Spain’s tourism minister has insisted that the country will open up for holidaymakers in the spring – despite the prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, warning the frontiers could remain closed until autumn.

On Wednesday the prime minister warned: “Only mass vaccination will open the way to the normality we want.”

He appeared to indicate that the go-ahead to restart international tourism would happen only once 70 per cent of Spain’s population had been vaccinated – and that was expected to be at the end of the main tourism season.

But in a presentation on Friday the tourism minister, Reyes Maroto, insisted the country would open up progressively from the spring.

“Our priority in 2021 is to reactivate tourism and resume safe mobility on a global scale as soon as possible,” she said.

“We hope that at the end of spring and especially during the summer, international travel will resume and travellers will choose Spain as their destination.”

Thanks for that, interesting statements from the Spanish Government, but in spite of their reassurances and commitments it is the numbers that will dictate the policy. That's why I want to monitor the figures in GC - to get the real picture! And will President Torres and the Canarian Government have any autonomy when it comes to opening up their island, do you think?

The way I understood the report was that Sánchez was misinterpreted and that Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto sought to clarify things at the next opportunity. Anyway that's how I understood it.

If Maroto is the one we should listen to then the 70% aspect is mute.

My own personal opinion is that it won't be 69% today, no one can enter, 70% tomorrow everyone can come in. I think they will start off with very strict measures that ease over time as the herd immunity level rises and new case numbers and fatalities drop. Just my guess.

No one knows , they say one thing , Boris says another , will it be Easter , summer , end of summer , will you need to have the jab , do you still have to wear a mask and keep two meters away ? It’s still a wait and see what happens , will the new strains stop all our dreams of getting back to the island

The main problem with tourism opening up might be the supply of vaccines. The EU are furious with AstraVeneca over failing to meet demand with an earlier agreement, and now the EU are saying they could halt vaccine supplies to the UK. I think it was always going to be a problem distributing the amounts needed to vaccinate everyone.

Have a look on the Canarian Weekly. If you look back on previous threads some people have tried to be helpful by quoting from this periodical. However when the Canarian get it wrong the person quoting them is hung drawn and quartered. So it isn't that we are an unhelpful bunch, it's just that when you do try to help with the best of intentions you are shot down for being a know-it-all and held personally responsible for the veracity of news reports.

But as has been said, it's from The Canarian, so may change. I personally think that we are going to have more issues with being a 3rd country and our access limited to countries with lower infection rates.

We have 3 holidays to GC booked for this year, booking direct with Venus, who have been amazing with changes, cancellations etc. We also have flights booked with BA and Swiss, again, both have been excellent with regard to changes. If we have to move dates again, so be it.

Torres emphasizes that the Canary Islands are the community that provides the most aid to companies affected by COVID.

The regional president guarantees the contribution of 165 million euros in direct aid to restaurants, hotels, shops and sports companies, either through European REACT funds -UE or, failing that, with a credit

The Chief Executive remarks that the Archipelago leads the vaccination against the pandemic in Spain (with 105% use of the doses) and that, if deliveries are not delayed, 70% of the population will be immunized this summer

The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, assured today, during the plenary session of the regional Parliament, that his Government is the one that has contributed the most or plans to distribute from all the Spanish communities in aid, direct or through tax deferral, to the subsectors most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to various questions about these support programs, the Chief Executive recalled that, since March 2020 and through the Plan for the Social and Economic Reactivation of the Canary Islands (Plan Reactiva), 95.3 million of direct support were provided to subsectors such as transport, SMEs, freelancers, nightlife and the world of culture.

To this sum are added in 2021 the 400.8 million announced last Friday (January 22) by Torres and the regional vice president, Román Rodríguez. A figure that includes 165 million in direct aid and 235.8 in deferral for 6 months of taxes such as the IGIC.

