There might be some posts in other sections of the forum, and you may have heard a bit about this, but thought worth creating a thread to monitor this over the next few days.

But the discussion is a strong chance that the PCR testing post holiday on day 2 is likely to be scrapped for the double jabbed.

This obviously takes away an expense which I’m sure we all would be happy to not have to budget for.

But it’ll be interesting to learn if people are concerned with this. Will a mandatory rapid antigen be a replacement? Does it instil confidence in the vaccine programme we’ve rolled out this year?

So whilst this post is to here what the outcome will be, it’d be great to hear people’s thoughts on this (both sides of the fence).

I personally think its a good move but will still to a lateral flow test for my own peace of mind.

What im not clear on is what changes with the test 48 hours before you return to the UK. Will that still be needed?

I fly to PDI in a couple of weeks so will be interesting to see what gets announced later.

This is a good question. Hopefully we will have an indication of this shortly.

Watching very carefully as we start planning for our trip to PDI.

We are flying out on the 30th and the PCR test will go and so for us it is a matter of timing as the PCR tests must be ordered before you fly out in order to complete return passenger notification form.

If cancelled too late we may still have to order a useless PCR test.

If we leave it too late to order one we may not get the information in time to fill in the form.

just wait and see howe it plays out for the moment I guess

Search the net u can get them as cheap as £29 and if all else fails £40 from nationwide pathology.. it’s not those ones u have to mither about it’s the ones in Spain.. get the cheapest when u get there they can range from 20 euros to 50 euros … good luck … it’s all pretty easy just a little time consuming

We also fly out on the 30th, however I reckon an announcement will be made Thursday regarding day 2 PCR tests. If they scrap them from the 1st October, which is what I think may happen, then we are lucky & won’t need it.

You do not have to book your 2-day PCR test before you travel to Spain you only need the confirmation number for your UK locator form which you fill in before you travel home we booked ours why in Gran Canaria so why don't you leave it to the last minute or until you know one way or the other

This, order confirmation number received immediately online so can be booked through lots of providers on the UK 24hours before your return to the UK, minutes before completing the UK passenger locator form. Really quite straightforward. X

No, once you’ve ordered and paid for your test you will immediately get sent a confirmation email with the code you need for the PLF form. Then your tests will arrive in post ready for your return home

Although it's an added expense we both think it's a good idea. Ours were £43 each which is nothing compared to what we spent on our holiday although I personally feel day 2 is too soon after returning.

The flip side is also that tests are now cheap as the capacity of testing is high and keeps costs low so if routine testing is stopped and if it was suddenly necessary to start testing from a particular country due to variants it may be too late and also testing would be a lot more expensive as capacity and competition would be gone.

It needs tweaking but possibly not abolishing.

My main concerned is that the lft we had done before coming home was not performed correctly and would never have given a positive result. A cynical person might think it's deliberately done that way as the Canarian government don't want to find tourists positive when they are going home anyway.

It’s a very good point and one I was personally waiting to hear.

Always a bone of contention when it comes to a holiday, which typically falls under a luxury as opposed to a necessity. And I suppose the chain of thought is that is you can afford a holiday, then you can afford a PCR test.

Reading the news, it appears that many travellers have been put off with the additional cost and the rate of catching Covid in the UK is higher than people returning from abroad.

Is it now time for the government to support the travel industry and offer PCR (or heavily subsidise it) to travellers?

Or should there be a cap on the cost of these PCR tests?

Reading the rumours and between the lines, it sounds likely that the double jabbed could be taking a LFT and a small proportion of positive cases to then take a PCR. Whether this will be provided or at a cost, I expect we will find out by tomorrow.

Personally, we are double jabbed and test twice a week at this moment in time whilst trying to keep life as normal but as safe as possible. So I think testing is a good idea, and should be continued in a similar manner to how we would do in our day to day lives.

So for us, we would say LFT with a view to a PCR if positive for returning to the UK for countries which get a government thumbs up for visiting as a tourist. And this would be using the channel that is already provided by us, as opposed to a private company providing the service. Public interest then public sector.

Something needs to change as at present it a shambles. We travelled home from Spain last month on a Monday night, did out day 2 test on the tues and didn’t get results back until the Friday evening. All the while we had returned to work and going about our daily business.

We did in fact also do our own lft before returning to work but there is no requirement to do this and not everyone will.

Hopefully we have some clarity soon

So confused by it all

Was going to book the TUI £20 tests last night as both double jabbed

But after the news last night

We decided to wait for a further update

It's not really, it might have taken a week but a new variant has the possibility to spread just as fast as it did in March 2020 and the day 2 test or possibly more useful a day 5 test had the ability to hellp prevent this scenario.

Imagine if everyone coming into the UK in Feb/mar/April 2020 had been tested on arrival .......

I agree nothing should be taken from the NHS budget.

It was more about the government supporting the travel industry, like they have with other industries.

Naturally it made unfortunate sense that travel would be hit, but is now the time to offer some support allow the economy to get some momentum, whilst keeping a safety net.

I am playing the devil’s advocate mind

They’re sure keeping us waiting on this subject. Travel shares are on the up in the meantime.

So anywhere that isn’t on the red list is considered green and clear for travel. No amber list.

There’s no longer a need to take a pre-departure test to travel to England from abroad.

This is from the 4th October.

Then the end of October, fully vaccinated travellers coming from non-red list countries will take a day 2 lateral flow test. No longer a PCR.

Whether this is bought with a cert, or the ones we take from the NHS, I’m not sure just yet.

If you do test positive, then you will need to isolate and take a free confirmatory PCR test, which will be genomically sequenced to help identify new variants.

This is correct. From the 4th October, no need for a pre-test from non-red list countries.

Gov website still hasn’t been updated since the 15th, so once this has been addressed, there should be some further information on the day 2 LFT test.

Gov website states:

“Testing requirements will also be reduced for eligible fully vaccinated travellers, who will no longer need to take a PDT when travelling to England from Monday 4 October 4am.”

I would say no if you land after 4am. And if it’s before, just lurk around in the airport until then.

you need to check with the airline, they enforce it and can refuse boarding. Leave it for a week or so until all their staff are up to speed.

From what I’ve read, Scotland are still going to continue with the test before going home and also the PCR test on day 2.
