"I would recommend you rent first before you buy. I live in La Nucia just 10 mins drive north from Benidorm. The cheaper areas are obviously inland. You can do some research once you are here by looking at the property websites..Idealista is a very good one " Good advice on renting first. We've known many people who have jumped in and bought a property, then after a few months realise that they don't really like the area. Paradise in July can look very different in January and vice versa. Also while many people do like living out in the sticks, rural living in Spain isn't for everybody. You also have to think about infrastructure. If you are halfway up a mountain with chest pains the nearest hospital nearly an hour away isn't much good. That actually happened to someone we knew a few years ago. He died.

"Hi guys, we are thinking if moving to Spain in 2023 and wondered if any ex pats could give us some tips please? We've looked at the post Brexit stuff but any help would be appreciated. We are looking at Alicante (especially around Benidorm). TIA A&S xx" Hi, remember that you can only spend six months of the year in Spain due to Brexit. It is very difficult to get an extended visa. Unless you buy a property valued at more than €500,000, that is

"I thought there was also a visa for longer than 3 months, but not permanent." As I understand it, the friend is talking about wanting to 'live' in Spain

"Visas option 1 is NLV at approximately €30K in the bank or equivalent investments per year. You are not allowed to work (for 5 years) Option 2 is a Self employed visa requiring business plans and investment etc Option 3 is golden visa.. invest €500k in Spain Option 4 is the Digital Nomad visa.. this isn't in place yet All these apply to non EU citizens. The best route by far is to get an EU passport, if possible, then non of the above applies All thanks to Brexit!! It's still possible though... We are researching now... Lots of info online.. Tax is also an issue.. particularly selling in UK and having to declare in Spain.. timing is very important. Oh of course you can do 90 days in 180 as a tourist across Schengen. Good luck" I've screenshot this and have it ready to show anyone who asks about moving here! I have no clue since Brexit what to do. Lol

"I'd suggest looking at your pension "pot" as well. If you have plans to pay for your house with the 25% of your pension that you can take tax free in the UK after 55 - be aware that the Spanish tax authorities will regard it as income and tax accordingly. So I would be inclined to take the money out of your pension pot prior to your move to Spain. " Well pointed out. That's what I did before getting my residencia and saved myself a good few thousand pounds in tax.

"Rent first for sure. Sort you tax situation out before you buy. Residency or not and understand the tax difference. Can be hard to sell inland. Also utilities are sometimes crazy high in some areas. Example some 3 bed villas over 700 plus a month electric or 1000 for 3 months water if you have a pool. Check previous owners bills first as different costs in different urbanizations. " If you are paying €1,000 for three months water, you must be filling the pool every week! Our bill is generally €45 every couple of months - 200m2 house with pool.
