If you are on 3, they offer free data in some countries including Spain. If you are with another network, ask, it may be standard practice.

It's more the data charges we want to avoid, I've been told to turn off data roaming but not sure if I can connect to WhatsApp and fabs by doing this, sorry to appear thick but technology is not my thing lol

With data roaming off you would only be able to use whatapp and fab if connected to wifi. At the hotel is am in that's 18 euro per week

Turn off data roaming and use WiFi only for internet.if you don't turn off data roaming, data will still be used as many apps run in the background of your phone, even when you arent using the internet, thus running up charges.

Most hotels offer free WiFi in the reception areas but be careful as the lounges and rooms often require additional payment before you can access the WiFi. Whatsapp is definitely the easiest option for messaging. Remember many bars also offer you free WiFi so when your out and about that's also a possible. Just make sure data roaming is off when your out and about as it saves a nasty shock when you get home and get your bill. Enjoy yr holiday.

For virginmobile customers they offer data packages which you can top up during your stay.

If we go out we tick the data usage 'mobile data' box on the phone to go online.......but we un-tick it asap afterwards.

At our hotel or apartment we use their wi-fi.

If you just want to use wifi in the hotel or bar, switch on flight mode. It switchs off all data, but allows you to switch on wifi only (no network charges)

I'm with EE too and just turn off data roaming when in GC.

When you arrive EE will send you an automated message asking if you'd like a data package.

I usually take them up on the offer. It's £3 a day for 100mb ish. If you don't use it one day then you don't get charged.

I turn data roaming on only when I want to use it and keep an eye on how much I'm using.

The hotel receptions usually offer free wifi and most bars and restaurants do too.

How bizarre?! Just received the following from EE..

"Good news, we're improving your Euro Pass. From 11 May, you'll get 500MB of full-speed data for the same price as today (£4/day). It's automatic, so you don't need to do anything. And that's not all, from 30 April our standard EU roaming rates are also dropping."

Good eh?
