Travel ban extended

Whilst I guess not many were expecting to travel soon after May 17th, the Spanish government have today extended the ban on non EU/Schengen entry until the end of May. Usual exceptions apply - residents, etc.

Right so this came off citizens advise this morning. I know it’s been posted all over the place. But it’s not been posted anywhere else other than from citizens advise. Nothing has said by Spain.

It’s even more odd as both Archipelagos said yesterday that they are hoping to see green light tourism in May. That was also backed up by Hugh Elliott only yesterday in the Balearics.

I’m not saying it’s incorrect, but it’s not been on the news or any of the media outlets. Until I see it on c7 or las provincias. Then I’ll believe it.

From a logistics perspective the UK cannot make an announcement on May 17th that travel is allowed with immediate effect and expect airlines to have flights up and running the next day.

The travel industry has been asking for something to work with to help them plan and the government has given them nothing.

I don't know what the government expects to change drastically between now and then that makes them come to a decision.

From the Spanish perspective the state of alarm ends on 9th of May and thereafter entry will be determined by local government. What that will be will be known before the 17th so the ball is in the UKs court, not Spains.

"Spain is planning to welcome tourists from around the world back in June with the help of a digital health passport.

This week at the World Travel & Tourism Council summit in Mexico, Secretary of State for Tourism Fernando Valdés announced that a digital certificate — which has also been referred to as a vaccine passport — would show proof of vaccination, a recent negative COVID-19 test, or recent recovery from the illness to grant access for travelers from overseas"

My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that the autonomous communities do not have control of international borders as it is not their competence. That was an issue locally as the Andorran border was open, even though the Catalan government would have preferred it closed.

Following the ending of the state of alarm internal Spanish borders will be open.

Well fair enough it’s on the BOE. But as above State of alarm ends in under 2 weeks. Then it’s over to us, the islands can do what they like. The BOE just adds confusion.

That’s spot on. Just now central government control all borders in and out. But on the 10th autonomous governments take over border controls

You may be right.

I guess we will know where we stand on 9th of May. But until the UK government makes an announcement and the travel industry has managed to respond to that it's a moot point.

From my understanding it all revolves around the establishment of a Covid Passport system.

So I had a read of the BOE. Yes it’s a ban until the 31st of May. But one in of the Extras their is a review on the 9th of May. Same day as the end of state of alarm. So this is when local government will take over.

That was 3 hours of my life I’ll never get back!

In fairness, it was over 3 months ago Still a good way to end the 10 year stranglhold[sic] and still have more titles than the tics.

Wish we were over there now. It’d be a night of the boxing, and a Sunday watching the old firm derby.

Could we possibly keep the old firm pish out of the Spanish forum please.

Back on ACTUAL topic, I was told yesterday that there are whispers that the state of alarm may possibly be extended but can find absolutely nothing to back it up. I was just wondering if anyone else had heard anything about this? I do hate all the rumour and speculation we get here.

Personally I can’t wait for tourism to come back so we can all get back to work. Over a year sitting on my arse isn’t what I moved over here for.

That’s definitely the hope. A lot of us feel we’re going to be on amber though as we’re such a popular destination and Boris is wanting people

to spend in the UK not abroad. Love or loathe him, it’s not the worst idea he’s had. I how we're wrong, but nobody here would be surprised if that turns out to be the case

Delighted you’re the voice of reason when it comes to a holiday planner. Look forward to the holiday itinerary in another thread to ensure we’re not sad once the travel ban is lifted.

I shall remind all bars once I’m over there to immediately stop displaying such silliness on their screens.

Grant Schapps has said there will be a 'green watch list' which could give 2 weeks notice of a country losing its 'green list status', so hopefully most people won't be stuck, should that happen.

Obviously we wish the best for all holiday destinations that rely on tourism and may it be a successful transition going forward.

Selfishly, we look at the islands being in better shape handling the holiday season during tough times. This was evident during our stay in Gran Can.

We do thank Maclennans, Imagine Bar (now Studio69) and Eden for keeping us updated with the news at a local level. And equally we do thank the PDI lovers such as _amiss and skybluearmy, amongst many others. Great contributions and content that allow us to come to a single point of truth that has helped us shape our decision making on our holidays and when. Even if conversation does go off piste occasionally. Deserved I say.

And I won’t even mention the 4-1 drubbing.

Would that be the same team recognised by all the governing bodies, to be the worlds most successful club in terms of trophies and ROMPED to their 55th (not 1st) league title and are 23 points in front of your team ?

Everybody incl media just talk about flying here, there & everywhere.

Whilst I understand thats how the vast majority of people get abroad, but it would be good for the govt when discussing travel corridors etc to advise those of us who like to drive down to Spain etc & use the overnight ferries to Bilbao etc.

Will we have the same issues as the airports at passpory control, or do we get dealt with like the truckers who are doing regular runs & don't have to quarantine?? Lots of questions need answering, that they don't appear to be considering!

And this

The Times understands that the initial “green” list being published this week by the DfT is unlikely to separate travel to individual islands such as the Canaries from the Spanish mainland because of continuing doubts over the validity of data on infection rates.

However, many of these islands could be included in a second wave of green list destinations released by the government early next month. Ministers will review the list every three weeks.
