We will all know better by tomorrow. The Uk hopefully will let us know what’s happening. We should find out tonight what new laws will be in place when state of alarm ends.

There is definitely more people about (it’s Pride week, even though it’s not really happening. There is still people about)

Some clubs are open, beaches are busy at the weekends not so much.

Check out the website webcamtaxi it has cameras over the Yumbo centre and beaches and gives you an indication of what it's like now in comparison to normality. It's quite shocking really.

Looking at the forums, there are plenty of people who have booked to go. There is still a ban on non essential travel, from UK , so hopefully it will pick up when we are allowed to travel again.

Hi, Did you arrive from the UK ? Did you get questioned by immigration control on the reason of travelling to Spain and if your journey was essential ? Asking as I have flights booked for 29th May and want to know what the situation is like .... thanks

Be prepared to give passport control a good reason for travelling and provide them with proof when you get to the airport. Our son in law works at Birmingham airport and they have a whole list of pre scripted questions and proof requirements for those travelling to amber destinations . He is expecting more passengers to be going back home than those allowed to fly!

Pretty sure Tui wouldn't be travelling and taking holiday makers to destinations if weren't allowed.

The uk has only said they don't advise travelling to Amber they haven't said you can't or have to have a valid reason. As far as we have seen spain mainland have said they dont want travel for holiday from uk but canary Island are allowing it at the moment.

So no reason for us not to go as we are happy to quarantine on our return so won't be needing any excuses or reasons as all legitimate. If the governments of either say different then we won't go or if TUI don't fly because of such reasons.

Thanks for the advice but being law graduates ourselves I'm sure we will be fine. Sure your son needs to double check what the government has actually said about travel and that is advised so no legislation or law not to. Same goes for red list they aren't saying you can't go the difference is you have to stay in a government approved hotel for quarantine.

Thanks x

So why does the gov.uk website say that you should not travel to red or amber list countries for leisure purposes? Rules for green list countries change from 17 May, but the rules for red and amber list countries don’t.

I won’t disagree with your quotes and there is certainly plenty of contradictory information about but at the end if the day the gov.uk website is the official source and even if it ‘advises’ against travel to amber list countries this will almost certainly invalidate your holiday insurance

I agree with you there is a lot of contradictory information about.

When we got off the plane at Heathrow in December our pilot told us we needed to isolate for 14 days. The correct period was 10 days. You'd think someone adiving travellers would know the facts...

And now from BA:

"Six days before the government’s 19-week ban on international travel is lifted, British Airways is warning passengers booked on flights from 17 May that it will still be illegal to go on holiday. The airline has sent out a message to passengers booked on Heathrow-Faro flights next Monday saying: “You can only travel internationally from England for?legally permitted reasons"

The UK government has confirmed it will lift the prohibition on international leisure travel in time for the resumption of holidays abroad on 17 May.

https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/british-airways-ba-travel-ban-b1845376.html

I would imagine that the FCDO's deliberate exclusion of the Canary Islands would suggest the general advice is not applicable in this specific instance.

Of course no harm in checking these things before you fly.

And of course we are hoping that soon the Canaries will be evaluated separately from mainlain Spain in which cases they will be Green by the time people fly back.

Zurich. NOT London.

The Covid/canaries travel insurance policy was taken out in August last year and is in place for 12 months.

As of the 17th it is legal to go on holiday.

We will be in GC 7 weeks today.

Not finished, the insurance is still in force. The policy, with AXA taken out by the Canary Islands currently runs until August 10th. It's quite possible it will be renewed at this point.

Can you point me to where the details of this are I can’t find anything on the Canaries tourism website or from AXA. Just remember guys though that this cover is for Covid only and you will need to purchase ‘against FCO advice’ insurance for the rest of your insurance.

Zurich. NOT London.

Also, current FCDO advice is,

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands but excluding the Canary Islands, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.

The above was taken from the government website, note Canary Islands are NOT included in the non essential travel.

As you keep saying you don't expect travel to happen until October, I wonder why you are concerned?

We have travelled the entire time of the pandemic and are confident in our ability to travel safely whilst abiding by the regulations of the country we are visiting. We are booked and expect to travel in July. Germany and Netherlands have already classified the Canaries as green, separate from Spain and we expect the UK to do this in a couple of weeks time.

In the meantime, making vague and/or incorrect statements regarding insurance and regulations really isn't helping anybody.

From the 17th travel is allowed, quite simply, it's everybody's own choice whether they go to an Amber country, they just have to accept the restrictions of the quarantine on the return and the cost of testing.

Currently, from Monday it says you shouldn't travel, not that you can't. If we weren't allowed to travel to Amber countries, there wouldn't be the testing and quarantine system in place.

