When can we visit Gran Canaria again?

A new thread- as the previous one was full.

Lots of confusing stories in the media at the moment about Covid vaccinations across the EU alongside uncertainty about UK residents’ ability to travel to the EU…

How will this affect our travel plans this year to the fabulous island of Gran Canaria?

Here is a quick catch-up with the situation in The Canary Islands which I hope will be helpful!

At March 24th 238,000 people have received their first dose; 80,000 have received both doses

Gran Canarian President Torres has today reiterated his commitment to reaching a 70% vaccination rate by the end of the summer – which will achieve the level of immunity that will allow the islands to re-open and large numbers of tourists to be welcomed back. That’s the plan anyway!

To reach this target he is relying on a significant increase in the supply of vaccines to the Canaries from April – so that they can make a considerable increase in their daily vaccination rate.

The target figure for the number of vaccinations is around 1.5 million which they are currently 16% along the way to achieving. Let’s keep watching those figures rise

Hi Jay. Exciting times! Just the other day we got 7000 vaccinations done in one day! Proving that when the vaccine is available the willingness a drive is the to get those shots done.

Some of us personally believe that 17th of May will be a significant date in the return to normality. But that's just what we're picking up from the news. ERTE finishes in May and none of us can imagine what will happen if there is no ERTE and no jobs either. So maybe that is the best litmus test.

Our gut feel is that October will start early this year in September and that October will be rammed. But then we've always been optimistic that this nightmare will end eventually...

"The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, reiterated yesterday that the Archipelago is "ready and prepared" to achieve the goal of immunizing 70% of the population against Covid this summer. "If they give us the raw materials we need and the supply of the vaccine arrives, I will advance what is undoubtedly the best news: the Islands will achieve immunity against the virus before the end of the summer," he said.

Torres said that in the remainder of March and April, more than 336,000 doses of Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna will arrive to the islands, and "those of Janssen will soon join aswell," which will allow the Health Service to administer between 25,000 and 30,000 doses a day."

"Hoorah! The Edens! X "

Calima is back but Kiosk 6 was quite busy for a Wednesday. It's really funny because it's the same locals every day. Today there were two tourists and them Germans were calling them "fresh meat" (but in a nice joking way). It's a bit like groundhog day, the same people in the same spots. Because there are no loungers people use rocks to hold down their linen and so they return then next day and they are still there.

Still waiting for a day when someone says "excuse me that's my spot" or "you're using my stone".

Haha! We normally go to old kiosk 8 at PDI, but plonk ourselves back in the dunes, a little way and also like the same spot. I do get a little possessive about my rocks too!!

In the last 24 hours things have moved on fast! Things are definitely starting to look up. Just need to wait and see what the next 2 weeks bring.

There is 800,000 vaccines due in from next week till July. It’s always the same words. 70% of the island vaccinated for full tourism.

Depending on what is said from the Uk. We could be looking at 30/40% of 2019 tourists in May. 50% in June & July. August and as we head to winter season 60%. Then October to March could well see record numbers.

Today winter pride added 3 extra days due to bookings

From GOV UK:

After 6pm (GMT+1) on 30 March 2021 (5pm / GMT in the Canary Islands), while passenger travel from the UK to Spain will resume, entry to Spain will only be granted to those passengers who can demonstrate that their journey is essential.

What is the situation re the Astra Zeneca jab there ? Are people willing to be vaccinated with it ? Sadly if they are not it, I suspect the hoped for dates will not be met. 17 million + AZ jabs so far given here in the Uk, with no problems and great results infection prevention wise. The other vaccines will not be available in sufficient quantities until at least the autumn.

The Spanish government have got their hands on a lot of the Pfizer Vaccine and are expecting the Janssen vaccine too. The Janssen vaccine is a single dose vaccine which has obvious advantages.

Covid-19 in GC is very much a Las Palmas thing. We have over 1400 infections in the Las Palmas municipality (north) and last time I looked 38 known infections in San Bartolome de Tirajana (South) and some of those are illegal immigrants.

When you look at the situation of holidaymakers coming in, you have a case of a low infection rate population being diluted by a population of people who have been vaccinated and/or tested. It isn't the catastrophe waiting to happen that some people are making it out to be.

Yes our leaders are putting out a lot of PR to make the Canaries known to be a safe place to visit, but the fact remains this part of the island has kept a good record of social distancing discipline and our figures refect that.

