We have been to PDI a few times but staying at La Mirage for the first time soon (with my wife)

We were just wondering - What is the best way to get to the beach/Hut 4 area?

Is it walkable or is a taxi the best option?

Kildare

It is walkable but its about a twenty five minute stroll to the start of the beach and then another ten/fifteen mins stroll to kiosk 4.

Totally agree with this. Although the walk is nice, it's just easier.

DO Not - walk and then try and cut the corner off and go across the dunes. (Unless you are really prepared) We did this the first time we went. On the advice off some dick head who convinced us it would only take a few mins.

Half way in we discovered it's a lot harder than you think trekking over dunes to then find you'd forgot all your water. I was genuinely scared we'd get into trouble but just about made it. Ruined the day for us and nearly the holiday.

Take a cab stroll up the beach along the waters edge and enjoy.

Good advice.

I would just add that if anyone is actually thinking about doing that walk, your footwear is VERY important.

There is a plant that grows in the dunes (don't know its name) and it sheds little seed pods that are not only like razors but they actually nail themselves to the soles of your shoes. They are concentrated more to the rear of the dunes. The closer to the sea you get they tend to thin out then disappear.

The first time we did it I wore Crocs (never again) and not only did I manage to get a couple of these things inside (painful) the soles resembled hob nail boots by the time we got back to base.

Either walk to Faro 2 to grab a taxi on the rank and fresh water ect from Hipo supermarket, or walk out to Ave Touroperator Neckermann and flag one down.

The walk along the dry River bed is great with good shoes and the short cut around the camels is an option but better on the way back for a bit of fun with the setting sun at 18.00.

Thank you for all the great advice and comments

On previous visits when staying in PDI locations we have mostly walked - so we are accustomed to some dune walking

But I think a taxi from La Mirage to the beach sounds good, with an occasional walk back through the dunes on the way home - Have also noted about decent footwear and water - Thanks everyone

First time we went in the dunes, it nearly caused us a divorce lol. Mrs DD thought she was going to die & was screaming to get her out of there. I'm laughing now but wasn't then lol

Don't get us wrong.

We actually enjoyed the walk (once we got it sorted) but it isn't for the ill prepared or faint hearted. Cut in diagonally at the camel station and you will soon figure out where the swingers are, if that is what you are looking for of course. Or just carry on and you will hit the beach at or close to kiosk 4.

However water, especially in the hotter months, is a necessity, as is decent footwear. Flip flops are NOT recommended.

There are no taxis at Faro 2

Just go to the main road and hail one or the reception at mirage will call one for you (50c extra)
