Exercising dogs

Is everyone still taking their dogs out as normal or have you changed your habits? Usually where I go there’s not many other dogs but the past few nights has been a lot busier. Seems parks, football pitches and fields have way more dog walkers in them where I stay which is a pain as my dog isn’t great around other dogs.

My dogs are a big part of my life and get walked 3x a day. Luckily they are fine with other dogs but i do tend to go to places where nobody is around so that will not change.

Well mine get 3. I drive 3mins in my car and walk for around 40mins a time and do not see a soul. I would say one visit to a supermarket would be more risky.

This is true. Irrationally get the fear when going to the shop. Outside walks far safer all round

I'd gather bluebells dog walks are absolutely necessary, just like many dog owners.

So by government rules / advice she is entitled to walk them more than once. From what I see she is sensible about it.

Every where is busy when walking the dogo

never seen do many people out walking. Even at 6:00 in the morning.....

Used to like the solitude of the early morning dog walk . Cold fresh air around the man bits .....

3 times or 300 times if your dogs need out then they get out . the rules say excersice once a day for humans it does not say for how long be it 3 minutes or 3 hours it is still only once , now if you split an hour in to 3 you get 20 mins more than enough time to do what ever.

as long when you are out you keep your and your dogs distance

Just a background character

I'm sure peoples dogs will forget a few weeks of inconvenience of only getting out for the toilet if it helps save some lives.

And sticking to the rules might prevent a total lockdown like Spain, since the flouting of advice means we get clamped down on more and more, or has no one noticed what is going on

It's the unnecessary journeys - driving to a place to do something else - that will lead to total lockdown

I kind of agree, you should only have the dogs out just once a day while you are having your daily excerise. If they shit in the house they shit in the house , put down a sheet of plastic. If cleaning up your own dog shit is the price you pay to save even 1 life then it's a small price to pay. Lock down is for a reason not a thing where we can say , I'm exempt because I have a dog. Try getting the message no one person is exempt from this.

Did you explain to him you would be going out 3 or so times a day to walk a dog ?

It's selfish and stupid to leave the house multiple times so a dog can have a shit. I had dogs for years, they can hold it in just like humans can.

But you would rather risk spreading a virus and killing people.

Good for you too.

People still not getting it, people like yourself that think they know best. The longer the rules are flouted the longer this will last.

It's a moot argument anyway given that in Spain and Italy dog walking is allowed. Albeit italy has distance restrictions.

Ive also seen nothing in the UK that says it isn't.

As long as dog walkers exercise social distancing they have nothing to worry about.

You said a 5 minute journey, that means your traveling by car, that means you need fuel, that means petrol station visits , that means its public places. Everything has knock on effects. Your multiple car journeys are not a necessity, your selfishness won't allow you to change in these harsh times.

Deaths will not be avoided as so many shops still open, public transport still running and thousand still working. You can not seriously be blaming a walk down the empty woods for deaths.

People are grassing up their neighbours for going out twice or more in a day wanting them cautioned.

The local authorities have been inundated in Englandshire already with folk demanding others are cautioned.

I’m glad there is a many miles between some posters on here and myself.

Perhaps they're grassing on them in the hope they stick to the rules rather than hoping they'll be cautioned.

I grew tired of the don't be a snitch/grass culture once I became an adult, but each to their own. Fair enough - I know people who break the law, and mostly I don't/won't go telling on them, but this is different. This isn't Jock doing homers and cheating the taxman. It's not Jimmy selling to make a few extra bucks to spend on his Mrs hair extensions. This is fucking life or death. Break these rules and you could end up unwittingly being responsible for killing yer Granny, someone's child, or the very people you stood at your door applauding the other night. Either that doesn't sink in with a lot of people, or they're just selfish bastards.

Right now I'd have no issue grassing on someone - risking being called a snitch in the process, if I thought it could prevent one person dying - never mind thousands.

Each to their own, though.

Someone takes their dog a lonely walk around block 3 times a day for 1 hour. 20 mins a walk.

Someone takes their dog a lonely walk for an hour.

