I stared at my phone screen feeling only mildly put out.

"Soz karnt make it 2nite. Friday babes?" read the text.

But it was a toss up as to which was more horrifying, the spelling and grammar or being called "babes". A lucky escape from a disastrous blind date by the look of it. I pulled my diary up on screen,quickly added a commitment for Friday night which read simply "busy" and with a totally clean conscience texted him back apologies for being busy on Friday.

Just as I pressed send, Sonia appeared at my office door. Head of HR and universally renowned for being a stickler for protocol to most people - but we'd known each other as teenagers at school and apart from both of us showing mild consternation when I'd started at the company, a quick trip to the wine bar and we'd formed a strong alliance based purely around total non disclosure of our embarrassing sixth form years.

"Morning!" I greeted her looking suspiciously at the takeaway coffees in her hand. "Should I be wary of this stranger bearing gifts".

"Absolutely!" Sonia plonked herself down on the edge of my desk and handed me a latte. "But it's Costa so you're going to fall for it. You always do."

I groaned.

"Go on - what do you want?"

"Big date tonight", she said. "Mario says he can fit me in at 5pm to do my hair but I'm supposed to be babysitting a job interview... Could you cover for me?"

I looked at her perfect hair and grinned. This guy she really liked I could tell. He was an army officer and this was some kind of officers do. It was a big thing to be invited apparently although I was a bit hazy as to why. But I could tell it was important to her.

I rolled my eyes. "OK what kind of interview is it?"

"Tech" she said wincing.

I mock banged my head on the desk and looked at her incredulously.

"I know, I know," she said hurriedly. "But Gerald and Ian will be handling the tech questions... You just do the fuzzy ones and you know... "

"Be the token woman on the interview panel?" I dead panned.

"Absolutely" she said. "He's the only candidate for the job anyway it looks like."

"How come?" I asked puzzled as our company attracted many applicants normally.

"It's the tech, it's unusual, get the feeling Gerald and Ian don't even understand it themselves."

I smiled, "So the 'fuzzy' questions will be the hardest thing he faces?"

"Absolutely," she grinned back.

"Mate," I said. "You owe me!"

"Uh, huh," she jumped off my desk and brushed her skirt down. "Thanks Bella" and she headed for the door. "Hope it's not too dreary." Her brow creased with faux concern. "I'll send you his application and the job spec."

"You know full well it's going to be like watching paint dry, " I mock glared as she grinned and zoomed off.

I pushed my hair back off my face and lost myself in my work. What with meetings and some complex emails it was quartee to five before I knew it. I hastily printed out the CV deciding I could skim read it in the lift. I really hoped this guy had some interesting hobbies...

Well the CV was pretty much incomprehensible but lots of techy words that actually seemed to match the ones in the job spec so this wasn't going to be too hideous. Ooh look and scuba diving as a hobby that I could ask about.

The lift pinged open and I strode out only to find i'd gone down to the ground floor not up. Aaargggh. I turned on my heel and went back in followed by a tallish blond guy.

"Wrong floor" I explained unnecessarily.

He grinned. "Which is the right floor?"

"Ten," I smiled back as this handsome stranger pushed the button for me. But then clocked the large gold wedding ring. As ever, all the good ones were taken.

Still, I let him gesture me out first of the lift and hold the door open for me into the company's reception.

I waved at Grace the receptionist and headed into the board room. Ian and Gerald were already there. A little bit old school these two and rather fond of the sound of their own voice. But Ian got stuff done and Gerald seemed to know everyone in an old-boys, pass-the port kind of way.

"Ah Isabella," boomed Gerald. "Come to keep us in hand, marvellous."

I dumped my stuff next to him and then noticed that as well as the chair Ian was sat in and one for the candidate there was another spare.

"We've got an expert in too," Gerald explained waving a hand at the chair. "Consultant chap."

The door swung open and Grace came in carrying a tray of the special tea/coffee cups reserved for visitors and bustled about putting it down on the table and serving drinks. She poured my coffee first and I realised I was desperate for a drink.

"And here he is. Hello Robert!" boomed Gerald again. (He really only operated at one volume.)

I looked up in one motion, expecting to greet the consultant's face - but finding my eyes seemed to have only got as far as his chest. Another foot up to smile hello.

And a hell of a shock. Rob stood in front of me. I'd half expected the expert to be the smiley blonde guy from the lift. But bloody hell, a blast from my past stood a few feet away and offering me a hand to shake.

Oh god I'd best not be blushing.

I stood up to shake hello, feeling his strong firm grip. His blue eyes showed surprise but none of my own discomfort. Damn him he always was super confident.

He'd moved onto chat to Gerald and Ian. Grace said she'd go get the candidate and we sat down.

The blond guy appeared. Ah so he was the interviewee. Matt according to the paperwork. It was handshakes and paper flapping for a while and I was glad I only had to throw in a few random questions here and there.

My head was racing as I watched Rob asking most of the fine detail questions. It had been 10 years. A brief but enjoyable fling during a 6 month posting. Oh gosh. Very, very enjoyable in fact I remembered - as the memories of hot and steamy nights started to surface.