Torres made it clear that those 165 million in direct transfers to restaurants, hotels, businesses or sports companies (such as gyms) are guaranteed because, if they are not covered with EU funds against COVID (the REACT-EU ), which is the first option of the Canarian Executive, will be done through a bank credit operation.

The president recalled that communities with a greater or similar population than the Canary Islands have contributed much less than those 95.3 and 400.8 million.

As an example, he pointed to the 80 million announced last November by Andalusia, the 30 in the Basque Country or the 17 in Galicia. Torres is clear that no aid will be enough to compensate for the loss of "billions" by the private sector throughout the planet, but he stressed the role played so far by the public, the "effort" made by the Canary Islands and achievements such as that The central government allowed the different administrations to use the surplus when in May 2020 there was a lot of uncertainty on the part of the communities, councils and consistories due to the evident decrease in tax revenues.

“The economy will only recover with vaccination, control of the virus and a return to normality.

Meanwhile, thank goodness there is the public and the private sector itself recognizes the efforts of the regional government, "he said.

For President Torres, one of the keys in the Canary Islands has been to have controlled the pandemic with better indicators than the rest of the country because, otherwise, the damage would have been much greater due to the more restrictive closing times or curfews.

However, he considers it unfair that the 32 million contributed in 2020 are forgotten so that air transport continues to function in the Islands; 9 for maritime, 14.1 for the primary sector; 11 for the self-employed; another 11 for hotel renovation; 6 for culture companies; 3 for nightlife; 1.1 for taxi drivers or 6.5 for other productive areas, as well as emergency aid, housing or school canteens.

In this sense, he believes that the criticisms of some groups that proposed 10 million in aid are dismantled with that global of 495.8 million (95.3 in 2020 and 400.8 now, in 2021).

Despite this, he does not rule out that there will be new extraordinary support programs this year.

"Magnificent" work of the Canary Islands Health Service with vaccination

Regarding the regional vaccination strategy, the president describes as "magnificent" the work carried out by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and highlights that the Islands are the region that leads the percentage of administration and use of doses in Spain, with 105%. In his opinion, and although he deeply regrets each new death, the response to the pandemic in the Canary Islands is proving "exemplary" if the figures are compared, and he argued that arguing the opposite means "distorting reality and losing credibility." "We are trying to get the least number of people to die, but any data leaves our land in the best place," he stressed. “Our planning has been fulfilled and guarantees the second dose. Some days we have gone to an average of 6,000 vaccinations and the protocol has been respected, starting with the users of residences, despite the greater difficulties that this implied in the Islands due to dispersion and because it was necessary to move to those centers.

The president insisted that, if there are no delays in the arrival and distribution of the different vaccines purchased by the EU, the Canary Islands will have immunized 70% of its population this summer “because the team is prepared. For this, the supply of the material is essential and the laboratories must strictly comply with what is agreed with the EU and that there are no third countries that speculate and have more vaccines ”. As he remarked, “protocol must be followed, whoever it is. 20,000 users of residences and 30,000 health or social health workers have already been vaccinated, who now do not go to bed at night with the risk and anxiety of being able to die from this. The next objective is to start with group 3, that of people over 80 years old, which represents about 80,000 in the Archipelago.

Regarding the extension of the extraordinary Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) by the COVID until May 31, which the Council of Ministers approved today, Torres considers this step very relevant, although he insists that the time should be extended that is necessary, "and more in the Canary Islands", given the weight of the tourism sector and services. The president is pleased that most of the requests of the Canary Island Council of Labor Relations have been supported in that agreement between the different parties: central government, unions and employers. In his opinion, without these ERTE there would have been a “bankruptcy” in the Canary Islands, a region to which this tool contributed 1,500 million euros in 2020 alone.

Spring can mean March or it can mean the very end of May!

Summer can even mean the beginning of September!

The OP has asked for numbers and no-one seems able to provide them.

The NHS website tells us that between 8th December and 17th January 3,557,847 people in England received their first vaccination.

Is the same data available for Gran Canaria?

