Mark pulled up outside the neat semi on Maple Close just after ten. His van was a white Transit with “Mark’s Builds – No Job Too Small” stencilled on the side in peeling blue letters. He was thirty-seven, solid and slightly soft from years of heavy lifting and too many site breakfasts. Thick arms, a bit of a belly under the faded navy polo, jeans sitting comfortably on his hips. Not a gym body, but strong enough. He grabbed his clipboard and the stubby pencil he always used, then walked up the path and rang the bell.

Sophie answered almost straight away.

She was short, barely five-two, slim, with that soft curve of hip that made her little shorts look obscene. Blonde hair pulled back in a loose ponytail, a few strands already escaping. She wore a thin white vest top that clung to her small breasts and a pair of denim cut-offs that rode high enough to show the lower curve of what was, without question, a fantastic arse. Pale, smooth, and shaped like it had been designed to be stared at.

“Hi,” she said, smiling. “You must be Mark. Come in.”

He stepped into the hallway, catching the faint scent of her perfume and the warmer smell of coffee. She closed the door behind him and led the way through to the kitchen, hips swaying just a fraction more than necessary.

“So,” she said, turning and leaning back against the counter. “The whole place needs a bit of love. New kitchen, maybe open up that wall into the living room, and the bathroom’s a disaster. I work part-time at the dental surgery so I’m around most mornings if you need access.”

Mark nodded, already jotting notes, but his eyes kept drifting. The way the shorts hugged her arse when she turned. The soft line of her stomach under the vest. She noticed. Of course she noticed.

“You want a coffee while you look around?” she asked, already reaching for the kettle. “I’ve got nothing on this morning. Bored out of my mind, if I’m honest.”

“Yeah, go on. Milk, no sugar.”

She made the drinks, then guided him room by room. In the living room she stood close while he measured the wall she wanted knocking through. Her arm brushed his. Once. Then again, deliberate.

“You do this a lot?” she asked, looking up at him. “Come into women’s houses, tell them how much it’s going to cost to make everything better?”

Mark chuckled, low. “Something like that.”

In the bathroom she pointed out the cracked tiles and the shower that only worked if you held the handle just right. She bent over the bath to show him the leak under the taps, shorts stretching tight across that perfect round arse. He didn’t look away fast enough. When she straightened she caught him and just smiled, slow and knowing.

“Like what you see?” she asked softly.

He met her eyes. “Hard not to.”

They ended up back in the kitchen. Mark leaned against the island, clipboard forgotten for a moment. Sophie sat on the stool opposite, legs crossed, one foot swinging.

“My husband’s away a lot,” she said, almost casually. “Works oil rigs. Two months on, two weeks off. Right now he’s not here.” She took a sip of coffee, watching him over the rim. “And when I’m not working or at the gym I’m in this house with nothing to do except think about what a proper man might do if he had the chance.”

Mark felt the familiar heat settle low in his gut. He wasn’t the biggest bloke in that department, never had been, but he’d never had complaints. And the way she was looking at him, like she already knew exactly what she wanted, made his cock twitch in his jeans.

“Sounds lonely,” he said.

“It is.” She uncrossed her legs, the movement slow, deliberate. “So, how much do you think all this work is going to set me back, Mark?”

He named a figure. She didn’t even blink.

“And if I wanted you to start soon? Like really soon?”

He set the clipboard down. “I could fit you in.”

Sophie smiled, stood up, and walked around the island until she was standing close enough that he could feel the warmth of her. She looked up at him, blonde lashes, soft mouth, that mischievous spark in her eyes.

“Good,” she murmured. “Because I’ve been thinking about a big strong builder coming round and quoting me properly.” Her hand rested lightly on his forearm, fingers tracing the muscle. “Maybe you should come back tomorrow. Bring your tools. Stay a bit longer.”

Mark’s voice came out rougher than he intended. “Yeah. I think I will.”

She gave his arm a gentle squeeze, then stepped back, hips swaying as she went to open the front door for him.

“Don’t be late, Mark,” she said, voice low and teasing. “I’m already looking forward to it.”

He walked back to the van with the taste of her perfume still in his nose and the clear image of that arse burned into his mind. The quote was sorted.

The real work started tomorrow.

Mark drove home with the radio off and the windows cracked open. Cool air slid across his face but did nothing for the heat still sitting low in his gut. Sophie’s smile kept replaying, bright, knowing, the way her lower lip had caught between her teeth for half a second. The way those denim cut-offs had stretched tight across her arse when she bent over the bath, the soft pale skin above the waistband flashing as she moved. The warm brush of her fingers on his forearm, light but deliberate. That quiet little invitation in her voice.

He pulled onto their street twenty minutes later. Same family home as always, neat front garden, kids’ bikes dumped on the lawn, blinds twitching in the breeze. He killed the engine and sat there a second longer than usual, engine ticking as it cooled, before grabbing his bag. The van door creaked when he shut it.

Inside the house smelled of washing powder and the faint citrus of Amy’s cleaning spray. The telly was already on in the living room, cartoon theme music blaring. Amy was in the kitchen, blonde hair tied back in a messy knot, still in the clothes she wore for her school hours shift at the supermarket. Jake and Ellie were arguing over something so pointless

“Alright, love?” she said without looking up from the dishwasher. The machine hummed as it finished its cycle. “Get the quote done?”

“Yeah. Big job. Kitchen, knocking that wall through, bathroom. Could be a few weeks’ work.”

She nodded, already moving on, stacking plates with a soft clatter. “Good. We could do with the money. Don’t forget Jake’s football kit needs washing before Saturday.”

Mark kissed the top of her head out of habit. Her hair smelled of the same cheap shampoo she’d used for years. Twenty years together. They’d started young, eighteen and nineteen, a flat above a chippy that always smelled of grease and vinegar, then the house, then the kids. Amy was still pretty in that soft, practical way, but the spark had settled into something comfortable and predictable. Sex was once or twice a month if he was lucky, always the same, lights off, missionary, or her on top, with her eyes closed, the sheets cool and slightly scratchy against his knees. She liked it when he went down on her, would push his head between her thighs and come with soft little gasps, the taste of her familiar and mild, but she never returned the favour. A blowjob was something that happened in the early years and then just stopped. He’d tried suggesting toys, different positions, even just her on top more often. Amy would smile, kiss him, lips dry and quick, and say she liked things the way they were. Routine. Safe.

He showered under water that never quite got hot enough, changed into clean joggers that still smelled faintly of fabric softener, and told Amy he needed to sort some paperwork upstairs. The kids were glued to the telly, laughter and cartoon sound effects drifting up the stairs. He shut the bedroom door with a quiet click, sat on the edge of the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight, and finally let himself think about Sophie properly.

Short. Slim. That blonde ponytail bouncing when she walked. The way her arse had looked in those cut-offs, round, firm, the soft crease where cheek met thigh begging to be gripped. The warm scent of her perfume mixed with coffee when she’d stood close. The soft suggestion in her voice when she said she was bored. That she wanted a proper man to come round and quote her properly.

Mark pushed his joggers down. The cool air of the bedroom kissed his skin. His cock was already half-hard, average length, thick enough, the same one Amy had seen a thousand times and never seemed especially impressed by. He wrapped his fist around it and stroked slowly, the dry friction turning slick as he worked. Eyes closed, he pictured Sophie bent over that bath again, the pale curve of her lower back, the way her shorts would have ridden higher if he’d just reached out. Imagining her turning around, dropping to her knees on the cool kitchen floor, looking up at him with that teasing smile while she took him into her mouth, something Amy hadn’t done in years.

He came harder than he had in months, spilling over his fist with a quiet groan that caught in his throat, Sophie’s name right on the edge of his tongue. The sharp, familiar smell of his own cum filled the quiet room. Afterwards he sat there breathing hard, chest rising and falling, sticky hand resting on his thigh, the doubt creeping in straight after the pleasure like cold water.

He was married. Two kids. A mortgage. If he went back tomorrow and things went the way her eyes had promised, it could blow everything up. Amy would never forgive him. The kids would find out eventually. He should text Sophie, say the job was too big, recommend someone else.

He didn’t.

Instead he wiped his hand on a tissue that felt rough against his skin, pulled his joggers up, and went downstairs like nothing had happened. The cartoon theme was still playing.

