it's their problem not yours.
