Costa Blanca Spain...

Spain is saying it wants to open up to British tourists in June. However it will still depend on which list (green/amber/red) the British government puts it on.

We are driving up to Benidorm later today so will see what changes there are.

Not been since October so quite a few I think.

Costa Blanca Spain...

OK we're back.

Firstly the place is very quiet, even quieter than when we last went in October.

At the British (Levante) end pretty much everything is closed. Hotels, bars, restaurants, the lot. Only an odd gift shop and the Tobacco shop were open.

The square itself is a building site with a huge trench running up the middle (looks like they are putting in new drains) It will be at least a good few weeks before it is up and running again.

Also the Ambassador Playa hotel is having a major refit, including the demolition of the old Western Saloon. All of the other hotels in that area are closed.

On the promenade it was around 50/50 open or closed. Sadly our favourite two (Heartbreak and Daytona) were both closed. The only hotel open on the promenade was the Cimbel.

For bars and restaurants in the old town it was again around 50/50 open or closed but at least Cava Aragonesa was open.

Some of the small hotels in the old town were open but the vast majority were closed.

A few of the shops were closed but plenty open as well, but many seemed to be only until 2.00 pm then not re-opening for the evening.

We did hear a few other British voices but I would guess they would be residents or (like ourselves) people that had driven up from other parts of the Costa Blanca.

As someone who first visited Benidorm over 50 years ago and has watched the place develop (for better or worse) over the years it was quite sad to see.

We just hope the place bounces back and and as many businesses as possible survive, although I fear that some won't.

Thanks for that. I'm going in the middle of June. I'm hoping for a miracle that it will be lively and are able to get there.

Yes Benidorm Lavante/Oldtown is reasonably quiet, they are the tourist areas. No one seems to go much further that. While you were writing your post on here the wife and I were listening to live music (busy} and like the bar next door.

We are are blessed with bars open, Chinese, Indian and British restaurants, open. Many bars cafes and others too until 22.00 Plenty enough for this area of Benidorm that a lot of visitors do not know exits. Some of the "top acts" are coming here as there is not enough work down town. On the whole yes! it is quiet. But the atmosphere is very buoyant here and very optimistic about the future of Benidorm, What, with all the renovation & Newbuild that is going on. please don't predict what you see on a drive through of a very large City.

It does need a club. Having been to it while open, it was in the middle of a Spanish residential area & even for a local very hard to find.

Thought I would put a lighter view on it. We are now going out for fish & chips, after all it is "Fishy Friday.

Kind Regards

LOL. Fishy Friday for us as well

Fish chips and peas for a fiver delivered to your door.

Which part of Benidorm are you in?

We stayed overnight in the Cimbel (Covid price) and went for a meal in Cava Aragonesa.

While it was quiet it wasn't dead and was a very nice atmosphere in there.

Nice hotel, we had a couple of friends stay there about 3 weeks ago (not in scene) said it was expensive??? Enjoy your meal & just to say that's a good price. We're eating in the Rincon area. Fish/chips 4.50 plus b/butter. With a bottle of wine total 15e. One you can say of the area, there is choice and value for money. Take care x

Not 100% sure but the place is a building site and they seem to be building something.

At the moment it's difficult to say exactly what as it's all part of the big refurb of the Ambassador Playa hotel.

I expect it will be a new improved version of the Western Saloon but I could be wrong.
