Make you first message polite and make sure you have read the persons profile because if it’s obvious you haven’t chances are your messages will be ignored

It's difficult to answer your question really because everyone has different requirements.

Sometimes a conversation can start by comm on a forum post, sometimes people get to know each other in chat and other times a pm can start off a chat.