So far 54,300 doses have been administered in the Canary Islands, which are the region that has administered the most doses, with 105.5% of those delivered. These figures have been possible thanks to the use of the vials to obtain a sixth dose of vaccine as indicated in the Pfizer vaccine technical data sheet. Having read the above regarding vaccine rates delivered I got to thinking that there are 2.3 million people who live on the Canary Islands so doing the maths, 54.300 doses of the vaccine delivered which has been done over three weeks since the start, equates to 18,100 weekly so to completely cover the whole of the islands with just one dose will take over two years to complete, that is of course there are no hold ups which seem to be something the main tabloids are talking about.

Makes you think how well the UK has done getting over 6 million doses delivered.

Certainly food for thought.

I would guess by the lack of a reply that no one there knows. If it’s anything like Majorca ( we have friends there) it’s a disaster at the moment. Vaccine supply is almost non existent and even when there is vaccine they don’t seem to have a plan for providing vaccinations in a coordinated way. Non of our friends there know anyone who has been vaccinated yet including local care homes who are apparently highest priority.

Thank god for the NHS!

One time to be grateful that we are in the UK. In our local area all of the over 70s have now been vaccinated and those in their 60s have appointments in the next week or two. Over 50s letters going out next week.

Just had our april 1st trip cancelled. Hope gc get vaccinated soon for the health of our friends who live and work there and for their tourism industry to try and make a recovery. Last few years things were stating to pick up. After covid think it may have damaged a lot of businesses there

After our holiday spike, we have seen a sharp decline in new Covid-19 cases here in GC. We have gone from triple figures down to double figures. There will be a reassessment of restriction levels on Thursday. Vaccination rates are not as good as the UK but still every effort being made to get our vulnerable vaccinated.

Unless something unexpected comes along we think we're headed for a good summer.

We would love to share your optimism for a good summer, but it is going to take one Hell of an effort by the Canarian authorities to even approach the 70% threshold at which herd immunity becomes a reality; whatever their good intentions may be.

Here come the sums...

So far 80,000 have been vaccinated out of a total population of 2.2 million (the only available figures are for the Canaries as a whole)

That is just 3.7%

70% of 2.2 million is 1.5 million. To achieve this figure by say, the beginning of August they would need to vaccinate in the region of 230,000 people a month. Does anyone really think that is possible - based on the rate so far?

Sorry to be a downer but I think Summer in GC can pretty much be written off already.

Sadly I think you are right. Another thing to remember is that the vast majority of those that are going to want to travel during the main July/August are those with school kids, the vast majority of whom will be under 50 and therefore unlikely to have been vaccinated ( either in the UK or Spain). Add to that the additional complications of further variants and booster vaccinations being required and I think the very best outcome is some tourism at the end of the year although I think even that is unlikely

The so called "Kent variant" is already found in many countries (fact) and was probably there before it got its name. Purely because it was first found in Kent. Many other variants are supposedly in Europe

Yes you are right. But the Kent variant was here for months before it became the dominant variant and sparred to spread very quickly. The same thing will almost certainly happen in Spain if they get large numbers of UK visitors and the population isn’t vaccinated.

You have to take into account that the Kent variant is already in Spain and has been for awhile. Approx 20% of cases.

Also allow for the fact that visitors will at the very least, require a neg test 72hrs before arrival.

Pretty sure that the likes of GC will ramp up their vax as they rely so heavily on the tourist. Early summer might be too much of a challenge though, but late summer more likely and certainly Autumn.

The Johnston & Johnston vaccine is due to start being delivered the start of March. There is a full plan ready to go to get everyone over the age of 16 vaccinated and at speed. If there is a spare bit of space anywhere, you will find someone there ready to vaccinate you lol

One of the reasons for the very slow increase in the vaccination rate is the Spanish Government's decision to only approve the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine for people aged under 55.

