Elliot hadn’t meant to stare—but when he saw Maya walking out of the gym in her athletic gear, ponytail bouncing, cheeks flushed from her workout, his brain stalled slightly.
They’d only ever spoken in rushed school-gate conversations, usually about lost water bottles or forgotten permission slips. But today, she looked… different. Confident. Alive. Radiant.
“Big workout?” he asked as she approached, breath still quick.
She laughed. “Is it that obvious?”
“Only because you make it look way better than anyone should after cardio.”
The moment the words left his mouth, he felt heat rise in his face. But instead of frowning, Maya paused—tilting her head with a smile that was half surprised, half delighted.
“Well then,” she said softly, “I guess the workout was worth it.”
There was a beat of silence, not awkward but charged—like the air waiting for lightning.
“I was going to grab a coffee,” Elliot said, trying to sound casual. “You want some company on the cooldown?”
Maya brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Actually… yeah. I’d like that.”
They walked to a nearby café, conversation flowing faster than either expected. The banter was easy. The teasing, natural. Every time she laughed, he felt pulled closer. Every time his hand brushed hers, she didn’t pull away.
Less than an hour later, they found themselves alone together in the quiet corner of the café garden, sunlight slipping behind the clouds. The connection between them felt warm, intense—almost electric.
Maya stepped closer, eyes searching his.
“About that compliment earlier,” she murmured, “it was… bolder than usual.”
Elliot swallowed. “Too bold?”
“No,” she said, shaking her head slowly. “Exactly bold enough.”
