Is spot reduction a myth?

I would say that yes it is a myth, this myth is particularly persistent because everyone wants it to be true.

Spot reduction refers to the claim that fat in a certain area of the body can be targeted for reduction through exercise of specific muscles in that desired area, for example, exercising the abdominal muscles in an effort to lose weight in or around one midsection.

The reason I dont believe it, is cos you lose body fat all over the body not just in one targeted area, by time and effort you see a whole body change.

What is your view on it?

Liposuction is much quicker and you get to lie down for it. Exercise is too much like hard work.

Certain areas of body fat are harder to lose than others. Stomach fat being one of them. The idea of concentrating on an area is that whilst you will get an overall body benefit it’s using specific techniques to the area you're targeting

When i lose weight i don't lose it all over. Only areas where i work out the most so i can believe it works

Op likes the tough questions.

As I understand it.

short answer. Not really but Your mileage will vary.

Long answer

Body is a series of interdependent systems.

Blood circulates resources to all systems. Resources released one area can be consumed by another entirely independently.

eg Fat stores in belly are released and consumed in the legs.

Muscle is is built by another system, dependent (but not) that also uses resources from wherever available, including the breakdown of other non core muscle if insufficient free protein is available.

People have more fat cells in certain location through genetics and eating habits during growth periods. The fat cells are therefore present even when not holding fat.

So... spot exercise builds localised muscle under a fat pad. Fat will break down across body in response to exercise, not just in the fat pad you are targetting. Increased blood flow to an area in response to the exercise (damage) WILL indirectly increase blood flow around the fat cells in that area but as the mechanism operates across the entirety fat elsewhere may have been released to already meet the need. If you have low reserves elsewhere the fat pad may be the best source of energy available and therefore be reduced by ANY exercise not just spot stuff.

Final point. Building up muscle under a fat pad makes the pad more obvious, possibly causing the host NOT have fish and chips on way home after gym... ultimately reducing the fat available and reducing the pad...

It doesn't work, as another poster has said, exercising a particular part like the abdomen just builds muscle there, rather than burn fat there.

The way to lose fat is simple, burn more calories per day than you take in: a calorie deficit.

I also think I read that the first bits of fat you put on are the last that'll shift.

Yes I have and no, it isn't.

Oh that surprises me that it didn't hurt, watched it done on TV and it looked a bit grim, glad you had good results and no pain. "

I really should point out that it was done under general anaesthetic (do some people not have GA? Stuff that). Had to wear compression garment for approx 2 weeks. Some bruising but not actually painful.

1night in hospital and walked home afterwards.

Agreed.. spot reduction is a total myth, which is backed by science