Across town, Sophie sat at the kitchen island with her phone propped against a mug of tea that had gone lukewarm. The video call connected after three rings. Her husband Dave appeared on screen in his oil-rig overalls, the background a constant low roar of engines and distant voices, the fluorescent lights harsh on his face.

“Alright, babe?” he said. “Miss me already?”

“Always.” She gave him the practised smile she used for these calls. “Just letting you know I found a builder. Came round this morning, seems decent. Going to do the kitchen, open the wall, sort the bathroom. Starts tomorrow.”

“Good. Get a fair price?”

“Yeah. Mark something. Local bloke. Seems like he knows what he’s doing.”

Dave nodded, already glancing off-screen at someone calling his name. “Alright. Don’t let him overcharge you. Love you. Gotta go, shift change.”

“Love you too.”

The call ended with a soft beep. Sophie set the phone down and stared at the empty kitchen for a long moment. The fridge hummed. A clock ticked somewhere in the hall. Mark’s face floated back into her mind, the solid, slightly soft build, the faint smell of dust and aftershave that had clung to him, the way his eyes had lingered on her arse and made no effort to hide it. The low, rough edge in his voice when he’d said he could fit her in.

She stood up, bare feet quiet on the cool floor, walked through to the living room and dropped onto the sofa. The cushions sighed under her weight. One hand slid down the front of her shorts and into her knickers without any fuss. She was already soaked, slick and warm just from thinking about him, the fabric of her knickers damp against her fingers. Two fingers slipped between her lips, gathering the wetness, circling her clit in slow, deliberate strokes. The soft, wet sound of it was loud in the quiet room.

She pictured Mark coming back tomorrow. Tools. Clipboard. That quiet hunger in his eyes. Imagined him pushing her against the kitchen counter, the cold edge of the worktop digging into the backs of her thighs, big hands on her arse, lifting her onto the island while she wrapped her legs around him. Or better, her on her knees on the living-room carpet, the rough weave pressing into her skin, taking that hard cock into her mouth the way she barely did for Dave anymore, looking up at him while he lost control, the taste of him, the weight of him on her tongue.

Sophie came quickly, thighs trembling, a soft broken moan escaping as she soaked her fingers and the crotch of her knickers. The release rolled through her in warm waves, leaving her breath shaky and her skin flushed. She stayed like that for a minute, breathing hard, hand still cupped between her legs, the slick heat of herself coating her fingertips, already thinking about tomorrow.

Mark would be back in the morning.

Mark barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes he saw Sophie’s smile from the day before, the way those shorts had hugged her arse, the quiet invitation in her voice. He’d laid awake next to Amy until the sky started turning grey, then slipped out of bed early. By the time he was ready to leave the house the kids were still asleep and Amy was only just stirring for her morning routine. He kissed her cheek the same way he always did.

The van felt too quiet on the drive over.

When he pulled up outside the house, it was just after half eight. He grabbed his tool bag and clipboard, told himself for the tenth time that he was only here to work, and rang the bell.

Sophie opened the door in gym clothes.

Tight black leggings that clung to every curve of her legs and that fantastic arse. A simple grey vest top, slightly cropped, showing a thin strip of flat stomach. Blonde hair pulled up in a high ponytail. She looked like she’d either just been to the gym or was about to go.

“Morning, Mark,” she said, stepping back to let him in. “You’re early. I was just about to head out for a class, but Ill push it back. Coffee?”

“Yeah. Please.”

He followed her through to the kitchen, trying not to stare at the way the leggings moved with her. The house smelled faintly familiar of her perfume and fresh coffee again. She poured two mugs, set his down on the island, then leaned against the counter opposite him, one ankle crossed over the other.

“So,” she said, wrapping both hands around her own mug. “Where do you want to start today?”

“Kitchen first. Need to check the electrics and the water supply before I can order anything.”

She nodded. “Makes sense”

They talked while he worked. Ordinary things at first, how long she’d lived in the house, what sort of units she was thinking of, whether she wanted the wall completely open or just a big archway. Sophie asked easy questions and actually listened to the answers. After a while she made a second round of coffee and they ended up sitting on the stools at the island for a proper break.

“You been doing this long?” she asked, nodding at his tools.

“Since I left school, more or less. Dad was a builder. Sort of fell into it.” He took a sip of coffee. “Pays the bills. Got two kids, so it has to.”

“How old?”

“Jake’s twelve, Ellie’s nine.” He found himself smiling a bit. “They’re good kids. Loud, but good.”

Sophie tilted her head. “And your wife? She work?”

“Yeah. Supermarket. School hours so she’s home for the kids after.” He hesitated, then added, “We’ve been together twenty years. Feels longer some days.”

She gave a small, knowing smile. “I know that feeling. Dave and I have been married twelve. He’s on the rigs, two weeks on, two off. When he’s home it’s fine. But the weeks he’s away drag.

Mark nodded, looking down at his mug. The kitchen was quiet except for the low hum of the fridge. He could smell her shampoo from across the island, clean and faintly sweet.

They didn’t push it further that morning. Just work, kids, the usual married-life stuff. But the air between them felt charged all the same. Every time she moved he noticed. Every time he caught her looking, she didn’t look away straight away.

Around eleven she finally grabbed her gym bag.

“I’m going to that class,” she said. “Back in about an hour. Help yourself to more coffee if you want.”

Mark watched her leave, the tight leggings doing nothing to hide the shape of her arse as she walked down the path. He spent the next hour measuring and marking walls, trying to keep his mind on the job.

She came back just after twelve, flushed and glowing with sweat. The vest top was damp in places and stuck to her skin. A few strands of blonde hair had escaped the ponytail and clung to her neck. She dropped her bag by the door and walked into the kitchen where Mark was packing away his laser measure.

“God, that was a killer,” she said, still a bit out of breath. “Instructor was on one today.”

She reached past him for a glass of water. Their arms brushed. She was close enough that he could feel the heat coming off her body and catch the clean, salty scent of her sweat mixed with whatever lotion she used. For a second neither of them moved.

“Sorry,” she murmured, though she didn’t sound particularly sorry.

Mark stepped back half a pace. “No problem.”

Sophie drank the water in a few long swallows, throat working, then set the glass down. “I’m going to grab a shower. The handle on the bathroom door’s been sticking for weeks, keeps jamming when you try to open it from the inside. I normally don’t shut it, but will because you’re in the house, If I’m not out in ten minutes, come rescue me?”

She said it lightly, almost joking, but her eyes stayed on his a beat longer than necessary.

“Yeah. Course.”

She headed upstairs. Mark heard the bathroom door close, then the sound of the shower starting. He tried to focus on his notes. He managed about four minutes before he heard her voice, slightly muffled.

“Mark? It’s stuck.”

He went up the stairs two at a time. The bathroom door was closed. He tried the handle, it turned a little then stopped dead.

“You alright?” he called.

“Yeah. Just the handle’s completely jammed. I’ve got a towel on, but I can’t get out.”

Mark braced his shoulder, gave the door a firm shove while twisting the handle hard. Something gave with a dull click and the door swung open.

Sophie stood on the other side, wrapped in a white towel that covered her from chest to mid-thigh. Her skin was still damp, water beading on her shoulders and collarbones. The towel was tucked tightly but the shape of her was impossible to ignore, the curve of her hips, the soft press of her breasts against the fabric, the long line of her bare legs. Her blonde hair was wet and darker, hanging loose down her back. She smelled of soap and warm skin.

“Thanks,” she said, a little breathless. “I thought I was going to be stuck in there all afternoon.”

Mark kept his eyes on her face. Mostly. “No problem. Handle’s shot. I’ll replace it tomorrow.”

She nodded, one hand holding the top of the towel. Neither of them moved for a second. The hallway felt very small.

“I’ll let you get dressed,” he said finally.

“Yeah.” She gave him a small smile. “Thanks again, Mark.”

He went back downstairs, heart thumping harder than it had any right to. A few minutes later he heard her bedroom door close. When she came down she was in jeans and a soft jumper, hair still damp. They talked about the bathroom handle and the kitchen layout for the rest of the afternoon like nothing had happened.

But something had shifted.

When Mark packed up at half four, Sophie walked him to the door.

“Same time tomorrow?” she asked.

“Yeah. I’ll bring a new handle for that door.”

She smiled, leaning against the doorframe. “I’ll make sure the coffee’s ready.”

