Fareham

Jenny was a beauty technician and was as glamorous as the products she sold at her counter in the city centre department store.

Aged 22 she had worked there now for 2 months with Sandra , 33 and Jan 26. Sandra and Jan were quite close. Snobbish too but Jenny got on better with Beth, 31 the area manager who popped in once a week.

It was a Wednesday morning one autumn and Jenny was back in for three days. The store was quiet and Jenny was feeling she'd struggle to meet her targets if custom didn't pick up. Sandra was out back in the stock room and Jan was pouting on the other counter when Jenny's mobile began to vibrate...number withheld. Jenny didn't answer as they were not supposed to unless it was like for their kids etc. Jenny had none nor ever knew her parents and was raised by foster families none of whom she settled with. No boyfriend either and new to town she let the call go to voicemail. Jenny was watching the call notification ping when a voice startled her..

"Ahem, I'd like some perfume" asked a mature woman.

She stared coldly at Jenny who quickly responded. Jan would take any hesitation as bad service and would pull her up on it being the new trainee. Jenny was good but that caused jealousy among her colleagues who would patronise her and jump in and nick her sales.

"Of course madam. Which one?"

"Oh nevermind." said the women "you can get back to your phone" and walked away .

Jenny watched the woman walk away and was irritated by her response.

"You've got to get quicker" announced Jan who suddenly appeared next to her. She smirked and walked away obviously to later tell Sandra that she caught Jenny on her phone and who lost a customer.

Jenny felt slightly sick but was pleased as another woman came to her and then spent three hundred pounds on products.

Custom picked up and her lunch break came. As usual Jen walked out into the shopping arcade and bought a baguette from one of the retailers. Waiting for her order Jen checked her voicemail. Silence except for a scratchy background noise. Bemused she hung up and looked out into the throng of people around the centre. Stood afar coldly staring was the lady from earlier who had walked away. She narrowed her eyes at Jen then disappeared among the crowd...

Fareham

Jen sat alone in the shopping centre eating her cheese baguette. She felt a bit unnerved and worried that when she got back she'd be in trouble for allegedly using her phone.

"Anyone sat here?" said a voice.

"Er no. Feel free" replied Jen to a tall young man.

He sat himself down and put his bag onto another adjacent seat next to him. He took out his phone and called a number and began to chat to a mate.

Jen hurried eating her baguette as she didn't want to be back late.

As she finished the last bit she noticed the young man gone but he'd left his bag.

She grabbed it and looked around. He was nowhere to be seen and she hadn't really noticed anything distinctive about him anyway. She could have left it but was worried it would get pinched so she went in search of security who said they'd take care of it.

A minute or so late back at the counter, Sandra and Jan stood waiting...

"I'm so sorry.." fretted Jen.

"Tschh" hissed Sandra "..and I've been told you lost a customer whilst fiddling with your phone."

"But...."

"No she didn't!" confirmed a loud voice.

It was the woman customer herself.

"I was too impatient. Had a dreadful start to my day" she continued her stern face now radiant with a more positive attitude.

Jenny moved around the counter to serve and the now happier woman looked to her.

"Now I'd like to try a few products to see what suits me best for my friend's daughter's wedding.."

For the next hour Jen advised and sat the woman in a chair until they found the most suitable colours for her complexion. Actually she was a rather attractive lady, plump but rather pretty. With make-up, perfume and moisturiser she spent a cool grand.

"I'm sorry for earlier " she said as she paid and left. Jan and Sandra looked on jealousy.

Jenny smiled and carried on the day and meeting her sales target. She left for home in the dark and went to catch her bus. Her phone rang and she answered it without looking at the caller id.

"Hello?" answered Jen.

Silence.

"Hello.... owww!"

Her shoulder was prodded sharpely from behind. It was the woman customer.

"Oh I'm sorry dear but I was wondering if you had time for a quick drink as a further way of apology?"

Jenny hung up just as the scratchy sound was occuring again.

