This initially happened several years ago now and through some private interest being shown to a post I made I thought id take the time to put it into a story for all to enjoy. I got married 43 years ago and 15 years later is where it all began. My wife was visiting friends over a weekend and had left early on the Friday morning catching the train to London before proceeding to East Anglia, I had work commitments so couldn’t go with her and wasn’t to bothered if the truth be known actually thinking it would be good to do as I please around the house for a few days without being nagged to do minor jobs. By mid afternoon I had managed to slip away and headed home, as I opened the front door a slip of paper was on the floor from my wife’s parents who lived 2 roads along from ours asking if id like to pop around about 6pm for a bite to eat and a chat knowing that I was on my own and a couple of beers. I have always got on well with them both Dave (55) and Marg (53) so this wasn’t unusual in the slightest, I showered dressing very casually and made my way around just before 6knocking on their door.

The door was opened by Dave greeting me and leading me into the lounge just as Marg was standing from the sofa giving me a kiss on the cheek telling me that dinner wouldn’t be long and heading into the kitchen, Dave gave me a beer and ushered me into the dining room where I saw the table laid and wine already in the glasses opposite where each person was going to be sitting. The foods smell was making me hungry; I didn’t have to wait long before Marg re-entered carrying the food, throughout the meal the chat never stopped between us all nor did the wine flow and before very long we were on our 3rd bottle. I took their lead as they left the table and sat in one of their armchairs as they cleared the table before returning to the lounge and sitting either end of the sofa across from where I was. The conversation continued between us all before Dave asked me what I thought of them as in-laws over the period of my marriage to their daughter, I explained I thought that they had been very supportive to us and that I enjoyed their company, good was the reply from him the next words coming out of his mouth caught me totally off guard. He said both looking at me directly we both enjoy open and candid chat with select others and that he hoped that comment hadn’t offended me and that drinking wine often loosened their tongues. I wasn’t sure what to say but must have looked like a goldfish with my mouth open as I tried to find words.