He drove home trying to clear his head. The image of her in that towel kept rising up, no matter how hard he pushed it away.

When he walked through his own front door the house smelled of pasta and garlic. Amy was in the kitchen, stirring a pot. The kids were at the table doing homework.

“Good day?” she asked, glancing over.

“Yeah. Productive.” He kissed her cheek. It felt automatic.

Amy turned back to the hob. “Tea’s nearly ready. Go wash up.”

Mark headed upstairs, the taste of Sophie’s name still sitting quietly at the back of his mind.

Mark arrived just after half eight the next morning, a new door handle and a small bag of tools in one hand. The air was cold, the sky a dark grey. He rang the bell and waited.

Sophie opened the door in another set of gym clothes, black leggings again, this time with a soft pink vest top that sat snug against her. Hair in a ponytail, face fresh.

“Morning,” she said, stepping aside. “Come in. Kettle’s just boiled.”

He wiped his boots on the mat and followed her through. The house smelled of toast. She poured two mugs of tea, set his down on the island, and leaned against the counter the same way she had the day before.

“I’m off to the gym again,” she said “Then I need to do a bit of shopping. Should be back after lunch. You alright here on your own?”

“Yeah, fine. I’ll sort that bathroom handle first, temporary fix so it doesn’t jam again. Then I’ll start stripping the kitchen out.”

She nodded, took a sip. “Perfect. Help yourself to more tea or coffee if you want. There’s biscuits in the cupboard.”

They stood there for a minute, drinking in comfortable quiet. Sophie asked how the kids were, whether Jake had football that weekend. Mark answered, kept it light. The charge from the day before still sat under the surface, but neither of them pushed it.

When she finished her tea she rinsed the mug, grabbed her gym bag and keys, and headed for the door.

“See you later then,” she said, pausing with one hand on the frame. “Don’t work too hard.”

“I’ll try not to.”

The door closed behind her. Mark listened to her car start and pull away before he picked up his tools and headed upstairs.

The bathroom was small and dated, the air still faintly damp from her shower the day before. He set the new handle on the side of the sink and got to work unscrewing the old one. It came away easily enough. He was lining up the new plate when something caught his eye.

On top of the open washing basket in the corner sat a pair of knickers.

Not ordinary ones. A bright red thong, the kind of scrap of lace and string that left almost nothing to the imagination. The fabric looked soft, a little crumpled, like it had been worn recently and tossed there without much thought.

Mark stopped what he was doing.

Amy never wore anything like that. Her underwear drawer was full of plain cotton, black or beige, practical and comfortable. Nothing red. Nothing that skimpy.

He stared at the thong for a long moment, screwdriver still in his hand. The bathroom was quiet except for the soft drip of the tap. He told himself to ignore it, finish the handle, get downstairs and start on the kitchen.

Instead he set the screwdriver down and stepped closer.

The red lace looked even brighter against the pale plastic of the basket. He could see the thin side strings, the small triangular front panel. Without really deciding to, he reached out and picked them up.

They were light in his fingers. Still soft. He turned them over, found the crotch panel, and before he could stop himself he brought them closer to his face.

The scent hit him straight away. Clean laundry powder underneath, but on top of that the unmistakable warm, intimate smell of her. Faint but clear. The kind of scent that went straight to his cock.

Mark’s pulse kicked harder. He stood there in the quiet bathroom, Sophie’s red thong in his hand, breathing her in like some dirty secret. The thought that she might have left them there on purpose slid through his mind and refused to leave. Maybe she had. Maybe she hadn’t. Either way, he was standing in her house with her knickers pressed to his nose while she was out at the gym.

He felt himself hardening in his work trousers.

A sudden rush of guilt followed, sharp and familiar. He was married. Amy was at work right now, stacking shelves or serving customers, thinking he was just doing a normal job. The kids were at school. And here he was, acting like a pervert over a pair of red lace knickers that didn’t belong to him.

He lowered his hand, stared at the thong for another second, then carefully placed it back on top of the washing basket exactly as he’d found it. His fingers still smelled of her when he picked up the screwdriver again.

The new handle went on without trouble. He tested it twice, made sure it turned smoothly from both sides, then packed the old one away and headed downstairs.

The kitchen felt different now. Emptier somehow, even though nothing had changed yet. Mark set his tools down, rolled up his sleeves, and started stripping the old units out. Cupboard doors first, then the drawers, stacking everything neatly in the dining room so the floor stayed clear. The work was physical, dusty, the sort of thing that usually kept his mind busy.

Today it didn’t.

Every few minutes the memory of that red thong pushed back in. The soft lace. The scent. The question of whether Sophie had left it there knowing he would see it. He kept catching himself glancing at the stairs, half expecting her to walk back in early, flushed from the gym again, and catch him still thinking about it.

By the time the main run of cupboards was off the walls, his shoulders ached and his head was full of her. He made himself another mug of tea, sat on one of the stools, and stared at the half-stripped kitchen while the clock ticked toward lunchtime.

Sophie would be back soon.

And Mark still hadn’t decided what he was going to do about any of it.

Sophie pushed through the gym doors and headed straight for the bikes. The place smelled of rubber mats, disinfectant and that faint mix of sweat and deodorant that never quite left the air. She set her bag down, clipped in, and started pedalling at a steady pace, eyes fixed on the screen in front of her.

Mark kept sliding into her thoughts.

The way he’d looked at her yesterday when she came back sweaty from the gym. The careful way he’d kept his eyes on her face in the hallway when she was only wearing that towel. The quiet honesty in his voice when he’d talked about his wife.

She’d seen the hunger there, even if he tried to keep it buried.

She turned the resistance up and pushed harder, legs burning. A thin sheen of sweat built across her chest and the back of her neck. The pink vest stuck to her skin. Every time she shifted on the seat she felt the soft press of her own body, and her mind drifted back to the red thong she’d left on top of the washing basket that morning. She’d told herself it was just laundry. Part of her knew it wasn’t.

Halfway through her workout a man dropped onto the bike next to hers. Tall, gym-built, arms thick under a tight black top. He flashed a confident smile.

“You come here often?” he asked, voice raised over the music.

Sophie kept pedalling. “Often enough.”

He leaned a little closer. “I’m Dan. You look like you know what you’re doing on these things. Fancy a coffee after?”

She glanced at him, polite but flat. “I’m married. And not interested. Thanks anyway.”

He held up a hand, still smiling. “Fair enough. No harm in asking.”

He moved on after a minute. Sophie barely watched him go. Her head was still full of Mark, the solid shape of him, the way his voice had dropped when he talked about the things his wife never did. She finished the session with her thighs aching and her pulse high, then headed for the changing rooms.

The women’s side was quiet. She found an empty cubicle, locked the door, and sat down to pee. When she stood and pulled her pink knickers back up she noticed the damp patch right in the centre of the crotch. Not sweat from the workout. Something warmer, slicker. She’d been wet without even realising, just from thinking about him for the last hour.

Sophie stared at the little dark spot for a second, then she headed off for the showers, she undressed and stepped into the shower, water dripping down her naked body, her hand running over her hardened nipples, she ran her hand down between her legs to feel her wetness, not here she couldn’t, she rinsed off quickly, and the stepped out and got changed into clean jeans and a tshirt. The damp knickers went into a side pocket of her bag. She left the gym with her hair still damp at the ends tied up in a bun and the low ache between her legs still quietly present.

Shopping took longer than it needed to. She wandered the supermarket aisles without a real list, picking up milk, bread, a couple of things for dinner she might not even cook. Every so often she caught herself wondering what Mark’s wife was doing right now. School hours, he’d said. Probably at work in the supermarket somewhere, stacking shelves or on a till. Sophie didn’t know her name, didn’t know her face. The thought sat oddly in her chest. She wasn’t trying to wreck anyone’s marriage. She just couldn’t stop thinking about the man currently stripping her kitchen out.

By the time she reached the end of the high street her stomach was empty and the idea arrived fully formed.

Greggs.

She joined the short queue, ordered two steak bakes and a couple of sausage rolls, then added a can of and a bottle of water. The paper bag was warm in her hand as she walked back to the car. Mark would have been working for hours by now. Dust, lifting, the heavy stuff. He was bound to be hungry.

Sophie slid into the driver’s seat, set the bag on the passenger side, and started the engine. The faint scent of hot pastry filled the car. She caught herself smiling as she pulled out of the car park.

