Started new thread in the hope that the usual suspects don’t derail the thread.

Positive news we got our refunds yaaah

It’s not all about the sex , some posters actually like the island the bars beaches and friendly people who holiday there.

The point of this forum was to keep positive and look forward to the normality of getting a few weeks in the sun.

No one , not the Govt or the few expert pent up keyboard warriors on here know what going to happen.

Jan 2020 very few knew of corona

3 months later we are in lockdown

The message is stay positive

3 months is a long time things can and will change. It may not be October but hopefully it will be.

Fingers crossed!

The Canary Islands will receive in July the first flight in the world totally free of coronavirus. This is an experience of the World Tourism Organization in which the Canary Islands Government participates.

The Canary Islands will be the destination of the first coronavirus-free flight thanks to the digital health passport called "Hi + Card and free of COVID-19", a pilot project supported by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and endorsed by the Canary Islands Government that is developing An APP to monitor passengers and that will certify that their carriers do not suffer from the disease.

The Minister of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yaiza Castilla, explained on Sunday morning at Onda Cero that her department works on several lines to offer a destination free of coronavirus and that it involves a security protocol that will monitor tourists from their destination to their tours on the islands. For this, an APP has been developed that will certify that tourists are free of the virus and will be able to spend their holidays in the Canary Islands. The Minister announced that this first flight worldwide will depart from Madrid to a Canary Islands airport.

The first coronavirus-free experimental flight will be made in July from Madrid to a Canary airport. This project of the World Tourism Organization has four other flights whose destinations have not yet been disclosed.

The travelers of this pioneering flight in the world, which will take place next July, will carry a unique digital profile on their mobile phones, where a health entity, accredited by the Ministry of Health, will provide medical information regarding to the coronavirus. Users will request these entities to directly store the information, in encrypted and secure form, in their profiles.

Yaiza Castilla explained that the agreement was materialized after several meetings with UNWTO representatives in which the Canary Islands presented the project in which they are working to recover tourism for the archipelago as soon as possible, and which involves converting the Canary Islands into a world laboratory for redesign of tourist security processes and minimizing any risk in order to transmit health security to tourists. "It is not about turning the Canary Islands into a hospital destination, but tourism for tourists who feel safe on the islands," said the Minister of Tourism.

This is brilliant. I love this 'can do' attitude and am really not surprised that this postive action stems from a people so quick to react to a changing world. Well done GC! I take my hat off to you all and hope our government can learn from you

At the other end of the fight the company I do work for opened a Vaccine production laboratory in 2019 and did vaccine trials earlier thiscyear. I tried to volunteer but they had more than enough volunteers. There is a lot of pessimism around vaccines but our local news is full of exciting news that is very positive indeed.

Think it's going to take more than an app to keep GC safe, and receiving tourism. Hopefully the virus will run its course like so many others. Would not rely on vaccine because all viruses mutate. Question is when the next version appears, and it will, will it be mildly. Hopefully so. It only takes one visitor to infect the whole island. Think the most enlightenment will come from the better understanding, and treatment of infected patients. Hopefully October for us..

Reality check....South Korea, eased restrictions, ONE guy flew to Seoul and went on a night out. 40 confirmed cases on his flight and up to 7,000 to be tested, through contact tracing from his night out in bars/clubs....from ONE guy! People need to wake up to how things will ne until a vaccine is widely in use

No COVID-19 deaths for 5 days in a row in the canaries. If you look on the website you can see all the known infections and where they are. It does not look like you will be able to get on a plane to the canaries unless you can prove you are uninfected.

This means that once COVID-19 has been eliminated from the islands, provided they are strict about the rules, which so far they have been, then swinging in the canaries may end up being safer than doing your weekly shop in the UK

Interesting article in Canarian press, re the Canarian Government's view on Madrid's aim for tourism to widely commence in July....a major sticking point, is that apparently hotels are unwilling to reopen until numbers are sufficient, as to be economically viable, as they will not receive any assistance if they open with low occupancy rates. The Canarian view is some internal tourism over the summer with the possibility of International tourism October/November, IF the countries of departure meet their standards re precautions/prevention. Still muddled but obvious not all countries will be granted an immediate return to the Islands. Certainly plenty of debate ongoing between the jurisdictions

Alok Sharma, the Business Secretary, said on Sunday that the clinical trial at the University of Oxford is progressing well and, if it proves successful, the doses could be ready by the end of the summer"

We do not take much notice of media reports as found they tend to manipulate what has been released by governments or are just speculating.

We have booked to return to GC in January 2021 and hoping to be out there the end of October. We are taking each day as it comes and are positive that we will be able to visit then, even if social distancing is in place.

TUI sent us an email explaining hotels are considering opening to half capacity, buffet will be replaced with waitress service, furniture in communal areas will be spaced out and restrictions will be put in place around the pool. This would suit us as we just want to go out to see our friends and soak up the atmosphere in the bars. We are beach people so pools being closed would not affect us.

Fingers crossed we will still get a holiday of sorts xxx
