Ellie sat up in bed and checked the time.5.05 am.
"Fuck" she thought, "it must be serious" as she pressed the dial symbol on her phone. Her brother answered on the 3rd ring.
"Hi, El, thanks for the call. I wasn't sure what to do, Sam's gone missing"
Sam was Paul's much younger girlfriend, probably now at 21 or so, a full 14 years younger than Paul.
Their partnership had caused some scandal in the family when they began seeing each other around 5 years ago, as she was barely 16, but she had been ultimately accepted, mainly due to her pacifying effect on the previously quite volatile, Paul.
"When did yoy last see her?" Ellie asked, "and why do you think she's missing?"
"She went out with friends for a meal and then drink, yesterday lunchtime. They all got home by early evening, she didn't. Is it too soon to call in?"
"No" replied Ellie, imagining Sam, with a hangover, still kipping on someone's sofa, "give the local station a call and if they don't answer, phone the emergency line. They'll sort you out"
"She's been going out a bit more, recently, El and has been a bit more evasive with me. I'm worried she's been mixing with her old friends again"
Another reason for the family's initial reluctance to accept Sam was the fact she was the youngest daughter of one of Newcastle's biggest drug dealers, who's reputation was cemented with violence and intimidation.
"Cheers, El. I'll get back to you. Thanks"
The phone line went dead. Paul, had always been a little bit the black sheep of the family, always in minor scraps as a kid, but had, with Sam's help, calmed down, of late, so to see him genuinely concerned, worried Ellie.
She checked her 'London' phone. A message from Amy.
"Free tomorrow, I mean today? Brunch? Xx"
Ellie's heart skipped a beat as she texted back, "Yes 😘" |