He’d probably say he didn’t need feeding. She already knew she was going to make him eat something anyway.

The drive home took less than ten minutes. She parked behind his van, gathered the Greggs bag and her shopping, and walked up the path with her keys already in her hand. Through the front window she could see the shape of him moving in the half-stripped kitchen.

Sophie paused on the step for a second, felt that same low flutter in her stomach, then unlocked the door and stepped inside.

Mark was halfway through pulling the last base unit away from the wall he was working on when he heard the front door open. He straightened up, wiped his forearm across his forehead, and turned just as Sophie walked into the kitchen carrying a paper bag and a couple of shopping bags.

She looked fresh from the gym, hair still a little damp at the ends, jeans and an tshirt instead of the leggings. The paper bag in her hand was warm enough that he could smell it from across the room, pastry and something savoury.

“Thought you might be hungry,” she said, setting the shopping down by the fridge. “You’ve been at it all morning. I grabbed a couple of things from Greggs on the way back.”

Mark glanced at the half-demolished kitchen, then at the bag she held out. His stomach gave a low, traitorous growl. He’d only had tea since breakfast and the work had been heavier than it looked.

“You didn’t have to do that,” he said, but he was already reaching for it.

“I know. I wanted to.” She smiled, easy, and started unpacking. Two steak bakes, a couple of sausage rolls, a can of and a bottle of water. She set them on the island like it was the most normal thing in the world. “Sit down a minute. Dust won’t go anywhere.”

Mark wiped his hands on his trousers and pulled out a stool. The steak bake was still hot when he bit into it. Flaky pastry, rich meat, the kind of proper site food that hit the spot straight away. He hadn’t realised how hungry he was until the first mouthful.

“Christ, that’s good,” he muttered, almost to himself.

Sophie laughed softly and perched on the stool opposite, unwrapping a sausage roll for herself. “Figured you’d work up an appetite. You look like you’ve shifted half the room already.”

He took another bite, bigger this time, and washed it down with a swig of . The cold fizz cut through the dust in his throat. For a few minutes they just ate, the quiet broken only by the soft rustle of paper and the occasional clink of the can on the worktop. It felt strangely normal, sitting there in the half-stripped kitchen with her, sharing greasy Greggs like they’d done it a dozen times before.

“Thanks,” he said after a while, screwing up the empty wrapper. “Proper hit the spot. Amy usually packs me something but I was out the door too early today.”

Sophie tilted her head, still chewing. “She at work?”

“Yeah. School hours. Home for the kids after.” He wiped his fingers on a bit of kitchen roll. “She’d properly judge me for eating this. Always on at me about proper lunches.”

“Well,” Sophie said, eyes warm, “she’s not here. And you looked like you needed feeding.”

Mark felt a small, unexpected twist in his chest at that. He finished a sausage roll a little slower, savouring it, while Sophie told him about the gym and some bloke who’d tried it on with her. She waved it off like it was nothing.

“Told him I was married and not interested,” she said, brushing crumbs from her tshirt. “He took it fine. Most of them do.”

Mark nodded, not trusting himself to say much. The food sat warm in his stomach. The kitchen smelled of pastry and dust and her perfume again. He watched her gather the empty wrappers into the paper bag, neat and practical, and felt the same quiet pull he’d been fighting since yesterday.

“Right,” he said eventually, standing up and stretching the stiffness out of his shoulders. “Better get back to it before I seize up completely.”

Sophie smiled and hopped down from the stool. “I’ll stay out of your way. Shout if you need anything.”

She disappeared into the living room with her shopping. Mark turned back to the half-gutted kitchen, the taste of the steak bake still on his tongue, and tried to remember what he’d been doing before she walked in with lunch.

It took him longer than it should have.

Mark got back to work with the taste of pastry still in his mouth. The remaining base units came away with a bit of persuasion, leaving raw plaster and old screw holes along the walls. Dust hung in the air and stuck to the sweat on his forearms. He worked steady, measuring as he went, stacking the last of the cupboard doors in the dining room so the space stayed clear.

Sophie stayed in the living room for a while. He could hear her moving about, After half an hour she appeared in the doorway with two fresh mugs of tea.

“Thought you might need another,” she said, setting his down on the only clear bit of worktop left. “How’s it looking?”

“Getting there.” Mark wiped his hands on a rag and took the mug. The tea was strong and hot, just how he liked it. “Once the units are gone I can check the electrics properly. Might need an electrician in for a day if anything’s not up to regs.”

She nodded, leaning against the doorframe. The soft tshirt sat loose on her shoulders. She’d taken her hair down since the gym and it fell in loose waves around her face. “No rush. I’d rather it was done right.”

They stood there drinking tea in the half-empty kitchen. The afternoon light had shifted, warmer now, catching the dust motes that floated every time he moved. Sophie asked about the next steps, how long the whole job might take, whether he’d need her out of the house for any of it. Mark answered, kept it practical, but every so often their eyes met and held a second longer than necessary.

When the tea was finished she took both mugs to the sink and rinsed them. “I’m going to put a wash on,” she said. “Shout if you need anything.”

Mark watched her go upstairs. A few minutes later she returned and he heard the washing machine start up in the utility room off the kitchen. The low hum filled the quiet. He tried to focus on the last run of wall cupboards, but his mind kept drifting back to the red thong and the way she’d brought him lunch without being asked.

By three o’clock the kitchen was stripped bare. Just the old worktops left to shift and the sink still plumbed in for now. Mark stood in the middle of the empty space, stretching the ache out of his lower back, when Sophie came back down.

“Looks different already,” she said, stepping carefully over a pile of skirting he’d pulled off. “Bigger.”

“It will once the wall’s open.” He glanced at the archway he’d marked earlier. “You still set on that?”

“Yeah. I like the idea of being able to see through to the living room. Feels less closed in.”

She walked the length of the room, bare feet quiet on the dusty floorboards, then stopped near him. Close enough that he caught the clean scent of her shampoo again.

“You’ve worked hard today,” she said. “You should pack up soon. Kids will be home from school before long.”

Mark checked his watch. She was right. Amy would already be finishing her shift and heading to pick them up. He started gathering his tools, wiping them down one by one before packing them into the bag.

Sophie helped without being asked, passing him the spirit level. Their fingers brushed once. Neither of them pulled away straight away.

“Same time tomorrow?” he asked, zipping the bag shut.

“I’ll be here.” She walked him to the door again, the same as the day before. “Thanks for getting so much done. And for fixing the handle.”

“No problem.” He paused on the step. “Thanks for the lunch. Proper made a difference.”

She smiled, one hand on the door. “Anytime.”

Mark drove home with the windows down again. The van still smelled faintly of dust and the last of the steak bake. He kept seeing the empty kitchen, the way she’d stood in the middle of it in her jumper and jeans, hair loose, looking at him like she was waiting for something neither of them had named yet.

When he pulled up outside his own house the kids’ bikes were already on the lawn. Amy was in the kitchen, uniform swapped for a soft top and ass hugging leggings, stirring something on the hob. Jake and Ellie were at the table with Lego spread out.

“Good day?” Amy asked, glancing over her shoulder.

“Yeah. Kitchen’s stripped. Moving quicker than I thought.”

He kissed her cheek and went upstairs to shower the dust off. Under the water he closed his eyes and let the heat soak into his shoulders. The image of Sophie bringing him food, the quiet way she’d watched him eat, the soft brush of her fingers when she passed him the tools, all of it sat heavy in his chest.

He stayed under the spray longer than he needed to, trying to wash the day off.

It didn’t quite work.

Sophie closed the front door and stood in the quiet hallway for a moment after Mark’s van pulled away. The house felt different with the kitchen stripped bare. Bigger. Emptier. The smell of dust and old wood still hung in the air, mixed with the faint trace of his aftershave that seemed to linger even after he’d gone.

She walked through to the living room and dropped onto the sofa, tucking her bare feet under her. The sofa felt soft against her skin. Outside, a car passed. Somewhere a dog barked. Ordinary late-afternoon sounds.

Her mind kept replaying the day in small pieces.

The way Mark had looked when she walked in with the Greggs bag, surprised and properly grateful, like no one had thought to feed him in a while. The quiet sound he’d made after the first bite of the steak bake. How he’d sat there eating without rushing, shoulders still dusty from the work, answering her questions about the next steps in that calm, practical voice.