The president of the Canary Islands said that it's a possibility that he will allow bars, nightclubs & discos can stay open till 2 am maby in the summer July/August.....

Nothing has been agreed about 2am opening. But it’s more likely to happen than not. They let bars open till 12am on Friday night (got to say, it’s been a big help. For us anyway) the islands have to change things and quickly. They don’t want people having party’s on the beach. So they See opening the bars later and the correct move.

The infections have been in free fall this past 2 weeks now. Hopefully we can see the 2300 live cases by the end of this week. Monday and Tuesday you always see a big drop off due to hospital discharge‘s.

Friday seen, Germany, Holland and Denmark put the islands on the green list. So that’s really going to help out tourism. There is a few hotels due to open this week as well.

So far, so good. Let’s wait on what the Uk government says in 2 weeks time. First Uk flights are due on Thursday

"I think that finished some time ago.

There is an article on the BBC website today about holiday insurance when travelling to amber list countries. It states that ‘generally holiday insurance won’t cover you when travelling to amber list countries, where it is against FCO advice’ which it currently is. I spoke to TUI today and they confirmed this, TUI will provide insurance which does cover you but it is about twice the cost of normal insurance.

So people can get cover at a cost..We all know it will cost more, what with tests etc. Lots of people have saved by not holidaying last year, so hopefully they'll still have that money to spend on their holiday this year.

There is many holiday insurances that cover amber list. That don’t cost must more than normal holiday insurance. Like battleface

Also it’s been Said 100 times so I’ll say it again the FCDO does not say you can’t travel to here.

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands but excluding the Canary Islands, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.

So by the letter of the law, your normal (same price as battleface) holiday insurance will stand as per FCDO advice.

Government advice says travel to amber list countries should only happen for work or for a small number of urgent reasons. However, it is not illegal to take holidays to them and people cannot be punished for doing so.

Asked why it was legal, Johnson’s spokesperson said only: “Amber countries are effectively the default that countries are put in, beyond the small number of green list countries we have, where we have identified it is safe to travel to, and the red list, where we are banning travel because of concerns such as variants.”

Can I get insured if I visit an amber list country?

It depends. If you book a holiday to an amber list country somewhere that the FCDO advises against travelling to, you will not be able to get travel insurance. If you have insurance but your holiday destination changes to amber before departure, your insurance will no longer be valid. It means you won’t be covered if you have an accident abroad, for example, which could be costly. Most holiday providers will refund or allow you to move your holiday if FCDO advises against travel, but not all. If they refuse, you also won’t have valid insurance, so you are faced with either travelling without insurance, or losing the holiday.  Similarly, if a travel agent won’t refund you for an amber list destination and you don’t want to or can’t quarantine when you get home, you could lose the cost of your holiday. This is why it’s important to book with a provider that is flexible if a destination changes from green to amber. If you find insurance for a holiday to a country where the FCDO says it’s safe to travel to, be aware it may not offer complete Covid-19 cover. Most companies do not offer financial cover for all scenarios. For example, the company might pay out if you fall ill with coronavirus while abroad, but not if you’re told to isolate by NHS Test and Trace at the time of travel. Check what the insurance actually provides -Which?

With regard to vaccinations...

During the last week, the Canary Islands Health Service inoculated 110,230 vaccines against Covid-19, a figure that can easily be surpassed this week since the Ministry of Health will have at least 160,000 vaccines at their disposal.

Regarding essential workers, a total of 32,744 people, 49.6% of those who make up this group, have already received their first jab, and it is expected that this will reach 100% during the next week.

Up until Sunday, the Canary Islands Health Service had administered 841,128 doses of vaccines against covid-19, of the 907,380 received, with 276,014 people having already been immunized with either two doses or Janssen single dose vaccine, which represents 14.75% of the target population, made up of 1,871,033 people over 16 years of age in the Canary Islands. In addition, there are 576,661 people who have had at least one dose, which is 30.8% of the target population to be vaccinated.

"theres still a cufew "

Bars, clubs etc have to be closed at midnight but people are free to move about, ie: go to other people's houses but not congregate on the street or in parks.

We waited 45 mins for a taxi at the Yumbo Saturday night and was home after 1AM. Lots of police about but not one of them batted an eye.

"Any up to date news on the vaccine roll out, vivid rates and any new target dates please?!"

Total administered: 971,501 doses.

Immunised: 309,083 people.

Target: 1,348,856 people (70% of adult population)

They are currently doing 50 - 59 year olds and they will be done very quickly with lots of doses available. They have now opened up appointments to anyone over 16.

It is estimated that we will have 70% of target population some time in August.

Also La Provincia have run with a Story about the Uk looking in to green list for us and the Balearics. With the outcome looking good. La Provincia is a news paper that gets most of its information from the government. So unlike the rest it’s normally very good.

