With so many mirrors across the work out area, this is hard to miss. She enters the workout area, his eyes are drawn to her pale green eyes across the empty hall. He does a half smile in the general direction rather than at her. There is no way that she didn’t notice him checking her out, he might as well smile, he thought. The peach clothing just covered some of her. Big sport bra type top and tight shorts in matching colour that is made of stretchy yoga material. The V in front feels as big as the room to him. Take your eyes off her crotch, he tells himself. But doesn’t go too far.

His eyes are drawn to her midriff, flat, taught, toned with definition and he counts 4 of what is likely a 6 pack. Even from the distance, it was unmissable. He lingered his gaze in that area as it got clearer and closer.

Wait.. why is she coming here. The whole gym is empty and there are atleast 15 other treadmills, and other equipment in the upmarket ‘club’.

He refocuses with effort to a kind face that is smiling at him. He is glad that he isn’t fully out of shape, his breathing was steady after 15 mins of brisk walk. To her, he must look unfit, his mind tells him.

He smiles back as she sets her self in the treadmill next to him.

5 more mins in the treadmill at 7kmph, he is sweaty and sees that his heart rate is at 150 consistently. As he glances across, she is at double the speed, hardly breaking a drop of sweat.

She checks him looking at her dashboard and smiles at him again and says

‘I can go faster’. Presses the button and adds 5 more kph.

‘That’s the maximum it can go’ she winks at him.

He feels himself flush and sweat more profusely. His heart rate at 165 even though he just watched this 20 something girl go faster with his speed remaining constant. He presses the cool down button and says

‘That’s my learning today, the top speed of this treadmill’

‘Haha. I can teach you more if you like. It’s boring to work out alone anyway’

‘That’s very kind of you. But Are you sure you wanna be stuck with an old git sweating it out at 7 kph?’

She laughs at his boring joke, only genuinely and without missing a beat at 19 kph. Does she ever sweat, he wonders as he feels his heart rate go down.

She slows down and says ‘that’s no problem at all, you don’t look a day over 40 anyway’ as she winks at him.

He smiles and wipes his brow with the hand towel.

‘I am only older’ winks back ‘thank you, I have been thinking of getting help’

‘It’s set then. I am C and I am normally in later in the evenings’

‘Nice to meet you C, I am J and I am never here’ he laughs at his own joke and she joins in.

A couple of mins of idle chat later, they both stop. He gathers that they both work in the same industry only that she started recently. Like his younger days, she has started travelling and Is keen to stay fit.

He notices a dark patch of sweat under her arms. Looking at the mirror, his T-shirt was soaked. It makes him happy and it shows in his face.

‘What’s funny’ she asks

‘Ohh. Something silly, you wouldn’t wanna know’

‘Only I do’ she taps on his arms as if to nudge him.

‘May be next time, I need to take the iron man back home’ he points to the little one who was throwing a heavy ball onto a bouncy mesh and catching it.

‘Haha. I will let you go, but I will get it out of you next time’

2 days later..

He walks into the health club, later than what he is used to. His mind was cluttered after 2 days of the grind, work always resets normal life. He runs operations and there is a crisis every week and at times every day. It is a kind of job that makes personal life messy. With body of auto-pilot and mind still working out best option to re-route supplies, he changes and forgets about the rest of what he is supposed to do.

- - I know what you are thinking, no one forgets a pretty lady’s offer to help. Well, some people do. Narrative switches from the boring man to the bubbly lady - -

She had been warming up in the weights area, she liked it here and used the main gym only if it is empty. Quick glance at the watch told her that he is late, may be he backed-out. Just coming off a relationship, she had developed an aversion towards men her age. There is never a normal conversation and it either ended-up in a proposal for dating, hook-up or the other person wanting more. She had decided to take a few months to focus on work with no complications.

She looks at the giant clock and he is 20 mins late. Or may be not coming, what if he doesn’t know this area exist in the gym he is paying for. Surely, it can’t be, can it?

She wanders down the steps and sees him on the rowing machine. Something about it, made her happy. His eyes are fixated on the small read out, lost in his own thoughts. Body stretching and contracting, his face glowing under the lights with a sheen of sweat ‘stop it’ she tells herself.