She’d watched him more than she’d meant to. The solid shape of him under the polo shirt. The way his forearms flexed when he lifted the last of the units. The careful way he wiped his tools before packing them away. Everything about him felt steady. Reliable. And underneath it, that quiet hunger she’d seen when he talked about his wife and the once-a-month routine that never went further.

Sophie shifted on the sofa, pulling the tshirt down over her hips. She was still a little damp between her legs from earlier, the same low ache that had followed her around since the gym. She hadn’t touched herself. Hadn’t needed to. Just being in the same room as him for most of the afternoon had been enough to keep that soft, steady heat alive.

She thought about the red thong she’d left on the washing basket. Part of her still wasn’t sure why she’d done it. It had felt like a small, private test. Something to see if he noticed, if he was the sort of man who would look. She didn’t know if he had. He’d fixed the handle and come downstairs the same as always, quiet and professional. But the idea that he might have seen it, might have thought about it, sent a slow shiver through her.

Sophie stood up and wandered back into the empty kitchen. The floorboards were dusty under her feet. She ran a hand along the bare wall where the units had been, feeling the cool plaster. Tomorrow he would be back. Measuring for the new ones, maybe starting on the wall. She would make tea again. Sit across from him. Listen to him talk about the job and the kids and the life that waited for him at home.

She wasn’t trying to take anything from him. She just wanted to feel wanted for a while. To have someone look at her the way Mark looked at her when he thought she wasn’t watching. Like she was something he couldn’t quite stop thinking about.

Sophie made herself a fresh cup of tea and carried it upstairs, to do some pottering about.

Later, after a quiet dinner for one and a long bath, she climbed into bed with a book she didn’t read. The sheets were cool against her skin. She lay on her side, staring at the dark shape of the wardrobe, and let herself wonder what Mark was doing right now. Home with his wife and kids. Eating whatever Amy had cooked. Watching television. Lying in bed beside someone who never reached for him the way Sophie already wanted to.

She pressed her thighs together under the duvet and closed her eyes.

Tomorrow, she told herself.

Tomorrow she would see him again.

The skip arrived mid-morning, a big green one dropped on the drive with a heavy thud that rattled the windows. Mark signed for it, then got stuck into clearing the last of the old kitchen. Doors, drawers, chunks of worktop, all of it went out in loads until the room was properly empty.

Sophie had left him to it for the first hour while she worked at the dining table. When she came through she found him standing in front of the sink, tools already laid out.

“Sink’s next,” he said. “I’ll need to disconnect it. You alright if I set you up a temporary space in the utility? There’s a sink in there already, just need to shift a few things.”

“Yeah, of course.” She looked around the bare room. “What do you need me to move?”

They worked together. Sophie unplugged the kettle and the air fryer while Mark cleared a stretch of counter in the utility room. She carried the toaster through, then the mugs and the coffee jar. The space was tight. Every time she turned she was close enough to catch the clean scent of soap on his skin and the faint dust that always clung to him after a few hours’ work.

He was under the sink when she bent down to reach the bottom cupboard for the last of the cleaning stuff. Mark stood up at the same moment, turned, and brushed straight past her. His thigh pressed against the curve of her arse for a second longer than it needed to. Sophie froze, still bent over, the warmth of him solid against her. Neither of them moved straight away.

“Sorry,” he muttered, voice low.

She straightened slowly, the packet of cloths in her hand. “It’s fine.”

Their eyes met. Something flickered there, quick and sharp, before he stepped back and cleared his throat.

“Utility’s ready when you are,” he said, turning back to the pipework.

Sophie carried the last few bits through and set them up as best she could. Kettle by the sink, air fryer on the short counter, mugs stacked neatly. It wasn’t perfect, but it would do. She made them both a tea while Mark finished disconnecting the old sink. The water went off for twenty minutes, then he had it out and carried it to the skip in one heavy lift.

The rest of the afternoon passed in the same quiet rhythm. Mark worked, Sophie stayed out of the way for the most part, appearing now and then with fresh tea or a quick question about the next stage. The near-miss in the cupboard sat between them the whole time, unspoken but present every time their paths crossed.

By half four the kitchen was completely stripped. Just bare walls, floorboards, and the ghost of where everything used to be. Mark packed his tools while Sophie rinsed the mugs in the utility sink.

She walked him to the door the same as the days before. The late light caught the dust still on his shoulders.

“Thanks for the temporary setup,” she said. “Made it a lot easier.”

“No problem.” He paused on the step, one hand on the doorframe. “Tomorrow I’ll start marking out for the new units. Should be able to get the first ones in by the end of the week if the delivery turns up on time.”

Sophie nodded. She was standing close, closer than she needed to. Mark shifted his bag on his shoulder and leaned in a fraction to say something else, some ordinary goodbye. At the same moment she tilted her face up.

Their mouths met by accident, soft and brief, more surprise than intention. A proper kiss for half a second, warm and unexpected, before both of them pulled back at the same time.

Sophie’s cheeks were pink. Mark looked like he’d been caught doing something he shouldn’t.

“Sorry,” he said quickly.

“Yeah. Me too.”

They stood there another moment, the air between them suddenly thick. Sophie’s hand was still on the door. Mark’s fingers tightened on the strap of his tool bag.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said, voice rougher than usual.

“Yeah.” She managed a small smile. “Tomorrow.”

He walked to the van without looking back. Sophie closed the door and leaned against it, heart thumping, the faint taste of him still on her lips.

Neither of them had meant for it to happen.

Both of them knew it had changed something.

Mark drove home with a head full of thoughts, The kiss kept replaying in his head, short and accidental, but real enough that he could still feel the soft press of her mouth against his. He gripped the steering wheel harder than he needed to and tried to focus on the road.

He pulled up outside and took a minute, everything seemed normal. He walked in the house, Amy in the kitchen making dinner, Jake was arguing with Ellie about whose turn it was on the tablet.

“You’re late,” Amy said, not unkindly. “Everything alright?”

“Yeah. Just ran on a bit. Kitchen’s completely stripped now.”

He kissed her cheek the same as always and went straight upstairs to shower. Under the water he braced both hands against the tiles and let the heat run over his shoulders. The memory of Sophie’s mouth kept rising up, uninvited. The way she’d looked at him afterwards, cheeks pink, eyes wide. He’d pulled away first, but not before something in him had leaned in.

He stayed under the spray until the water started to cool, then dried off and went downstairs like nothing had shifted.

Dinner was ordinary. Homework, television, the usual noise. Mark washed up while Amy sorted the kids’ bags for school. Later, in bed, she turned her back to him and was asleep within minutes. He lay awake staring at the ceiling, the quiet house around him, and the knowledge that he would see Sophie again in the morning.

Sophie closed the door after Mark left and stood in the hallway for a long time, fingers touching her lips without meaning to. The kiss had been nothing, a clumsy accident, but the heat of it still sat low in her stomach. She made a simple dinner, ate it standing up in the utility room, and went to bed early with a book she never opened.

Every time she closed her eyes she felt it again. The brief warmth of his mouth. The way his breath had caught. The look on his face when they stepped apart.

She turned onto her side, pulled the duvet higher, and tried to think about anything else. It didn’t work.

The next morning Mark arrived at half eight on the dot. Sophie opened the door in jeans and a soft grey top, hair down, no gym clothes today. Neither of them mentioned the day before.

“Morning,” she said, stepping back.

“Morning.”

He carried his tools through to the empty kitchen and set them down. Sophie had already boiled the kettle in the utility. She brought two mugs through and handed him one without a word. Their fingers brushed. Both of them noticed. Neither of them commented.

Mark got to work marking out the new unit positions. Sophie stayed in the living room for the first hour, answering emails on her laptop. When she came through later with a fresh tea he was on his knees measuring the floor.

“Delivery’s confirmed for Monday,” he said, not looking up. “Should be able to start fitting the base units then.”

“Good.” She set the mug down near him. “You need anything?”

“I’m alright.”

She lingered a moment longer than necessary, then went back to the other room. The morning passed in that same careful quiet. They spoke when they needed to. They stayed out of each other’s way when they didn’t. But the kiss sat between them the whole time, unspoken and heavy.

