About 1,000 people have been forced to flee a huge mountain fire on the holiday island of Gran Canaria.

Troops have been drafted in to help 200 firefighters battle the blaze, which currently spans nearly 2,500 acres, about 20 miles from the capital Las Palmas.

Helicopters and planes are being used to drop water on the area in an attempt to tackle the raging inferno.

Strong winds and temperatures of more than 32C (90F) are hampering efforts to douse the flames.

The fire poses a threat to several towns as well as the Tamadaba natural park on the west of the island, according to the authorities.

This is awful, I've friends in maspolomas and family are staying in Anfi..

It’s a fair way from Maspalomas and Anfi, so they will be fine. Were staying at Anfi Week of 24th August

There's absolutely no sign that there are fires (we're in PDI at the moment). We saw some smoke on the distant hills on Saturday but that's been it. It wasn't until a friend back home asked about it that we even knew there was a fire.

We’ve been following it and just seen this online..

“The Gran Canaria forest fire did not reactivate overnight thanks to constant effort by firefighters. It is now under control with no flames or smoke.

A second fire, started deliberately, was also extinguished close to Guayadeque.”

Just watched a new fire pop up further south of the old ones. Huge mushroom cloud of smoke! Looked to be maybe 15 miles north east of Maspalomas? Still no risk to the resort areas.