The main problem here has been getting our hands on any vaccine, but that situation is one that is improving.

The lifeblood of the Canaries is tourism and it's something the Canarian Government takes very seriously. The police have a no nonsense stance and we are going into strict rules for Easter to protect our visitors as much as possible when they arrive in May.

Can't wait to see you guys again!

As an outsider in the UK I am relying on various different media channels for my info and I am definitely getting very positive feelings about the attitude and the focus of the Canarian President, Health Minister and Tourism Minister. This seems to be far more ambitious and creative than the government in mainland Spain.

I hope my Eden friends agree...

Winston Churchill once famously said "Give us the tools and we will do the job".

I think that's pretty much our attitude here. Give us the vaccine and we'll do our level best to make our beautiful Island as safe for our visitors as possible.

As I mentioned earlier ERTE comes to an end in May and we don't have the social housing benefits that are in places like the UK. So if the government doesn't do something urgently a lot of people will end up on the streets. The joke here is that if you get kicked out of your home you find a dinghy and row into Arguineguin and you get put up in a hotel (sorry Canarian humour - just a joke).

Spanish news is full of we just bought millions of this and millions of that but buying it and having it delivered are two different things.

Personally I was at a shipping warehouse today and was shown a stockpile contacting millions of pounds worth of medical equipment (not Covid related - just normal equipment purchased from the UK) standing there since January because of Brexit.

Well Churchill is no more, and Boris is in charge here, and what he and the English Government decide goes, as the Welsh and Scots follows suit.

Thing is , you have Spain saying one thing and EU saying another.

Most in UK won't risk or cannot afford a £5K fine or quarantine.

With UK having to fly over EU countries, commercial risk comes into play for airlines.

Until Boris and Co say we in UK can travel without restriction and until the receiving country or state have the same in place, we are all going to Ourgate...

And until a fixed and firm date is announced by all..Es könnte ratsam sein, in der Zwischenzeit Deutsch zu lernen

Quotes in general are more to do with with the gist of the wise words and not really the cheerleeding of the people who originally said them. In this case particularly apt.

But I wasn't quoting Winston Churchill to a Spaniard. I was quoting him on a predominantly British forum.

Whilst I appreciate you feel need to pounce on everything I say, the forum moderators have asked for this bitchiness to desist and it would be really nice if we could try to behave like adults.

"My Churchill quote was in reference to the Canarians ablility to meet their vaccination targets being dependent on the availability of vaccine.

I think if you mentioned Churchill and his quotes to a Spaniard , they would look at you and wonder , what the hell ?!

Quotes in general are more to do with with the gist of the wise words and not really the cheerleeding of the people who originally said them. In this case particularly apt.

But I wasn't quoting Winston Churchill to a Spaniard. I was quoting him on a predominantly British forum.

Whilst I appreciate you feel need to pounce on everything I say, the forum moderators have asked for this bitchiness to desist and it would be really nice if we could try to behave like adults."

The post was fine in relation to what they were replying to

Can people remember if they are going to post to be civil, if you want to call people out for something they have posted that is totally allowed, but please stay within rules while doing so

Also can others use just the one profile to answer queries about another post they have made on another profile otherwise it looks like it is to deceive people

Thanks

Thanks-very helpful.

Clearly there is an ambitious and realistic plan in place in the Canaries to step up their vaccination programme,

Which is very good news... But unfettered optimism is rarely a good idea, so let's all continue to monitor the numbers!

Interesting wording.....70% vaccinated in Summer, perhaps poor translation and meant to be 70% vaccinated by Summer. Even an optomist would probably say only a chance of some tourism likely in Autumn, certainly not back to normal by then

One thing but, it’s always been the plan. It’s not like Spain have at any point said anything different.

On a side note: We have the jet2 manager who comes in now and then for bingo lol

Bookings are poor in May (but still way more bookings than last year) June & July so so. But august bookings are looking really good. So is the rest of the year.

We just need to see what the Uk government say on the 5th to see what’s happening. I’m way more hopeful than I was even a week ago!

If a person opens a new club DURING a pandemic, there is also a good chance they might genuinely be optimistic.

This is true. We've had a windy time of late and those wind shields are missed more than the loungers I think.

They do sell a chair very similar to a camping chair but it folds flat. They are light and ideal for tanning on.

New high today with just over 10,000 vaccinated in 24 hours. Yes much lower than the Uk. But it’s getting higher and higher everyday. Still only 7% of the population done.