This is at odds with the UK policy - where data published in The Lancet in February found a single dose was 76 per cent effective in fending off infection between 22 days and 90 days post-injection, rising to 82.4 per cent after a second dose at that stage. This includes people aged 65+

Consequently in Spain millions of doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine are sitting unused, which could have been given to some of the elderly group's most vulnerable to infection.

France and Germany had also imposed similar restrictions on giving this vaccine to the elderly. But Germany are now removing these restrictions after the head of the country’s vaccination committee said his body’s advice to give the Oxford-developed vaccine only to those under 65 had “somehow gone wrong”.

France are also expected to lift the restrictions based on age.

Maybe Spain will eventually follow them? Let's hope so.

The daily vaccination rate has increased slightly and the total is slowly moving towards the target of around 1.25 million over 16s vaccinated...at which time the tourism policies and restrictions will be significantly changed.

That can’t be right surely, if it is I think the Canaries can write off any real tourism this year. Not sure it’s true though as Majorca are still saying they will get 70% vaccinated by summer, despite having only vaccinated just over 2% at the moment.

Personally I think that we can forget going anywhere safely until at least the autumn, if we are lucky

It was reported somewhere that Reyes Maroto is more worried about locals infecting tourists than tourists infecting locals.

There is a lot of data here about how the virus is being spread. Current statistics show 72% are from family gatherings.

If the spread of the virus in GC was down to tourism, there would be a higher incidence of infections in tourist destinations (PDI, Puerto Rico etc). Yet latest figures have Las Palmas at 1785 known cases vs 46 in the San Bartolomé de Tirajana municipality.

Right now the Canaries are fighting complacency brought about by the vaccine. People are starting to act like it's all over. Whenever there is a holiday there are large family gatherings and this is where the problem is. There is talk of all the Islands being put into level 3 and this is to get levels down for tourism. Tourism in 2021...

It isn't over and we all need to be prudent, but the vaccination rate in the UK is something to really be proud of and it's going to open a lot of doors from a tourism perspective.

We would hate to see people cancelling their end of year holidays because of unfounded negativity. The Canarian Weekly has just published an article about Reyes Maroto officially announcing the corridors mentioned earlier.

It looks like May 17 is a date to circle on the calendar.

"The Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, has assured that the scale of vaccination against the coronavirus will greatly increase very soon. She confirmed that the Janssen vaccine is to be approved this week, and that Spain has just purchased a further 5 million Pfizer vaccines.

She pointed out that the scale of vaccination "is optimistic and the Ministry of Health forecasts are on track" with 4 types of vaccines authorized for use from next week.

Currently there are 4.8 million Spaniards innoculated with the first dose, and 1.4 million with both doses, so the minister says we are on target for between 30 and 40% of the population to be vaccinated by the end of April."

That's for all the Islands, the problem was getting the vaccines. When they get enough, the vaccinations going fast.....by the Summer 60/70% of population is vaccinated. When it's like that, maybe we can save the Summer a little bit.

The Problem was always going to be the vaccine lagging. But the ramp up has at last started. I don’t know what the bookings are like for the other islands. We have good bookings from mid May to August. August and past are starting to look very healthy.

If things stay the way it is just now, summer could be good and a fantastic winter season! Winter pride is already started with strong numbers. Long may it Continue.

Let’s see if any of the grants will happen. If they do hopefully more business will keep going till summer. As far too many have sold up.

On 12th March the number of first dose vaccinations have reached 192,000 across all of the islands...this is unquestionably an optimistic sign but still a long way off their target for herd immunity, which is 1.5million (70% of the total population)

The statements that are the most helpful, and which we are following, come from the Canarian Minister of Health, Blas Trujillo (their equivalent of Matt Hancock!).

He is very upbeat about eventually hitting a vaccination rate of 30,000 a day, which would be a massive game changer. He reckons this will be acheived in April with the increased supply of vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and Astra Zeneca, plus the imminent arrival of the new ‘one dose’ Janssen vaccine. If they can achieve these targets then the goal of normal tourism by July looks much more likely.

