It would probably be better to explore a discussion of sex more broadly, than going in for the kill 'Are you swingers?'. It's probably unrealistic to expect people who aren't comfortable with you to suddenly tell all. People tend to give and earn trust incrementally, so consider what you are going to share of equal significance of 2 people sharing this with you.

And be honest about why you want to know. If you have a sexual desire, then you could express your interest, without confrontation but beware.

People have their own expectations of the boundaries for different types of relationships in their lives.

Consider that you could pursue sexual interests with others, where you don't jeopardise existing relationships, nor people's desire for discretion and privacy.

Obviously at present people are not meeting as the UK is in lockdown, so this is hypothetical. Live intelligently and aim for a simple life

Interesting question and no idea from our immediate social circle mainly due to type of communication that would take place.

Outside of this (on holiday) our conversation could be quite different so more potential/ noticeable to discover through non verbal communication (from experience)

Ask them if they saw the C4 documentary on swinging and if so what they thought? If they look at each other knowingly that might give you a clue. Might be a good icebreaker to discuss swinging and judge whether they might be interested or not.