The situation is definitely looking very positive for a good summer in GC.

But the two big questions are...

1. Are the beach kiosks open yet?

2. Are the sunbeds and umbrellas back yet?

I am looking at the residents of GC for this information please

Beach shopping list.

1 Groundsheet. You get sheets with attractive patterns on them that you simply lie flat on the sand and then pin down with a few stones. Stones become a sought after commodity.

2. Umbrella. A big one sounds good till the wind picks up and then it becomes a paraglider.

3. Plastic screw in holder which twists into the sand to keep your paraglider grounded so that it does not become a tumbling, impaling weapon.

4. Rucksack that has a carry handle. More about that later.

5. Flip flops. The sand here gets really hot. And while there's nothing sexier than a bottom of someone speed walking over hot sand, it's more fun to watch than experience.

6. Food and drink. Some of the locals arrive later in the afternoon and sell out of cooler boxes but only arrive once there's enough people on the beach. The trick with drinks is... take too few you'll end up thirsty, take too many and you end up carrying heavy drinks back. Have at least one water to wash any sand off can tops lest you have a high fiber drink.

7. Deck chair. You can buy lightweight deck chairs that fold horizontal too. My problem is my legs are too short and the chairs drag in the sand. Two options. You get two wheeled old granny shopping carriers which are challenging to use in sand. Or. If you bought a rucksack with a carry handle you tie the deck chairs to the carry handle and forget they are there. For this I use a velcro strap.

8. Plastic pegs. If you have a deck chair it's more comfortable with a towel. It can get a bit windy and these oversized pegs hold your towel nicely. They also hang things nicely from the umbrella.

9. Sunscreen. For obvious reasons.

10. Wind break. A strip of sheet that stands vertical supported by some poles which you hammer into the ground upwind of where you are situated. You get a groundsheet/windbreak that serves 3 purposes, the third being a bit of privacy.

11. Igloo tent. Providing shade and wind shelter. Point it in the right direction. (See paraglider)

12. Sunglasses. You can buy cheap sunglasses here. Taking your raybans/oakleys/vuarnets to the beach can be an expensive mistake. Some peope wear their sunglasses going into the water and discover nature has an uncanny habit of removing them without your permission.

Many of the items can be found at the lighthouse stalls. The same thing just cheaper can be found in Chinese shops which exist in large numbers here.

What do you do with all these things when you head back home? On your last day find someone newly arrived and pass them on

And whilst it isn't the same as the previous setup, friends tend to group together more easily and it's a lot more social than before...

Our understanding is that ERTE won't be extended, meaning that Spain doesn't really have much choice. It would need to be really bad for Spain to change their mimds. The view seems to be that firstly most of our UK visitors are vaccinated and the the vaccine has thus far proved effective against the Indian variant.

Nothing is certain, but things are looking better than they have for a long time now

Because they are on ERTE and they don’t want to go back to work. Sorry that’s the only reason. Getting paid 70% of their wage and are happy as they can go down the beach and chill. Thankfully 50% on ERTE want to go back to work ASAP, the other 50% don’t

???? Possible new regulations for all of SPAIN.

- Several autonomous communities want to request the use of masks only indoors from July. In this way you could be without face masks anywhere outdoors

- The SPANISH GOVERNMENT and the Ministry of Health are going to propose to the autonomous communities to reopen pubs and discos with a schedule until 2 in the morning or until 3 if the region is at a low level. The clubs would have a capacity of 50% indoors and 100% capacity on terraces. (this meeting is currently happening and could have a confirmation any time soon)

"So they're saying if you have had covid, and recovered and can prove it no other tests are necessary??

Doesn't sound right.. its not a one time thing..

"

That was my thoughts, that's why I questioned what they meant by "convalescent people" ?

From travel canaries website, there are time constraints.

You do not need to test if,

Have an official accredited document that shows that you have been fully vaccinated in the eight months prior to your trip or have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine authorised by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) within the past four months and at least 15 days prior to your trip. The official accredited document of vaccination must state the vaccine received, the number of doses and the date on which each dose was inoculated.

Can prove with an official medical certificate or public document that you have had and recovered from the disease within the past 6 months

Yes but everyone needs to be aware that even though government guidelines are there some accommodation still want it for ssfety.

My accommodation wanted a pcr regardless of the travel laws.

Best to contact hotels individually to get an update on their own policies

If you do fall within all the criteria reference the vaccines, you can download the NHS app (not the travel and trace one) register and tgats where you can access/download official proof.

It has dates, times, batch if vaccines you've had.

It also has a download and print option, with a QR code so it can be scanned...

It's the official/unofficial covid passport if you get the drift...

Look it up, it works.
