So let's just say I had a fuck buddy that was a perfect package, funny, good to spend time with and both on the same wavelength. What would people suggest if 9/10 there was abit of an iffy smell down there on the female? I can understand after a night out or a long day but straight after a bath/shower? It's 100% not an sti......if I was in this situation.

Bacterial vaginosis. Tell her to get checked out as it is USUALLY easy to treat with antibiotics and then all will be roses.

As we don't have a nose down there it can be hard for us to realise. When I had it my boyfriend didn't let on and it was after a smear test that it was diagnosed.

I watched an old embarrassing illnesses episode last night & a girl on it had the issue of a fishy smell. They did swabs that were clear and then told her to use a ph balanced wash or no soap at all as she was over washing with harsh soaps due to her paranoia and they were getting rid of the good bacteria that she needed.

Is this what BV is?

As we don't have a nose down there it can be hard for us to realise. When I had it my boyfriend didn't let on and it was after a smear test that it was diagnosed.

Broaching it is difficult if you don't (hypothetically) know her very well. The longer you've known her, the easier it will get, but it's tough to say 'your pussy whiffs, get thee to a doctors' to anyone really."

Ah, in that case you might be a bit OCD and the smell is her natural 'lady' smell. I'm not sure you can resolve this without getting another guy to have a sniff.

Yep! All the subtlety of a flying sledgehammer! Look - if the 'relationship' is strong enough, you should be able to sit her down and tell her straight in the best way you can and make clear you are telling her cos you are concerned for HER.

In other words, grow a pair (my thanks to Mr J Kyle for that one) and tell her. Yes, she may well be upset initially 0 who really wants to be told they have a smelly fanny or cock FFS???? BUT... in the long run she will think far more of you......

This can actually come from being overclean,if you wash too much it causes the ph of the vagina to change thus causing the smell,but like everyone has pointed out It's not something you know for yourself,find a tactful way to tell her

Dont want to embarrass you, not sure how to say it...but sometimes when Im up close and personal your nether regions smell a bit different to what they usually do, dont mean dirty or that youve not washed or anything.....

Heard that it can sometimes be a sign of a bit of an infection or 'lady trouble' and thought youd want to know so that you can get it checked out...

I've had this dilemma on more than one occasion, BV is not uncommon, but it has nothing to do with lack of cleanliness, in fact I'm led to believe that women who 'over clean' by 'douching' can cause it. It's a lack of good bacteria in the vagina.

I only know this because I looked into it before taking the decision to inform someone when in similar circumstances to the Op.

I recommend that you find a way to tell her, as long as you believe she's secure enough as a person to hear it from you.

Thats very true and theres loads of other factors that can cause it too,none of them to do with anything nasty at all

Then she will be more pissed off with them and if she asks you to confirm it, you say well it's slightly smells I just thought you had BV that is easily cured with antibiotics!!! have had this bv myself, its treated with either one dose of 4 tabs or a weeks worth of tabs...... made me feel crap for about two days feeling sick etc, however sorted it.... was told as many have mentioned being too clean kills of the good bacteria. my gp has given me specific lotion which can be used on the skin but she told me to shower with it, and its lovely, she also said no females should use soaps as they can cause many infections.... !!!

Sounds like B V and trust me unless she has no sense of smell she will soon know.

Sometimes there can be a discharge with it, she doesn't neccessarily need antibiotics as there is a product from chemists which involes inserting a gel for about a week.

This should take care of it but it can come back and if it does she should use it as often as she wants.

Always best to go to the docs to have a test just to be safe.

She should also stop using any scented soaps and try only showering once a day.also don't use wipes after a pee.

Boots do a squeezy soap for femine hygene.

It's not contagious just an imbalance in natural bacteria.

If it becomes a persistent prob the doc can put the gel on prescription as a box is around £9 - £11 at least it used to be and I can't imagine it's gone down in price.she shouldn't worry that it happens because she doesn't wash because it's more the opposite and all the wash products can upset the balance. Could be other issues to like stress.

Just tell here because I can't believe she won't already know.

i was told by a guy i used to meet off here that i smelt a bit,was pissed off with him at first but in the long run was grateful as i now know what the smell was and how to treat it when it flares up. i get antibiotics off the doctor on repeat as well as the gel.

I just wanted to add that left untreated, bacterial vaginosis can lead to further complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, which is very painful in itself and can cause irregular, heavy bleeding and in turn can lead to problems getting pregnant, higher chance of miscarriage, and it has been suggested that it potentially causes higher suseptability to getting STD's.

It isn't just a case of a 'smelly fanny' and is something that needs treating as it is also a huge whack to the confidence when it reaches the point that you KNOW you've got it and have to wait for treatment to work

Unfortunately I know as I suffer with it regularly and seem to get it after every different person I have sex with, even with using condoms. (Pretty shit when you're a swinger!)

Its embarrassing and as I said makes you feel pretty crap about yourself but i'd much rather be told if someone thought there was a problem and I didn't know....

If I s BV its from over cleaning. I have cervical cancer few years ago and became obsessed with being clean ' down there' and the more I washed the worse it was it was a vicious cycle as you instinctively wash more. I went back to docs eventually convinced my cancer was back and was told I had effectively done this to myself. Now I don't use perfumed products and have been free of it for years now