Concentrate Bella! I told myself sternly.

Rob was intelligent but in a laconic, laid back way. But he knew his stuff. He and Matt seemed to be on the same page. I could tell from Rob's reactions that his questions were stretching Matt but that he was handling them well. The Rob I knew had no time for fools. The tell tale tics were there in his left eye when Ian and Gerald posed a few questions and Matt's body language suddenly became nervous as he tried to answer a nonsensical question in a sensible fashion.

The interview was finally over. More handshaking and a few nods and winks to indicate the job was his. Matt left looking pleased.

Now what to do. Didn't want to let Rob go without a proper hello. But equally didn't exactly want Gerald and Ian to be there.

I gathered my papers up thoughtfully and slowly, noticing Rob was doing the same. He hadn't changed much, a few wrinkles round the eyes but otherwise he looked in amazing shape.

Thoughts of how his body felt close up hit me. I bit my lip. Get a grip woman or you'd be throwing yourself on the board room table yelling "Take Me" at this rate. So not cool.

I shook my head and realised he was now saying goodbye to G and I. As he turned to me, I scooped up my files and found myself telling his chest that I was headed back to my office now too. Damn he was tall.

Silent through reception, bid Grace goodnight and out to the lifts. I pressed the button.

"Well hello stranger," he drawled "long time no see. You haven't changed a bit"

His voice was low, deep and unhurried. I knew I was flushing - desire rising through me.

And I knew he was aware of just how discomforted I felt. He always did. He saw through me in ways others didn't. Part of his appeal.

Amused blue eyes looked down at me.

"You look the same too," I replied, waited a beat and added "with a bit less hair maybe."

And turned to jab at the lift button again.

I heard him chuckling behind me and remembered with a grin how much we bantered back then. A non stop game of kik tennis batted back and forth. Matches lasting days. Social media was a joy!

As I pressed the button his hand reached out and with one finger he stroked the soft white skin at the base of my palm.

His touch was electric. The fleeting pressure on my pulse point coursed through the veins in my arm and my stomach somersaulted. I could feel the want emanating from within. I stood stock still and closed my eyes. Aware of his proximity but trying to regain control of my body.

The lift doors pinged open and I hastily dropped my hand from the call button. It was a good job it was empty as I was blocking the way. Lifetime habits kicked in and I shook my head out of this reverie and walked in.

He followed.

I took up position against one mirrored wall with arms crossed in front of me. I daren't look up at him.

I could see he still worked out. Muscled shoulders filling his white shirt.

"Which floor?" he asked.

"Eleven" I replied and noticed he pressed only that floor button.

"Wet?" a question in one succinct word.

I bit my lip.

"What do you think?" I shot back.

He grinned infuriatingly and mock shrugged.

"Hard to tell from over here."

The lift stopped at my floor and I strode out.

Decision made in a split second.

"Best come and find out, hadn't you?" I said softly without looking at him and walked away.

As I paused to swipe in to the deserted floor I was aware he was stood right behind me. The skin on the back of my neck yearned for his kiss. I blinked. He was like a conductor, bringing the different parts of my body alive one by one by a glance.

I walked down the corridor, him just a pace behind, my destination the large photocopying room, a relic from a bygone time that for some inexplicable reason still remained in place.

I pushed the door and let it swing for him to catch.

He closed it behind him and I heard the lock click. We stood in the dark. Feeling giddy (what was I doing?!) I rested my hands on the empty shelf in front of me.

He moved behind me. I was conscious he was millimeters away. Almost aware of his body heat he was that close but still not touching. Our breathing began to synchronise. I swallowed.

Hands touched the top of my head and smoothed my hair from crown to each ear and then scooped it up into a ponytail. I felt his breath on the top of my head and then ever so lightly down to the base of my neck. I shivered with longing. My whole body waiting for his touch on my skin.

One of those moments that seems to last a lifetime. The glorious knowing, without a doubt, what was to come - but the revelling in that time-space where it hadn't happened yet. An almost out of body experience. A moment of sheer perfection almost too intense to bear. I ached for his touch. My existence seemed to be solely to feel him physically.

His head bent and lips pressed briefly just above the collar of my blouse. I felt him breathe in my scent as he lifted his head again. Hands let my hair drop back in place and his chin rested on top of my head.

"Miss me?" he whispered and I could only nod dumbly in reply.

A tiny light kiss to the top of my head, so gentle.

His body pressed against mine and I leaned back into him. No words, just feeling his presence.

The calm before the storm.

He lifted his right hand and crooked the forefinger letting his finger nail trace down the outline of my cheek bone. Then rising from chin to bottom lip, brushing over its full outline as I opened my mouth.

His hand dropped from mouth to chin again twisting my head up and to the side. He lowered his head towards mine, eyes like searchlights as he gazed down at me. My lips parted. I could feel the warmth of his breath against my face but he'd still not made contact.

It had been too long.

My hands reached up to loosen his tie as he continued to kiss me passionately.