"Oh er.."

"Please" said the smiling woman.

Jenny thought briefly and agreed. After all there wasn't much to rush home for. It began to drizzle and the two women hurried to a lively bar.

They sat at a table next to the glass frontage and a waiter came with a drinks menu.

Jenny felt a little nervous but the woman smiled and spoke.

"I'm Karen by the way, and I just wanted to apologise for being...well a bit of a cow."

Jenny laughed as did Karen.

"I saw you getting your lunch but hesitated to say anything. Didn't want to come across as weird lol."

Jenny smiled and the waiter came back to take the order.

"Bottle of sparkling water and a bottle of chardonnay. Is that OK with you...er..?"

"Jenny...and yes thank-you"

The drinks came and one bottle of wine was quickly followed by another.

Karen was full of good humour and talked about herself and her life. She owned properties and lived off the rent paid. She was 48 and a businesses woman and was well travelled. She had been married but had been widowed but left a fair amount of money by her husband..

Jenny told about her briefer more troubled life. Karen listened intently. Her booted foot moved closer and touched Jenny's and one hand moved and touched a hand also. Jenny shed a tear thinking of her lonely young life.

"I feel for you dear" said Karen "company and friendship are so precious a thing.. ...would you like to come back to mine for dinner?"

Jenny's phone vibrated and the caller id was again withheld.

"Hello?!" she answered abruptly now clearly a bit tipsy.

The scratching sound was as before the reply but slightly more louder.

Jenny hung up "Fucks sake I keep getting these weird calls."

"Best ignore dear. Are you coming back to mine?"

"Yess" slurred Jenny and Karen stroked her hand her eyes gleaming with delight.. .

Fareham

Jenny and Karen scrambled laughing into the car. The heavens had opened and it was raining cats and dogs .

Jenny got in and belted up. Karen got in too and lent over and kissed Jenny on the lips.

Jenny had suspected Karen's true intentions but had some earlier experiences with other girls.

"Where do you live then?" asked Jen.

"Several miles out in the sticks" replied Karen.

Fortunately Jen forgot that her driver was over the limit as she sped off into the darkness. The rain poured down reducing visibility but Karen seemed confident to travel at speed out and along the country lanes. The wind had picked up and leaves and twigs blew about. Flashes of distant lightening occasionally lit up the cloudy sky.

Twists and turns and very narrow lanes it seemed much further than a few miles. Karen didn't speak the whole journey but looked intensely ahead at the road.

Suddenly a deer was caught in the headlights and Karen screeched to a halt narrowly missing the beast.

"Damn" she muttered "I'll have to shoot one now " she laughed "keep the freezer topped up."

Jen didn't reply but felt a little uneasy. She was largely vegetarian.

Eventually the car turned into a drive and through large iron gates which were closed quietly behind the still speeding vehicle.

Karen gleamed "My late husband left me well cared for."

"Erm..what did he die from ?" asked Jen.

"Assisted dying" replied Karen.

The drive was long and after another mile the car skidded to a gravely halt in front of a large old house. Jenny looked on impressed but nervous as the skies raced overhead and moonlight popped through the lively clouds. Only the porch was lit.

"Come on. Let's go and eat" smiled Karen.

Jenny got out and scurried to the door behind Karen. Dogs barked in the distance.

"Hurry up Karoly. He's already let the dogs loose."

Fortunately the large door was unbolted from behind and a short man in a jacket and bow tie let the ladies in.

"Evening mam" he said in a rich east European accent "dinner is ready" and he quickly bolted the door back up as the barking grew ever closer .

"Let's freshen up first then go and dine" said Karen who scurried up the grand staircase.

Karoly who was originally from Hungary showed Jenny to a powder room adjacent to the old hallway.

Inside she used the loo for a pee and washed her hands and took liberal use of the perfume available. Then she went back into the hallway. A grandfather clock struck 10pm and Karoly stood by a door with a large white napkin draped over one forearm.