Around midday Sophie made them both a sandwich in the utility and brought them through. They ate standing up, leaning against opposite walls of the empty kitchen. The silence stretched.

“About yesterday,” Mark said eventually, eyes on his plate.

Sophie looked at him. “You don’t have to say anything.”

“I know. I just…” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I didn’t mean for that to happen.”

“Neither did I.”

They stood there a moment longer. Outside a car door slammed. Somewhere a lawnmower started up.

“Doesn’t mean I regret it,” Sophie said quietly.

Mark met her eyes. Something tight in his expression loosened a fraction.

“Yeah,” he said. “Me neither.”

He finished his sandwich, rinsed the plate in the utility sink, and went back to work. Sophie watched him for a few seconds, the solid line of his back, the careful way he measured and marked, then returned to her laptop.

The afternoon carried on the same way. Steady work. Soft conversation. The air between them charged but controlled. When Mark packed up at half four Sophie walked him to the door again.

This time neither of them leaned in.

“See you tomorrow,” he said.

“Yeah. Tomorrow.”

She closed the door after him and let out a long breath she hadn’t realised she’d been holding. The house was quiet. The empty kitchen still smelled faintly of dust and the tea they’d shared.

Sophie leaned against the wall and closed her eyes.

They hadn’t kissed again.

But the wanting had only got stronger.

Mark arrived just after eight with a sledgehammer, dust sheets and a proper mask. Sophie opened the door in a smart blouse and trousers, hair neat, already dressed for her shift at the dental surgery.

“Morning,” she said, stepping aside. “I’ve got to leave in twenty minutes. You alright starting the wall without me here?”

“Yeah. I’ll get the sheets down and make a start. Should have most of it down by the time you’re back.”

She made them both a quick tea in the utility while he laid the dust sheets across the floor and taped up the living room doorway. They drank it standing in the empty kitchen, talking about nothing important. The kiss from two days ago still sat quietly between them, acknowledged but not pushed.

When Sophie grabbed her bag she paused at the door.

“I’ll be back just after two,” she said. “Try not to bring the whole house down.”

Mark gave a short smile. “I’ll do my best.”

He waited until her car pulled away before he put the mask on and picked up the sledgehammer.

The first blow landed with a solid, satisfying crunch. Plaster cracked. Dust bloomed. He worked steady and methodical, opening a small section first, then widening it, checking the lintel as he went. The wall came down cleaner than he’d expected. No nasty surprises in the structure, just old brick and plaster that gave way under the weight of the hammer. By 11 the opening was clear and rough, a wide archway that already made the two rooms feel like one. He cleared all the rubble away and into the skip.

Mark was covered in dust. It sat in his hair, across his shoulders, in the creases of his polo shirt. His arms were grey with it. He pulled the mask down and stepped back to look at the space just as he heard Sophie’s key in the front door.

She walked through, stopped in the living room doorway, and stared.

“Oh my God,” she said softly.

The wall was gone. Light poured through from the kitchen side. The whole ground floor felt open and bigger than it had any right to.

Mark wiped his forehead with the back of his wrist, leaving a clean streak through the dust. “Came down cleaner than I thought. Structure’s sound. Just need to tidy the edges and get it plastered properly next week.”

Sophie stepped closer, eyes wide, taking it all in. “It’s perfect. I didn’t think it would look this good so quickly.”

She turned to him, still smiling, and reached out without thinking. Her hand brushed dust from the front of his shirt, then settled on his upper arm. The touch was light at first, then firmer as she gave a small squeeze.

“Thank you,” she said. “Really. It’s exactly what I wanted.”

Her hand stayed there. Mark felt the warmth of her fingers through the dusty fabric. The air between them tightened. Sophie didn’t pull away. Her other hand came up and rested against his chest for a second, palm flat, feeling the solid shape of him under the shirt.

Neither of them spoke.

Mark looked down at her. Blonde hair neat from work, soft mouth, eyes that had stopped looking at the wall and were now looking only at him. The same quiet pull that had been building for days rose up sharp and sudden.

He kissed her.

This time it wasn’t an accident. He leaned in, one dusty hand coming up to her waist, and pressed his mouth to hers. Sophie made a small sound and kissed him back, soft at first, then deeper. Her fingers curled into the front of his shirt, dust and all. The taste of her was warm and clean. Mark’s other hand found the curve of her hip and held on, before slowly moving down and taking a grab of her gorgeous ass.

They stayed like that for a long moment in the middle of the newly opened space, dust floating in the light around them, the house quiet except for the sound of their breathing.

When they finally pulled apart Sophie’s cheeks were flushed. Mark’s heart was thudding hard enough that he was sure she could feel it under her hand.

“I’ve been thinking about that since the other day,” he said, voice low.

Sophie nodded, still close, her hand still resting against his chest. “Me too.”

Neither of them moved away. The open wall stood behind them, raw and new, and the wanting that had been careful for days finally had somewhere to go.

They stayed close for another few seconds, neither quite ready to step back. Sophie’s hand was still on Mark’s dusty shirt. His fingers rested lightly at her waist. The open wall behind them let the afternoon light spill across the floorboards and the fine grey film that covered everything.

Sophie was the first to speak.

“You’re covered,” she said, almost smiling, brushing another streak of dust from his shoulder. Her fingers lingered a moment longer than they needed to.

“Occupational hazard.” Mark’s voice was still rough. He glanced at the new opening. “I should finish tidying this up before I go. Don’t want you living in a dust cloud all weekend.”

“I don’t mind.”

But he stepped away anyway, carefully, and reached for the brush and dustpan he’d left by the wall. Sophie watched him for a minute, then went through to the utility and came back with a damp cloth and a bowl of water. She set the water on the nearest clear surface and started wiping the worst of the dust from the living room side of the opening while he swept.

They worked in quiet for a while. Every so often their eyes met across the space. The kiss sat between them, warm and unfinished.

When the floor was mostly clear Mark packed the brush away and washed his hands in the utility sink. The water ran grey. He dried them on an old towel and came back to find Sophie standing in the middle of the new archway, looking from one room to the other.

“It already feels different,” she said. “Bigger. Lighter.”

“It’ll look even better once it’s plastered and painted.”

She nodded, then turned to face him properly. The careful distance they’d kept for days had thinned to almost nothing.

“I don’t want to make things complicated for you,” she said quietly. “I know you’ve got Amy and the kids.”

Mark rubbed the back of his neck, leaving a clean patch in the dust that still clung there. “I know. I keep telling myself the same thing. Doesn’t seem to be stopping me thinking about you.”

Sophie took a small step closer. “I’ve been thinking about you too. More than I should.”

The space between them disappeared again. This time when Mark kissed her it was slower, less sudden. Sophie rose onto her toes and kissed him back, one hand sliding up to the side of his neck. She could feel the warmth of his skin under the dust, the steady beat of his pulse. His hands settled on her hips, firm but careful, like he was still giving her the chance to pull away.

She didn’t.

When they broke apart both of them were breathing a little harder. Mark rested his forehead against hers for a second.

“It’s Friday,” he said. “I should go. Kids’ll be home soon. Amy too. Whole weekend ahead.”

Sophie nodded, though her hands stayed loosely on his arms. “Yeah. You should.”

Neither of them moved straight away. Then Mark straightened, picked up his tool bag, and walked with her to the door. On the step he paused.

“I’ll be back Monday morning,” he said.

“I’ll be here.”

He looked at her for a moment longer, then leaned in and kissed her again, deeper this time. Sophie kissed him back without hesitation. As they parted Mark’s hand slid down from her waist and gave her arse a firm, cheeky squeeze through her trousers. Sophie made a soft sound against his mouth and pushed back into his palm for a second before he let go.

They both smiled, a little breathless.

“Looking forward to Monday already,” Mark said, voice low.

Sophie bit her lip, eyes warm. “Me too. Don’t work too hard over the weekend.”

“I won’t.”

He turned toward the van. Sophie watched him go, the feel of his hand still clear on her, then closed the door and leaned against it. The house was quiet. The open wall let the late Friday light pour through both rooms.

Two days felt like a long time all of a sudden.

She was already counting the hours until Monday morning.

Friday night was the same as most others.

Mark got home, kissed Amy on the cheek and checked in with the kids before going upstairs to shower the last of the dust off, and sat down to the curry Amy had made. The kids talked over each other about school and football. Amy asked how the job was going. He told her the wall was down and the space looked good. She nodded, already half listening to Ellie explain something about a spelling test.

