You don't have to wear them on beaches in the Canaries or Balearic Islands.

We wouldn’t waste our money going anywhere that requires a mask to be worn outside. Having said that it’s going to be some time before we can go to Spain anyway I think so can’t say I am worrying about it at the moment.

Well you're gonna have quite a wait!

Nowhere in the world is back to normal and won't be for a very long time. We will all have to compromise and make the best of what is available and rejoice in the amazing progress that has been made since January 2020.

If it means wearing a mask every now and then I don't fucking care if it means I can have a holiday, have fun and not put other people at risk.

It would put me off visiting a country where face coverings were mandatory outside.

I think it's a pointless measure.

We would because the wearing of a mask is now part of our way of life and we do so to protect others and not ourselfs.

Rules are rules so if you do come over to Spain, until the rules are relaxed you will be required to wear one - failure to do so is costly

Costa Blanca Spain...

How much protection a mask gives is very much open to debate.

However even if it's only a small amount (which is probably true) then every little helps (with apologies to Tesco)

We are in Spain now and have no real problem wearing ours when outdoors or in shops.

As said above, it's the rules so we have to adhere.

we don't have to wear them outside but I wear one outside, in town. I've found older people don't always socially distance, as some don't understand the concept of it, my 91 year old Dad is one of them! I don't want to pass anything on to them, or anyone.

If you are in a place with those rules, then you do have to adhere - no choice or your risk a fine. But most of us will hopefully at some point have the choice of when and where to go on holiday. For many people, us included, whether sensible rules are in place for things like masks will be a key factor in that decision.

Masks almost certainly provide some protection when people are in close proximity and especially in poorly ventilated areas. In an open space with no other people close by, they can do nothing, because there isn't enough virus in the air to need protection.

However, policing common sense rules is difficult because of all the grey areas where judgement is needed as to whether the rule applies.

So a blanket rule is much easier to enforce - and more likely to generate an income from fines.

Hopefully, the poster who said this draconian rule don't apply in the Canaries is correct.

"The spokesman for the Canary Islands Government, Julio Pérez, says that the Canaries understands that the national law published yesterday (Tuesday) in the BOE has the exception that each community regulates the use of the mask according to its own circumstances. "The change in the wording of the law obliges the use of the mask, but attends to exceptions by communities and the Canary Islands have specific norms," ??said Pérez.

He explained at the end of the Governing Council that, the rules on masks in open spaces are maintained as indicated in the BOE published yesterday, although the exceptions of the Canary Islands are maintained, in terms of their use in beaches that prevailed since the summer" - Canarian Weekly

Thanks for the clarification - good to hear from those who are actually there.

What is the situation regarding masks in bars and restaurants (or outside areas of bars and restaurants)?

Officially according to BOC, you have to wear your mask all the time inside and outside, also in restaurants and bars. Whilst sitting on a table and drinking/eating you can take it off, when leaving the table to walk arround or go to toilet, you have to wear your mask again.

Same on beaches, whilst walking arround you have to wear your mask, and ones laying down you can take it off.

I was in playa last September, yes wearing a mask outside wasn’t ideal but if that’s what is required why wouldn’t you do it ? , and to be fair most people did follow the rules , the police out there were hot at fining people not wearing one , and same for bars and restaurants you wear one whist sitting down then mask up to move about , it’s a small price to pay for being out there and helping stop the virus

We agree but wearing a mask outside when you are socially distanced is completely unnecessary. At the moment if we were expected to wear a mask on the beach for example we would rather be here in the UK.

Very well said. Completely agree.

Thailand and Vietnam have dealt with this pandemic very well, maybe the best response in the world, very very low death rates - similar populations as UK and without a decent health service

And they wear face masks a lot? Always have done when they are ill to stop spreading germs to others, just do it a bit more now. They also seem to have stronger ties and relationships with their communities.