Karen reappeared on the landing having changed into a scarlet dress and heels with a sparkling diamond necklace around her neck.

"Mmm dinner smells wonderful. Let's eat!" she cheered and hurried down the steps leading Jen into a large dimly lit dining room. Ahead was a table with forty chairs but only the end two laid for dinner.

"Sit sit" said Karen placing Jenny at one end and sitting herself several metres away at the other. Karoly served a soup and poured a white wine.

"Hungarian " he proudly announced.

"I have a place in Jamaica " said Karen loudly"and this a local soup."

Jenny tasted the rich broth.

"Mm quite spicy . What is it?"

"Goat's head soup but more offal than meat" she replied.

Jenny took a few more small slurps and then put down her spoon.

Karoly approached her "You must finish" he ordered. Meekly Jen obliged but felt queasy with every mouthful.

Karen downed hers and cried "my favourite. It's an aphrodisiac. Works for me. But never for my husband. Ha."

Karoly cleared the dishes and returned with a very large sliver of liver and onions with creamed mash.

"Ox" said Karen.

Jenny cut into hers and blood oozed across the porcelain plate.

"Ah..."

"It's at its very best served bloody" whispered Karoly and he stepped back into the darkness .

"Eat, eat! We have a busy night ahead of us" yelled Karen laughing "music please butler."

A record was put onto an old gramophone and a waltz was played.

Karen laughed and began to sway with the music.

Jenny regretted being there and her phone began to vibrate once more ...

Halfway through the mains Jenny had managed the mash but only the edges of the pink liver. The onions sat in a red puddle of ooze. She stared at the missed call.

"Chuck it away" advised Karen who was now stood beside her.

"But it cost me seven hundred..."

Karen picked up the phone and with a good aim hurled it into the tureen of soup that stood at the side of the room.

"Bravo mam" grinned Karoly who made no attempt to rescue the sinking phone.

Jenny was horrified and stood up abruptly.

"It was clearly bothering you" said Karen "my husband's ended up bothering him.."

"How..?" asked the distressed guest transfixed by the silver tureen and the dead phone now at the bottom of it.

"I stuffed it down his throat" laughed Karen and she grabbed Jenny by the hand leading her out to the stairs. Jen looked round for a landline.

"Were the dogs starved the last few days?"

"Yes " smiled the butler loyally to his wicked employer.

"See we have no phone Jenny and you wouldn't make it out. You'd be consumed by the dobermans."

Jenny was dragged up the stairs by the stronger Karen. She fainted.

"Carry her" ordered Karen to her butler who fireman style carried Jenny to the master bedroom. She was hand cuffed to the headboard of a large bed.

Karen switched on a large screen. Three robed figures appeared on it from a dark wooded grade lit from behind by a bonfire. Torches flickered from the trunks of trees.

They removed their hoods. Sandra, Jan and Beth smiled at Karen.

"Well done girls. Hope the new job advert has been put out? asked Karen.

"It has" the three answered in unison.

Jenny came to as Karen stripped naked and approached the bed.

"Nobody wil hear you scream" she beamed "my husband disapproved of my lesbianism . Went off his right mind, let himself go, didn't bathe, hair and fingernails grew...ended up crawling around this house like a creature. Couldn't let it continue ...so i murdered him with his phone. Lol"

"But why me?" asked Jenny.

"Young blood to placate his spirit. Used my fellow witches to employ you , unnerve you. Makes for easier pickings..."

"You bitch!" cried Jenny.

"Hope you like toys. My husband did..."

The door opened and Karoly entered with a silver tray and lid held in one hand. With the other he reached for a mobile phone that was ringing a number.

"No answer. Must be in the soup " he laughed. He dropped the phone and lifted the lid off the tray.

A withered hand with long fingernails was on it. The evil butler lifted the hand and scratched the tray.

The clock struck twelve and the witches laughed.....

Happy Halloween...