After dinner they cleared up together. The kids claimed the sofa for a film. Mark and Amy sat at opposite ends, not quite touching. By half nine Jake and Ellie were in bed. Amy made a cup of tea and put the news on. Mark watched without really seeing it. His mind kept drifting back to the open wall, the dust on Sophie’s hand when she’d brushed it from his shirt, the firm squeeze he’d given her arse on the doorstep.

They went up at ten. Amy turned her back to him the way she usually did. Mark stared at the ceiling for a long time before sleep finally came.

Saturday morning he was up early. Jake had football at nine. Mark made toast for both of them while Amy stayed in bed a bit longer. The drive to the pitch was quiet, just the radio and Jake talking about positions. Mark stood on the touchline with the other dads, hands in his pockets, watching his son run about in the cold. They lost two-one. Jake was gutted. Mark ruffled his hair and told him he’d played well anyway.

The afternoon was pure family. Ellie wanted to go to the park. Amy suggested a pub lunch on the way back. They sat outside under a heater while the kids fed chips to the sparrows. Mark watched Amy laugh at something Ellie said and felt the familiar mix of fondness and distance. She was a good mum. A good wife in all the practical ways. He still couldn’t stop thinking about the way Sophie had kissed him back the day before.

Saturday night they got the kids to bed at a decent hour. Amy came out of the bathroom in one of her old shirts and underwear and climbed in beside him. Mark turned toward her. She kissed him, soft and familiar. After a minute her hand slid down under the waistband of his shorts and wrapped around his cock. She stroked him slowly, the same way she always had. Mark closed his eyes and let himself harden in her fist.

He kissed down her neck, took her panties off and settled between her thighs. Amy sighed when he licked her, the quiet sound she always made. She was already a little wet. He took his time, the way she liked, until her fingers tightened in his hair and her hips lifted. When she came it was soft and contained, thighs trembling against his ears.

Mark moved up her body. Amy pushed him onto his back and straddled him, guiding him inside with one hand. She rode him at a steady pace, hands on his chest, eyes half closed. Mark held her hips and looked up at her. In his head it was Sophie’s shorter frame, Sophie’s blonde hair falling forward, Sophie’s arse filling his hands the way it had on the doorstep. The guilt sat right next to the pleasure. He came hard inside Amy with Sophie’s name locked behind his teeth.

Afterwards Amy kissed his cheek, rolled off, and was asleep within minutes. Mark lay awake listening to her breathing, the taste of her still in his mouth, the memory of Sophie stronger than ever.

Sunday morning he woke first. Amy was on her side facing away from him. Mark shifted closer, pressed his morning hardness into the soft curve of her arse, and rested a hand on her hip. She made a sleepy sound and pushed back against him. He slipped his fingers down her body annd towards her pussy and found her, already warm and slick. He stroked slowly along her lips, not quite circling her clit yet. Amy’s breathing changed. She rubbed back against his cock, still half asleep.

The bedroom door banged open.

“Mum, I can’t find my slippers,” Jake announced, already halfway in. Ellie was right behind him asking about breakfast.

Amy jerked away. Mark yanked his hand free and rolled onto his back, pulling the duvet higher. The kids didn’t notice anything. Amy sat up, hair messy, and told them both to wait downstairs. The moment was gone.

The rest of Sunday was exactly as ordinary as it always was. Food shopping at the big Tesco, arguing over cereal brands, packing the boot. Back home they unloaded together, put a wash on, wiped down the kitchen. Amy teased him once about the amount of dust he’d brought home on his clothes all week. Mark flicked a tea towel at her hip and she laughed. Later she brushed past him in the hallway and let her hand rest on his stomach for a second longer than needed. Small things. Familiar things.

Mark answered them the same way he always had.

Inside, the countdown to Monday morning kept ticking.

Friday night Sophie made herself a quick bowl of pasta and ate it standing in the utility room. The empty kitchen still felt strange. She changed into some nice jeans and a nice top, put on a bit of makeup, and walked down to the local pub to meet her friend Steph.

They found a corner table and ordered a bottle of white. Steph asked about the house renovations and whether the builder was any good. Sophie kept her answers light, said he was solid, reliable, getting plenty done. She didn’t mention the kisses or the way her stomach flipped every time he looked at her. They talked about work, Steph’s new boyfriend, the usual catch-up stuff. By the second glass Sophie felt warm and a little loose. They finished the bottle and hugged goodbye on the pavement just after ten.

The walk home cleared her head a bit, but the tipsy glow stayed. She locked the door, kicked off her shoes, and went straight upstairs. In the bedroom she opened the bottom drawer and took out the plain silicone dildo she kept for nights like this, wasn’t nothing too big, just the average size she craved right now. She stripped down to nothing, lay back on the bed, and closed her eyes.

Mark filled her head straight away. The solid weight of him. The hands on her hips. The firm squeeze he’d given her arse on the doorstep. She licked the toy, reached down, and pushed it inside slowly, imagining it was him. Her free hand rubbed steady circles on her clit while she worked the dildo in and out. She came hard with his name in her mouth, thighs shaking, then drifted off still holding the toy against her stomach.

Saturday morning she woke tangled in the sheets, the dildo on the floor where it had slipped. She made coffee in the utility, carried it through to the open living room, and video-called Dave. He appeared on screen in his overalls, background noise of the rig behind him. Sophie flipped the camera and showed him the new archway, the bare kitchen, the progress so far. He nodded, said it looked good, asked if the builder was on schedule. They talked for ten minutes about nothing much. She told him she missed him. He said the same. The call ended with the usual quick “love you”.

Sophie finished her coffee, changed into gym kit, and headed out. The class was tough. She pushed harder than usual, trying to burn off the restless energy that had sat under her skin all week. Afterwards she showered at the gym and went shopping. She picked up milk, bread, the usual bits, then she wandered down the high street and soon found herself in the sexy lingerie shop. Two new sets went into the basket without much debate. One black, one deep red. One soft lace and the other just cotton but very see through and sexy. She told herself they were just for her. The quiet voice in her head knew better.

Saturday night she ordered a takeaway and ate it on the sofa with a film playing. She barely followed the plot. Her mind kept drifting to Monday, to the way Mark had looked at her before he left, to the solid feel of his hand on her arse.

Sunday morning she woke from a dream so clear it left her aching. Mark had been behind her, one hand on her hip, the other between her legs, mouth against her neck. She was already soaked when she opened her eyes. Sophie pushed the duvet down, slid her hand straight into her knickers, and stroked herself in slow, wet circles. She came quickly, biting her lip to keep quiet even though the house was empty, then lay there catching her breath with her fingers still slick.

The rest of Sunday she spent cleaning. Fine dust kept settling on every surface from the open wall. She wiped the skirting, the windowsills, the floorboards, the few bits of furniture she’d left uncovered. By late afternoon the place looked better, though she knew more dust would fall overnight. She made a simple dinner, showered, and went to bed early with the new red set still in its bag on the chair.

Monday morning felt close enough to touch. Who knows what it will bring

Mark rang the bell at half eight on Monday morning. Sophie opened the door in her work clothes, hair still a little damp from the shower. The second the door closed behind him she stepped in close. Mark met her halfway. The kiss was hungry from the start, all the weekend wanting poured into it. He pressed her back against the wall in the hallway, one hand on her hip, the other braced by her head. Sophie made a quiet sound into his mouth and curled her fingers into the front of his polo.

They only broke apart when the low rumble of a lorry sounded outside.

“Kitchen delivery,” Mark said, a little breathless.

Sophie nodded, squeezed Marks bulge, her cheeks flushed, and she stepped away to open the door again. The next hour was all boxes, flat-packs and checking off the delivery note. Mark directed the two blokes from the company while Sophie stayed out of the way with a mug of tea. By the time the lorry pulled off, the hallway and living room were stacked with cardboard and timber.

“I’ve got to go,” Sophie said, checking the time. “Shift starts at ten. I’ll be back around two.”

Mark was already cutting open the first box. “I’ll get as much of the base units together as I can. See you later.”

She paused at the door, looked back at him, then left.

The morning passed in a blur of instructions, screws and the low thud of the rubber mallet. Mark had most of the base carcasses built and roughly positioned by the time he heard Sophie’s car pull up and the door shut.