There are two things to bear in mind:

1) Estimating future vaccination rates with vaccine based on previous vaccination rates with limited vaccine might not be accurate.

2) Yes Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez did say he needed 70% vaccination before he would open the borders. That was dramatic and made headlines on the Monday. By Friday Reyes Maroto the Tourism minister was contradicting him saying that there would need to be a balance between the economy and health safety. Not so dramatic and didn't make healines. Everyone is still quoting the 70% but whether the PM spoke before talking to anyone is debatable.

On Spanish TV the other day they were showing a football stadium which is being used to process 350 people per hour. They have very ambitious targets.

Spain has bought 5 million doses of Pfizer vaccine and approved the Janssen vaccine which is a single dose.

Spain is in a race with Greece to get back tourists. Greece has made it's date the 14th May to attract more tourists. So we can't see Spain holding back once the vaccine arrives.

March 12th, 2021: 7,000 vaccinations in one day in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands have administered 7,038 vaccinations in a single day for the first time, bringing 192,191 doses of the three vaccines available in the European Union to date, 73.16% of the total of 262,700 doses received.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health stated that the immunization of 59,418 people in the Canary Islands have already received the 2nd vaccination, which corresponds to 4.41% of the target population.

On the other hand, the vaccination teams on all islands are continuing the vaccination campaign against COVID-19.

Lots of confusing stories in the media at the moment about Covid vaccinations across the EU alongside uncertainty about UK residents’ ability to travel to the EU…

How will this affect our travel plans this year to the fabulous island of Gran Canaria?

Here is a quick catch-up with the situation in The Canary Islands which I hope will be helpful!

At March 24th 238,000 people have received their first dose; 80,000 have received both doses

Gran Canarian President Torres has today reiterated his commitment to reaching a 70% vaccination rate by the end of the summer – which will achieve the level of immunity that will allow the islands to re-open and large numbers of tourists to be welcomed back. That’s the plan anyway!

To reach this target he is relying on a significant increase in the supply of vaccines to the Canaries from April – so that they can make a considerable increase in their daily vaccination rate.

The target figure for the number of vaccinations is around 1.5 million which they are currently 16% along the way to achieving. Let’s keep watching those figures rise!

Right

Obviously they must have been lying then eh

They are actually Canarian and have lived there all their lives so I think I know who I choose to believe

However if you say the canarian ministry of health have got it covered I will give them a call and reassure them

Well you have the Ministry of Health saying that up till now they been prioritising by risk not age-group. Which means that they haven't started with the 60 - 65 age group as a demographic.

So I'd be more inclined to judge progress once they've actually commenced vaccinations of this group rather than saying they haven't got very far before they've even started.

Obviously the ability of the Canarian Ministry of Health to meet their targets is dependent on doses which have been ordered actually arriving. That's not really in their hands.

One thing for sure is that there is a lot of pressure being applied on the government by the hospitality industry to get the Canaries tourist ready as a matter of urgency.

Given that appointments tend to be at short notice, and given that they only expect to be in full swing next month, it is hardly surprising that the situation is what it is.

The situation here in the Canaries changes on a daily basis and how long you have lived on the island doesn't really count for much. What does make a difference is whether you get your information from official sources or the Facebook rumour mill.

I understand what you are saying and at no time did I say anything different, I was actually stating a fact given to us today by people that live over there and are anxiously waiting for the call to be vaccinated , obviously the ministry of health is telling you one thing but not communicating it to the residents

The skit about friends on the island was totally uncalled for in our opinion

I also live on the island and on an almost daily basis have people over 4000 miles away telling me "how it is".

I also have people insinuating because we supposedly have a "vested interest" in tourism we are lying about "the way it is". Given that our club is not yet open and we have a "vested interest" in tourists coming to the island later rather than sooner. So not only are these claims about our honesty untrue, they follow rather poor logic. And. Totally uncalled for.
