I’m driving for a German agency at the moment & part of my contract is that if I’m on the road for more than ten consecutive days I can stay in a hotel on every third day. I was in the Nottingham area & having parked up I decided to stay in the lodge attached. A meal, a shower & a comfortable bed was the attraction.

The restaurant was quiet when I went in for my meal except for one trucker & a couple who were in the far corner. I sat at the window seat & after finishing my meal, sat back to enjoy my coffee. As I looked up I noticed that the male of the couple was watching me but paid little attention to him. I was ready to leave when the lady of the couple came over to my table. “I’m sorry if my husband has been looking over at you” she said “he is a big fan of trucks which is why we come to this restaurant to eat sometimes so that he can watch the trucks come & go” I said that there was no need to apologise but she finished of by telling me that he was disabled so can’t drive but loves the trucks. “Are you setting off at all” she asked & I told her that I was staying in the hotel overnight. She went back to her table to tell her husband the news & he seemed very disappointed. As I got up to go he waved & on an impulse I went over to speak to them. “ I’m not moving out but if you’re leaving would you like to see the truck before you go” his face was a picture.

We headed out over to my truck & as he was in a wheelchair his wife moved him to the driver side & I opened for him to see in the cab. “ He can stand up but not for a long time” his wife said & helped him to his feet. I asked if he would like to sit inside if he could manage the step up, his face said it all & I helped him into the cab.

We stood outside by the door & she kissed me on the cheek thanking me for being so helpful & realising his dream. We stood looking at each other then she moved back down the side of the cab a little & smiled. “He is happy up there & safe & I also like to have a little happiness of my own too. He is aware that I have needs that he can’t satisfy but when I’m comfortable with someone he’s happy for me”

She said if this was a problem for me then no hard feelings but if I liked her & was comfortable would I like to take things further.

They lived a short distance away & their car was parked in the car park so after helping him down & him quietly telling me that he was happy to see her find someone we headed off to their house.