Still too many infections just now everyday. (In and around 200 per day for all the islands)

Let’s see what next week brings us!

"What is the situation re the Astra Zeneca jab there ?

Can't wait to see you guys again!"

We expect we will also have had two jabs by June/july, but thought that getting to PDI might still be an issue. Hence why we are coming over end of Oct as we feel there is a much better chance of it happening.

I think the issue would be that the Government would loosely view that for any type of herd immunity, people would have had to have received both Jabs and given the 10 week interval between Jabs, that extends the date well towards Autumn. There is also risk of vaccine resistant variants being brought into the UK, increasing the risk to those that aren't/won't and can't be vaccinated. Add to that, that there is already talk of booster vaccinations being required by Autumn/Winter, so, unfortunately, there still is no clear and definite path out of things. We remain optimistic for Autumn but that's all it is, optimism

Since we started with the high risk groups first, this means that those yet to have their second jabs going into autumn will be low risk.

Fatality figures have flattened out to 7 day average of 74. Last year this time we were on a sharp increase only peaking in April. By midsummer without the vaccine, infections were so low that the UK was not viable for vaccine testing and South Africa and Brazil were chosen as test populations. This year we go into summer with over 40% having had their first jab, which though not comprehensive is still better than no jab.

It could be argued that if Covid-19 had only ever had had a fatality rate of 74 replacing flu deaths it would hardly have been noticed.

So the only argument against holidays is mutations of the virus which could be equally applied to any other virus.

We will have had two jabs by June !! Fingers crossed, as long as we can guarantee that some restaurants will be open and we will not be Billy no mates we are thinking of coming then !! Need some sun and fun

You guys are coming in October right?

So the BIG question is, if after 3 months of vaccinations the UK have given their first jabs to over 40%, then why wouldn't they have achieved 70% required for herd immunity long before then?

So the only argument against holidays is mutations of the virus which could be equally applied to any other virus."

I think a lot of people focus on the death figures, as opposed to hospitalisation rates and the number seriously ill at any given time, which is actually equally, if not more important. Unfortunately, people are not generally just hospitalised for a couple of days with Covid and can be there for months, so capacity can be exceeded very rapidly. I have a family member who was hospitalised for 3 months and although no longer in hospital, is still far from recovered. Things are headed in the right direction, no doubting that but there are still risks and more importantly, there are still people at risk.....so the balance is holidays vs those still at risk. Nightmare times

"What is the situation re the Astra Zeneca jab there ? Are people willing to be vaccinated with it ? Sadly if they are not it, I suspect the hoped for dates will not be met. 17 million + AZ jabs so far given here in the Uk, with no problems and great results infection prevention wise. The other vaccines will not be available in sufficient quantities until at least the autumn.

That's a fair point.

Fylde Coast.

I’m hoping we’ll have a clearer picture from Boris on the 12th April as to when we can travel abroad and to which countries.

As soon as we get the green light we’re off, be it Spain, Greece, Cyprus?? Like everyone we just need some Sunshine and lots of R&R! It’s been an awfully long winter here in the UK

That could be a bit of a disaster with their current infection rates

Lots of EU countries are saying they will be open to tourism, the problem won't be getting somewhere on holiday, it will be on returning to Britain and possible restrictions that may be in place like being required to quarantine on return. UK medical people are shit scared of new variants arriving that might not be protected from our current vaccines

I agree with that, the problem is you can't maintain that stance so ,they are going to have a grown up conversation about it

Gran Canaria, Altrincham & Portsmouth, north West, South East

1) With covid immunisation passports.

2) Tests within 3 days of departure.

3) Quarantine for 5 days on return with a negative test at day 5.

If a good amount of the population in Gran Canaria is immunisated then it shouldn't be an issue for travel to resume on May 17th.

The newer covid variants have been around for some time now so the government will know exactly how effective the covid jabs are against the newer variants. Prolonging the decision not to allow international travel only confirms that the covid jabs aren't effective against the newer variants but they don't want to compromise the the roll out of the current immunisation program by under mining the public confidence in it. If my predictions are correct then the government will put off international travel until mid to late summer where they will roll out a top up covid jab booster in or around September to protect against the newer variants. Extending the furlough scheme and legal powers given to the government to September also adds weight to my theory.

The government have handled this pandemic abysmally, only choosing to be follow science when it suits them.