Even when she walks and stands next to him, he doesn’t stop or slow down.

‘Hello stranger..’

She watches him come to life, recognition and something else kicking in.

There is nothing for it, he laughed his goofy laugh.

Extricating himself from the rowing machine, he walks alongside her. A few eyes looking at this unlikely combo, he tries stay on her side rather than behind.

Upstairs area is smaller than the main gym area, but still looks huge. There are some empty studios along the corridors, may be it is the quiet time. There are two other people minding their own workouts.

‘This is a whole new world’ he quips.

‘Did you not have an induction when you signed up? They do free sessions and also personal training’

‘I just pay the money, also, I prefer not to talk to young and fit people’

She laughs at him as he adds unconvincingly ‘I am sure the feeling is mutual’

‘Who are you calling old?’ She faux-punches him on the rib cage. Her beaming smile doesn’t dull the pain that he shouldn’t be feeling with a playful punch.

This place doesn’t have the friendly equipment from downstairs. Section with weights, dead-lifts and strange contraptions with ropes, cables etc. there is also bouncy balls and yoga mats on the side.

‘Equipment feels hardcore, I am now thinking that my job here will be to clean them’

How many bad jokes can I get away with, he wonders as she moves the weight to 85 pounds in the frame.

‘The principle is the same as downstairs, this place allows you to workout the muscle you want. I will may be show you some core work outs I do’

The next 45 mins disappear with her showing him, then him reducing the weights to half and trying 3 sets each. She watches, helps where required and does her own thing.

He feels her touch, a few times. Once or twice, her top rubs on his shoulders as she spots him from behind. Nothing happens apart from the sense of smell from her. He finds her mixture of morning’s perfume that is lingering after the days work, mixed with her sweat from the work-out and the natural fragrance intoxicating. Finds himself drawing more of it in, it’s a heady experience and he takes it all in.

It had been 2 weeks since the first training together, they had been working out together once every 2 or 3 days.

She had a job that made her travel in the country, mostly London and occasionally a bit far. Her work is exciting and allowed her to learn a lot. Just occasional long days and her doing a lot of grunt work for more senior people to take credit. Everyone pays their dues, she was told by almost everyone.

Training with him was fun, his sarcasm and wit made her laugh. For the first time in a while, she is engaging with a man without being hit on. He is more mature, soaks up everything she tells him and tries. She smiles at the thought of how his eyes often get fixated on her tummy. This was a pleasant change of pace as most men are fixated a few inches higher.

May be he is a monk, or his dicks stopped working. Wait, why am I thinking of his dick!

She pulls in to the car park and parks in an empty space as she noticed the car opposite’s door open. It is him, but he is on a call and doesn’t even gives a second look at her bright yellow car.

His auto-pilot kicked in as he gave the instructions to someone at work. He has 20 yards to cut this call politely, which he does.

They are at their usual place, upstairs. Flat on the floor, she is showing him some basic stretches that she does before and after. She looks amazing in her peach kit and his eyes linger on her taut tummy.

There is no one else in the floor and she catches him checking her tummy.

As soon as she says it, she regrets the impulsive bravado. What the hell is wrong with you, her inner voice admonishes. She has no idea what possessed her to ask this mild mannered man touch her body.

For his part, he looks genuinely confused and politely says

‘You have such amazing core strength’

She laughs at his paraphrasing, nods her head

He crouches down, his knees bent and gently places his fingers on her abs. Looks at her as if asking for permission to proceed.

This time his fingers just tease her taut lines, gently stroking them at first and then his palm pushing against her abs. His eyes, they feel as if her tummy is his whole world, nothing else would matter.

His hands, the strength when he applies pressure in contrast to the tenderness with which his fingers teases her vein.

As she looks down from his face, she doesn’t believe it. Sticking out from his body is a clear bulge. Looks massive and just then his finger inadvertently entered the hem of her tights

Her guttural moan shook him off his focus.

‘Fuck’ is all she heard from him and a few shuffles of him stepping back later, he says ‘sorry, I got carried away’

His table at work has the 4th coffee of the day, since switching to decaf, he feels that there is a sensible way to deal with this addiction.
