Angel Victor Torres, Canary Islands' president, told local press in an official statement: "The Canary Islands were the first to have coronavirus in Spain and now we want to be the first out of confinement."

Torres went on to confirm that the reinstigation of international tourism would follow a three-phase plan.

Residents of the Canary Islands will take first priority, with movement of locals being reintroduced first. The second phase will see Spaniards from the country's mainland able to visit the Canary Islands. Finally, holidaymakers from abroad will once again be able to access the islands.

Torres continued: "That way, in October, November or December, which are good months in the Canary Islands, we can begin to receive tourists from other countries."

Unfortunately they have no say, it's down to Spain, whether GC can open up for tourism.....but they can ask nicely

That sounds reasonable. whether we'll be allowed to travel from UK will be the thing. I'm still nervous about travelling, airports, planes etc Will wait and see what happens in the next few months

The expert committee agrees on the de-escalation proposal that will be presented this coming Sunday to Pedro Sánchez

CANARY ISLANDS - DECONFINATION - CORONAVIRUS - COVID-19

The committee of experts from the Canary Islands, meeting during the afternoon / evening of this past Wednesday, has decided to agree on the proposal for partial de-escalation that will be presented to the central government during the telematic meeting that Ángel Víctor Torres will hold this Sunday with Pedro Sanchez and the different autonomous presidents. This is a package of measures called to apply from next week and which has been able to confirm TIME OF THE CANARY ISLANDS.

In principle, the proposal brings together departures on even days for those who live in even numbers, and on odd days for those who live in odd numbers. All this with a maximum of three people together or family nucleus that coexists together. The initial idea is that four phases are carried out with one week for each of them. Regarding children under 14, they can leave from 16:00 to 19:00. In the first phase they will not be able to go to the parks, something that will be dealt with over time. In addition, the elderly can leave from 11:00 to 13:00 and you can go to second homes for animal care or orchards, but always on individual trips.

Gyms can be opened from the second week, but with limited capacity, like hotels, which can also open, but with 50% capacity

In order to practice sports, it will be easier to exercise outside from 05:00 to 09:00 or from 20:00 to 23:00, allowing you to walk up to a distance of no more than 2 kilometers from your home and run a maximum of 4 kilometers from home. It should be noted that the use of the mask will be mandatory to access closed spaces. In addition, gyms can be opened from the second week, but with limited capacity, like hotels, which may also open, but with a capacity of 50%. Public events with more than 50 people are ruled out, while funeral homes extend to 10 family members.

The forecast is that small businesses also reopen their doors from the first week, but always controlling the number of people they receive, like hairdressers, to which they can go, but with masks and protection. As for shopping centers, they may be available again from the second week, which will also happen with the beaches.

The activities are distributed as follows:

Hairdressers: first week with masks.

Hiking: maximum one hour from home.

Beaches: second week to consider. Third and fourth week yes. Maximum one hour from home and keeping distance.

Cinemas and theaters: less than 50 people or 1/3 of the capacity. Rows and separate seats.

Restaurants: last 2 weeks. 50% capacity. With reservation and or more than 4 people.

Later, it is also planned to allow outsiders to arrive after giving a negative PCR result at the exit from their place of origin. If you do not have it, you will be confined for 14 days. Thus, in this way, the unconfinement proposal that will be transferred to Pedro Sánchez this Sunday to begin the de-escalation from next week in the Canary Islands, which continues as one of the regions least affected by the coronavirus within the entire nation.

Don’t even think about travel to the Canary Islands till the end of the year.... maybe on Fall. It’s not only about restrictions from the Spanish Govt. it’s airlines and air traffic administration restrictions as well. I’m not sure if touristic companies will save their business with local tourism in summer and foreigners in fall.

We have a very controlled area here in the islands.... low rate of new infections and no deceased for days, even weeks in some islands .. We hope we’ll be back to a kind of normal life soon.... but no travels and no visitors for months.... Stay safe, fabs!!!

The Canary Islands president hopes that international flights to the Canary Islands will resume in August and increase in September and October.

Testing in the Canary Islands has been ramped-up to make sure the islands can move through the phases of Spain's opening up plan as fast as is safe.

It seems that the lack of tourists isn't all bad.

Now who wants to get their footprints in first?

Perhaps the penny will drop with those that predicted normality by the end of April.....then June. So it's officially 'hoped' that tourism can begin in September but a) not all airlines will be flying and nowhere near at capacity and b) a significant number of people are likely not to want to travel..... and that's only getting people there....it will be nothing like normality for a long time, the airlines are predicting 2-3 years

This

Don't hold your breath on the penny dropping though.

Like many we missed out on April, won't be going on our October visit and can only keep fingers crossed that we "might" just might be able to visit next April.

Looking forward to our first walk together from home for 8 weeks tomorrow. We can see the beach from the house, so that's where we'll be walking. Just 4 active virus cases left in Fuerteventura now.

It sounds like Estate agents always talking the housing market up regardless of facts on the ground.Forget tourism for the whole period of this year and hope it might very slowly recover sometime next year . I think half the population of Europe have turned into total neurotics over this virus courtesy of the media and won’t be getting on planes ,staying in Hotels or going to bars and restaurants for years .

Exactly. Locals and people staying longer term. Holidday makers are a good part of trade in certain areas, but definitely not all. In our local bar some of the old Majorero men gather to play dominoes loudly and drink Tropical!

You are very correct and hopefully it will stay that way with infections, but everyone seems to be focusing on foreign visitors coming back to spread the virus again but the one thing that does not get mentioned is the biggest threat to Fuerteventura and Canarias will come from within! You are goverend by Spain and when restrictions to travel are lifted and that will be before anyone from any other country sets foot in the canaries, mainland Spain will be your first customers and it did not go very well there and is still a concern even the crowds that were all out at the weekend when restrictions were lifted was worrying, but they will flock to canaries and as you say the virus has been contained but they will see less chance of catching it there but unfortunately more chance of them carrying it to canaries, what are your thoughts or worries on that especially as Spain basically tells you what to do....

I think the residents of the Canaries need to stop looking inwards and think long and hard about the consequences of opening the islands up too early.....a second total lockdown would be far more costly than a continuation of the current one, albeit slightly relaxed over the initial restrictions

Think I prefer Sweden's way of thinking. Life Carrie's on. It may seem more costly at the start, but 12 months on, Most of the country will be immune. This virus will never fully leave us. I would rather meet it head on.
