Been seeing a lot in the press about locals in the canaries protesting about tourism.

Is it just the typical fake news ? Or has anyone experienced anything?

we have already been to Gran Canaria twice this year and Tenerife once and didn't see or hear anything!

Costa Del Sol

The completely blown out of proportion story has stemmed from locals complaining about the lack of rental housing as many people by their properties to rent out to tourists.

Costa Del Sol, Costa Blanca and most of the Islands depend on tourism and it makes up a huge chunk of their economy and the Spanish are more than aware of this. It is a very small minority of people who are complaining.

We live here and have not seen anything. It appears to be a bit of clickbait story

Forget what the press will suggest. I live here and have a lot of contact to canarian people. They are nice, open and calm. Of course we have the problem here with the rent. But everything is more expensive, all over the world. Many canarian people working for tourism and the know, this Brings the money Here to this Islands.

It is true. There are plenty of reliable news stories in the Spanish Press about it, and the Spanish Local Government and National Government have been asking people to calm down and meet with representatives to discuss workable solutions.

It mostly revolves around the shortage of affordable homes, but also poor wages with regard to the massive wealth that tourism brings the Islands (and mainland Spain for that matter).

If local owners can rent holiday homes to tourists for up to 10 times what they can get in indigenous rents, what are they going to do? Not hard to guess the answer. Also, who would want to build a set of local homes when you can build a tourist resort and make a fortune.

It has parallels with the Welsh Village syndrome and AirBnB Lets etc.

As most of the Tourism in the Canaries is Spanish owned, it's kind of a problem of their own making.

I think the answer is going to come in zoned local housing eventually.

Also, the Golden Ticket Visa is coming to an end too. - Same in Portugal.

So far, local government are reminding people where their income comes from and also say that the protests are small.

Without doubt it will grow.