She walked through, dropped her bag, and found him in the middle of the open space wiping his hands on a rag. Dust and cardboard scraps covered the floor. He looked up and the same charge from the morning snapped straight back into place.

Sophie didn’t say anything. She walked over, took the rag out of his hand, and kissed him. Mark’s hands settled on her waist, then slid lower, pulling her in tight. The kiss deepened fast. She could feel him hardening against her stomach. When they broke for air she looked up at him, eyes dark, and slowly dropped to her knees on the dusty floorboards. Looked up at Mark and just said “I need this”

Mark’s breath caught.

Sophie popped the button on his work trousers, drew the zip down, and eased him out. He was already thick and heavy in her hand. She stroked him once, slow, then leaned in and took the head into her mouth. Warm. Wet. She worked him deeper with no rush, lips stretched, tongue moving, the soft wet sounds loud in the quiet house. Mark braced one hand on the nearest unit carcass and the other in her hair, not pushing, just holding on. Sophie took her time, letting him feel every slow slide, every swirl of her tongue, the occasional soft gag when she pushed herself a little further. Spit gathered at the corners of her mouth and ran down his shaft. She looked up at him while she did it, eyes watering just a little, and the sight nearly finished him.

“Sophie—” he warned, voice tight.

She only hummed and kept going, slower, deeper, until he came with a low groan, pulsing hard across her tongue. Sophie swallowed what she could, milked the rest with her hand, then sat back on her heels, lips shiny, breathing fast.

Mark was still trying to find words when the sharp knock came at the front door.

Both of them froze. Sophie wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and stood quickly. Mark stuffed himself back into his trousers, heart hammering. Another knock, louder.

“Delivery for the kitchen,” a voice called.

Mark cleared his throat. “One minute.”

He opened the door to a different bloke with a clipboard and two more boxes of hinges and handles. The interruption lasted ten awkward minutes of signatures and stacking. When the door finally closed again Sophie was in the utility rinsing her mouth and washing her hands.

Mark found her there. She turned, still flushed. He stepped in, cupped the side of her face, and kissed her slow and deep, tasting himself on her lips. Sophie leaned into it.

When they parted he rested his forehead against hers.

“I’ll repay that favour tomorrow,” he said.

Sophie smiled, small and wicked. “I’ll hold you to it.”

He packed his tools with hands that still weren’t quite steady, kissed her once more at the door, and headed for the van. The taste of her mouth followed him all the way home.

Mark arrived just after half eight on Tuesday. Sophie opened the door in a soft dress that sat mid-thigh, bare legs, hair down. The second the door shut he had her against the wall again, kissing her like he’d been thinking about nothing else since the day before. Sophie melted into it, hands already under his polo, palms flat on the warm skin of his back.

They only stopped when the need for air won out.

“I’ve been looking forward to this all night,” she murmured against his mouth.

Mark’s reply was a low sound and another kiss, deeper. Then he took her hand and led her through to the open kitchen space. The base units were still in rough positions, a solid old worktop balanced across two of them as a temporary surface for cutting and measuring. He cleared the spirit level and a box of screws with one sweep of his arm, then lifted Sophie easily onto the edge of it. The look of lust in their eyes.

She gave a small surprised laugh that turned into a soft gasp when he stepped between her knees and pushed the dress up her thighs. Underneath she was wearing the new deep red lace thong from the weekend. Mark ran his hands up the outside of her legs, thumbs brushing the soft skin high on her inner thighs, and looked up at her.

“Been thinking about tasting you since the first day I walked in here,” he said.

Sophie leaned back on her hands, eyes dark. “Then stop thinking.”

He hooked his fingers into the sides of the thong and drew it down her legs, slow, letting it drop to the dusty floorboards. She was already glistening. Mark spread her knees wider, leaned in, and dragged his tongue through her in one long, deliberate stroke. Sophie’s head tipped back, a shaky breath leaving her. He did it again, slower, savouring the warm, clean taste of her, then settled in properly.

There was no rush. He licked her open with long, thorough passes, then focused on her clit, circling, flicking, sucking softly while two fingers slid inside and curled. Sophie’s thighs trembled against his shoulders. Her hand found the back of his head and held on. The wet sounds of his mouth filled the quiet house. Every time she made a noise he answered with more pressure, more attention, reading her body like it was the only job that mattered.

“Mark” she breathed, hips lifting.

He didn’t stop. He kept the same steady rhythm, tongue and fingers working together, until Sophie’s whole body tightened and she came with a broken cry, thighs clamping around his head, pulsing against his mouth. He stayed with her through it, gentling his strokes but not pulling away until the last tremor had passed.

Only then did he lift his head, lips shiny, and look up at her. Sophie was flushed, chest rising and falling, dress still bunched around her waist. She reached down, cupped his face, and pulled him up into a slow, deep kiss, tasting herself on his tongue.

Mark rested his forehead against hers, both of them breathing hard.

“Favour repaid,” he said, voice rough.

Sophie gave a soft, shaky laugh and wrapped her legs loosely around him. “That felt like more than a favour.”

He kissed her again, slower this time, hands still warm on her bare thighs. The house stayed quiet. For a long moment neither of them moved, the open wall letting the morning light pour across the floor and the red thong still lying where it had fallen.

Eventually Sophie slid down from the worktop on unsteady legs. Mark picked up the thong and handed it to her without a word. She stepped back into it, smoothed her dress down, and met his eyes.

“You’ve still got a kitchen to build,” she said, though her smile said she wasn’t in any hurry.

Mark wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and reached for the spirit level again. “Yeah. I have.”

Neither of them looked particularly ready to get straight back to work.

Mark had gone down on her like a man who had been starving for it. No hesitation, no polite little licks before getting to the point. He had simply spread her open and taken his time, like the only thing that mattered in the world was the way she tasted and the sounds she made. Every slow drag of his tongue, every soft suck on her clit, the steady curl of his fingers inside her, it had all built so carefully that when she came it felt like something breaking open.

Mark was already reaching for the spirit level again, but the look he gave her over his shoulder said he was just as affected as she was.

Sophie walked through to the utility on legs that still didn’t feel entirely reliable. She ran the cold tap and splashed a little water on her face, then stood there with both hands braced on the edge of the sink, breathing slowly. Her reflection in the slightly mirrored splash back looked flushed, eyes brighter than usual, mouth soft. She could still feel the ghost of his hands on her thighs, the scrape of his stubble, the solid press of his shoulders between her knees.

It had been months since anyone had touched her like that. Dave’s rare efforts were always hurried, more obligation than hunger. Mark had eaten her like he wanted to remember the taste.

She made two mugs of tea with hands that were almost steady again and carried them back through. Mark had the next unit carcass upright and was checking it with the level. Dust motes floated in the light coming through the open wall. The whole space still smelled faintly of sex and plaster.

“Tea,” she said, setting his down on a clear bit of the temporary worktop.

He looked up, took the mug, and their fingers brushed. The same small charge jumped between them.

“You alright?” he asked, voice still a little rough.

Sophie leaned against the opposite unit, cradling her own mug. “Better than alright.”

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. He took a sip, eyes still on her. “Good.”

They drank in comfortable quiet for a minute. Sophie watched the way the morning light caught the dust still in his hair, the solid line of his shoulders under the polo. The ache between her legs had settled into a warm, pleasant throb. She could already feel herself wanting more. Not rushed. Just more of him. More of the way he looked at her like she was something worth taking his time over.

“I should let you get on,” she said eventually, though she didn’t move straight away.

Mark set his mug down. “You don’t have to go anywhere.”

“I know.” She pushed off the unit and stepped closer, close enough to catch the clean scent of his skin under the dust. “But if I stay right here I’m going to end up on that worktop again, and you’ve still got a kitchen to build.”

He gave a low huff of laughter and reached out, fingers brushing the side of her hip through the dress. “Fair point.”

Sophie rose onto her toes and kissed him once, soft and lingering, then stepped back before it could turn into something neither of them would stop.

“I’ll be in the living room if you need me,” she said.

She left him to the units and the spirit level, the taste of tea and the memory of his mouth still clear. Every so often she glanced through the open wall and caught him looking back. Neither of them pretended it was only about the kitchen any more.

The day had only just started, and Sophie already knew she would be thinking about the way he’d gone down on her for the rest of it.
