The start

His arrival was unplanned, unexpected, but not in the least unwelcome. Well, at least not by me. Cathy, my girlfriend of some six months now, had rented the cottage on the coast, perched almost on the edge of a hill overlooking a small, sheltered bay. lt commanded a sublime view out into the Atlantic, but had been chosen mostly for its solitude and privacy. It was an area I’d been to many times before, somewhere I’d spoken of as idyllic, and she was eager to see. Moreover, it would be a break from the rat race she said, if only for a few days. A chance to spend some quality time together.

Or at least that had been the plan.

It was almost pure chance when we ran into him in the Green Bar, a stylish surfer hangout cum chic eatery. Stood at the bar and waiting to order, I almost missed the athletic figure who stood parallel to me until, the barman enquiring who was next, we looked at one another and realised.

“Jake!” My exclamation blurted out across the bar so loud that heads turned, his response mirrored mine exactly.

“James. How are you? It’s been…ages.”
