Hi, just looking for some advice on car hire in GC. We will be collecting and returning the car to the airport and staying for 7 days.

Looking at a similar thread from last year Autoreisen seemed to be the recommended one. However it seems they are no longer located in the airport and use a shuttle which puts us off them.

Awe, I didn’t know they’ve relocated off site, I know last year they were at the very far end of arrivals, but I’d still use em, they are the only ones I use in canaries and have for years, reliable and not a rip off ..

We still use them but FYI we had to wait about 40 minutes for the shuttle bus to show up after we rang them. Still quicker than a tour company transfer but not as quick as the express bus

We always used them too, in March and for sept we have booked with TopCar.

No issues in March but friends who came after us did have to pick up the car from an off site location a short walk from the terminal.

They have been the most cost effective we have found.

It's only a few minutes to the new autoreisen office and it only.too a few moments to get the car, and it was returned to the airport car park which was handy but just the wait on the shuttle bus. It certainly wouldn't put me off and we had an almost new car too

We used PlusCar, they were cheaper than Autoreisen and they worked out great. You have to call them from the airport but they showed up fast.

Autoreisen still seems an option then. Just to check can the car be dropped off at the airport, so the shuttle bus is only needed for collection?

We went on a car hire comparison website and found one for under £65 for a week, pick up and drop off at the airport. Arranged our excess insurance beforehand separately for £10 too

Top Car are brilliant.

I was foolish enough to try a company called Record & Go who could best be described as a scam. They are not located at the airport and rely on a shuttle system. They also close at 10pm so if your flight is late you are left stranded at the airport. You are then given 6 hours to collect your vehicle. But since they are closed between 10 and 8 this is impossible. When I returned at 9am the next morning the car had been rented out but an alternative available at a greater price and new T&C.

Perhaps I should have googled planetcarrentals and read their reviews before handing over my money.

Used autoriesen this week collected car at car park quickest time handover in all the years. Paperwork done car there ready full to full hard part might be leaving it back but so far no complaints

Cheapest is not always the best. Trustpilot etc are your friends. Always used Auto Reisan and still do even though they are now off site. No biggy. The plus points are that you don’t have to pay on booking. Always book on Nov/ Dec for the following October. Then a couple of weeks before travel check prices again. Often considerably cheaper. So just cancel and rebook

with no penalties. Also , unlike some some companies they are not precious about a few scrapes and scuffs. Still take our annual excess insurance.

Never had a problem with autoriesen and have used them for 7 times or so. Usually fill up on drive back.

I did same this year booked early checked price again cheaper cancel rebook never an issue

I have to compliment Top Car. The first time I rented from them, the night Record & Go (to hell) left me stranded, I've spent more time buying a loaf of bread than it took to sort me out. Amazing service. I got a good deal from them the second time even though I hadn't precooked. Excellent service.

We used Record & Go last week. The hire was cheap, €85 for the week and the car was fine, and transfer from the airport was quick, but our departure flight time was changed and the booking wasn't updated before we left the UK.

We needed to drop the car off 5 hours later than originally booked. It was still within the 8 day period as we'd collected at 7pm and wanted to drop off at 2pm instead of 9am. They wanted to charge us $150!

We dropped it off the evening before so that we wouldn't have all the palaver of getting up early & wasting most of the day, which was a bit of a pain and cost us extra taxi fees of €50.

Further to my previous posts, used Autoreisen again in October. Scuffed the front plastic bumper/valance rather badly - down to the black plastic, on a low wall. Thought "Shit. That`s going to cost me." On return, they didn`t say a word, and they saw it immediately.

Moral- DON`T necessarily go for the cheapest (Autoreisen is very reasonable anyway). Do consider the aforementioned. We can all have scrapes.

Also, as mentioned previously - Trustpilot etc are your friends.

Always found CiCar to be good value, and never had a problem renting from them over about 8 years.

Be aware though the access in & out of the basement level carpark (where cars are kept adjacent to terminal) is very tight between concrete walls & pillars.

Might be a little stressful for anyone not used to left hand drive!

Last June. I managed to leave the car lights on . Yeap flat battery. Oh shit... called . They sent replacement car. Thought omg whats this going to cost. NOTHING

Record & Go now refunded me £130 of my £170 for a car I could not hire because they "rented it out" an hour after they opened even though I had 6 hours to collect it. They don't seem to care what reputation they get.

Because they are not located at the airport they have you at a disadvantage when they change the deal. Avoid at all costs.

Every time I have tried Autoreisen they haven't had an automatic.

Autoreisen do get high demand for the Toyota Yaris Hybrid (Automatic) which is their cheapest car but for just a little more you can get the Citreon C4 auto and unless your leaving it until the very last minute they always seem to have those available.

Autoreisen and Cicar are both excellent.

Both have genuine fully comp insurance so no stresses if you do get a scratch and both operate a fair fuel policy where you return it with the same amount as when you took it.

Autoreisen slightly edge it on price though so they would be my first choice.

I also find Autoreisen customer service really good. When I was over earliet in the year despite normally having an automatic this time I had booked a manual as back then that was a fair bit cheaper. HoweverI hurt my right arm just before coming away which meant changing gear was going to be mildly (though not seriously) a bit uncomfortable. When I mentioned it in passing the young lady stopped the paperwork, made a call and said they would upgrade me to an automatic at no extra charge.

I have used them for years now and would be very reluctant to change to anyone else.

If you pay with a Credit Card, yes, Debit, they take 200€ deposit which is paid back when you return the car

Won't ever use TopCar again

Absolute shit show

Hired an automatic car, gave me a manual one, had to pay extra for the swap (fair dos)

Took the 200€ deposit AGAIN when I had it agreed they would use the first 200€ deposit, just transfer it over, the girl then LIED and said that wasn't agreed

Pulled up the paperwork, BOOM! in black and white, new guy came to deal with me, he was good but then proceeded to talk me through hiring a car online and making sure its Automatic.....Sir, I did, I checked and double checked, YOUR office effed it up

Anyway, got an automatic car for the next week from TopCar but I won't use them again

We only use top car, with the super insurance. I would say we’ve used them over 50 times now. Fantastic service. We do it all online and the car is waiting for us to sign and drive away.

We have took the car back with a number of issues and they have never had to pay extra.

As long as you follow the simple steps online it’s the best service by a mile. We have tried all of them, but only use top car now.
