A few years ago I attended a great workshop called Sex Toys 101. It was given by a friend of mine who owns a sex toy business especially geared towards women of all sexual orientations. The group of women gathered for this workshop were mostly lesbians as the workshop was held at a queer positive bookstore with a little mix of heterosexual and bisexual people as well.

She began with an ice breaker which made people feel a little more comfortable with the open discussion of sex and sexual toys among strangers. After that she gave us a little run down on the history of sex toys and vibrators. Can you believe that one of the first ones offered was hand cranked! You really had to work for your orgasms back then. Then, she called for volunteers to demonstrate some of the sensual oils. Some have a distinct warm feeling to them while others have a cold one. I have used some on a occasion but since my husband James is not into creams or oils it is not something we do often.

Her third demonstration asked for a volunteer who knew something about sex toys. My friend kept elbowing me encouraging me to go. It was very amusing. So after no one else volunteered I raised my hand and went to the front of the room. She had a table of sex toys there. I kept checking them out as she asked me some questions. I joked that I was a little nervous. If it was just me and the toys I would have been just fine, but with the audience I was a little shaky. She put a blindfold over my eyes and told me to put out my hands and she was going to have me identify different items. The first one was a couple of hazelnuts. I knew what they were because of their unevenness and when I shook them I could tell something was inside them. The second item was one of those vibrating dildos that has a pearl-like ring at the center that spins around and a clitoral stimulating attachment next to it. I recognized it right away. The third item was a cucumber. I figured it out because of its shape and I even knew it was one though it was wearing a condom. The final one gave me some trouble because it is no toy I could ever handle (not in my wildest dreams...maybe in my nightmares). It was a double ended dildo, but no ordinary one. It was huge and very long! It gave everyone a good laugh. The purpose of this demo was that many things can be a sex toy. Interesting.

The rest of the workshop was a show and tell about the various sex toys in her collection. She spoke about good ones for beginners and neat ones that are not made of latex for those people who are allergic to latex. One was made of lucite and was absolutely beautiful. It and many others are hand made. Others were made of silicone. The cool thing about silicone toys is that they can be boiled clean. That is not a good thing to do with latex toys because it will melt them or warp their shape. Not so for the silicone!

Afterwards, I selected a couple of items for purchase. One was a nice little jelly egg. It is a vibrator that you can place anywhere on your body. If you want to insert it inside you must put it in a condom so you can easily and safely pull it out. You don't want to damage the cord. The other one I bought is a sweet looking dildo shaped like a dolphin. It smiles up at you. It is not as tacky as it sounds. It is really quite cute.

Ah what fun! Too bad my university classes were not as fun as Sex Toys 101.
