I was reading an article in the newspaper the other day about people taking part in protests and it reminded me of an event that happened in my very first job.

My knees felt weak as I realised that, not only could I lose my job, but could end up with a criminal record making it almost impossible to get another.

Both middle-aged men looked me up and down. Mr Henderson’s voice softened a little, ‘Chief Inspector Willis and I have discussed this and we’re sure you’d like to avoid going to court and losing your job. So, I’m willing to offer you an alternative punishment which means you’ll get to keep your job and all charges will be dropped.

Although a part of me felt uneasy, I knew I had no option but to accept. I nodded in agreement.

‘Right,’ said Mr Henderson, ‘I want you to come back here after the office closes at 5.30. I can’t let your actions go unpunished young lady. Do you understand?’

‘Yes sir,’ I replied.

‘I’d like you to remove your knickers now and give them to me.’

I could hardly believe what I was hearing but he stood up and held out his hand. I obediently slipped my knickers down from under my short skirt, stepped out of them and handed the scrap of cotton fabric to my boss.
