"Would do but always kinda worried incase don't turn out properly"

I've done 3 weddings, with the right preparation, extra batteries and memory cards you can succeed.

No someone who is semi-pro should have the ability, skills and knowledge to do a wedding unless confidence was an issue due to never having done one... done a few for family etc what is the difference? it's still someone's big day...

No - realism. I don't wish to invest more £'s in backup gear, thanks. Plus, I dont think it would be as much fun as shooting with a Model......

Not sure I agree as most pros and semi-pros will have plenty of gear...

I only have 1 body, and a few lenses. For weddings, I would need 2 or 3 bodies, plus way more lenses. Plus Speedlites, probably. Just an amateur, doing studio or location stuff, for fun.... I do not want to do Weddings - my choice.

No worries but the OP said the key words Semi-Pro which is a world of a difference from an amateur... I totally respect your point

Thanks..!! Semi-Pro is very difficult to define...!! To me a Pro is someone whose sole job and living is photography. If someone is part time and has another job, then I consider them to be Semi-Pro - always assuming they get paid..!!!

That's pretty much it, a big difference from being an amateur though as a number of semi-pros I know make a good few grand every year from photography every year... helping pay for new gear etc

Can I just say, as a pro tog who shoots weddings it is more about the person rather than the gear (although having back ups makes sense).

But I have see the best pro's using amateur kit but because they know they are doing they can compensate, in fact after investing in all of my pro gear over the years I have just invested in semi amateur kit (Fuji XT1) because it's just as good and it weighs a lot less.

There is a lot of rubbish in these forums regarding status of people and I can assure you all there are a amateurs out there producing much better pics than the pro's. And there are pro's like me who don't charge because this side of it is for fun.

In fact the people you need to be worried a out are those who diss people because of their status...there the ones with personality disorders.

.

Overall I don't disagree with a lot of your comments but I still think and know from all my colleagues that doing shoots for free is frowned on... I would expect as a pro you should really agree with that as I am sure you have lost wedding bookings to others who quoted silly low amounts or even free... anyway we move on, no personality disorder here, just trying to protect my source of income

"Beginning to think I shouldn't have asked "

;) I have been having this argument for about 10 years

@sophistication. My first wedding I shot was for free and for a couple of years after that I was charging expenses only just to get a portfolio. Yes I took paid work from the pro's......or did I? These people couldn't afford to spend 1000s on pics so they would never gave paid, but they did get good pics.

Now I charge quite a lot and the people who book me can afford me and that also promises a certain level of expectation which I have to meet.

I know there are loads of people out there charging a pittance but they are not taking the customer who pay and expect a certain level of service.

Yes they are I see it daily almost... weddings is a different thing to an extent as I agree to start with you have to prove you can do such a pressure event and do it well... Having said that many pros are having to consider dropping their prices as good amateurs are charging less.

I see it though more when dealing with the nationals, for example the Daily Record take an image from a member of the public at an event as they got it for free when pros were there and never got the sale.

I see weekly at Professional sports grounds as more and more clubs ask keen photographers who support the clubs to give them some half decent images for free when pros are at these same games and lose money.

I see it daily on Social media sites where some event organisers advertise for a photographer to get access to the relevant event in exchange for free images and these same images the organisers sometimes then print on their publications helping to make loads of cash. A good example is the Edinburgh Fringe, they advertise every year for a photographer, the deal is the relevant person can go to any Fringe event for free but sign over the copyright of all images to the Fringe in return for a very small payment and expenses.

These images if done by a Pro would cost maybe £90 each and upwards yet the Fringe are probably paying the amateur a fee of about £100 for them all.

I am sorry daily almost Pros lose money to amateurs and hobbyists but I totally understand these people don't set out to cause pros to lose their jobs.

In the last 5 years I have seen a number of colleagues being made redundant by some of the countries biggest national papers.

Anyway whatever we say here it won't change anything