The staggered owners and dogs are savvy.

The 1 hour is bordering on cruelty esp if you don’t have a garden.

How would leaving the house, putting the dog in the car, going to a field 2/3 mins away, walking the dog round the field coming straight home. How would that kill children and my granny?

The fields are a bit busier but I’m never even 100metres from someone as my dog would attack other dogs. I was actually the only person there this morning

Well i have just left work and was going to pop into Asda but it was mobbed at 0810. I turned away. To me the 100s of people in that shop who were all in close contact are far more guilty of putting folk at risk than us lone dog walkers.

Exactly bluebell. People will do things to suit their own lives yet try and quote the rules when it comes to others.

Walking up and down aisles it’s impossible to stay 2 metres apart but that’s ok. Walk your dog 500metres from someone else, you’re going to jail

"Well i have just left work and was going to pop into Asda but it was mobbed at 0810.

Walk your dog 500metres from someone else, you’re going to jail "

People are still allowed out to buy food

And it's really not impossible to maintain a distance from folk when shops are less busy

"People are grassing up their neighbours for going out twice or more in a day wanting them cautioned.

How would leaving the house, putting the dog in the car, going to a field 2/3 mins away, walking the dog round the field coming straight home. How would that kill children and my granny?

The fields are a bit busier but I’m never even 100metres from someone as my dog would attack other dogs. I was actually the only person there this morning "

Another driver taking his dog to the field crashes into your car. You're out cold so said driver tries to help you, because human nature tells him to. Two passers-by stop to assist also. You have coronavirus. You've passed it onto three more people. One is your brother who was delivering some shopping to your Granny, the other is a carer for a child with underlying health issues. You're taken to hospital by emergency services. You're in a bad way. You get an intensive care bed. Your Granny doesn't get one a few days later because the NHS is overwhelmed, and she's old. She dies. As does the child with underlying health issues when it's mother unwittingly passes it the virus.

The two vehicles are blocking the road to the local supermarket, so a recovery vehicle comes to tow them away. These guys don't take coronavirus seriously. They make their own rules. They contract the virus from your car and spread it to their friends and family. Their friends and family make their own rules up, and celebrate wee Senga's birthday with a party, because it's cruel not to.

A week later your town is obliterated by covid-19. All because you didn't follow the rules.

A bit far-fetched? Possibly. Possible? Probably.

It's still breaking rules, I love animals and think dogs should be walked often but we are all nation/world wide being asked to abide by rules, one breaks rules, then another, then another and before you know it others are following suit.

Thats why they bringing in more and more steps to reduce social distancing because people are not listening. People have been warned stay at home, dog walk once a day, we are all having to stay safe. If you don't, people might end up sick, too sick to walk their dog once a day let alone 3 times.

Simples rules thats if adults dont adhere to then how do we expect their kids to.

Lovely morning actually.

Let's see how many non dog owners stick to the rules today.

Imagine lacking the foresight in not buying a dog to get out more than once a day during pandemics

Let me sum it up best I can, I have a funeral coming up to which I would really have wanted to be at, ( not covid related), but it's now immediate family only. Because of current rules I can no longer pay my last respects to this person nor the family which is devastating to all concerned. To all the selfish idiots who break the rules for their dogs to have a regular shit I salute you. Let's all just pick and choose which rules we think are fair and which are unfair to us and our fucking dogs and go on and do what we like. Then I can assure you, covid 19 will eventually be at your door or someone very close to you. Then you can break a few more rules and take your fucking dogs to that persons funeral too.

That's such a shot situation to be be in. Thoughts go out to you.

But funerals are packed places and taking a dog a walk, alone, is the complete opposite of that I'm afraid.

Nobody can ever catch covid 19 by walking a dog in the empty woods. Large gatherings at funerals is another story. If i catch covid 19 it is because i am in very close contact with humans who i am nursing while some of you wrap yourselves up in cotton wool and moan. Now excuse me i have dogs to walk.

I've got a funeral through Facebook on Monday. Not really how I wanted to pay my respects.

But also not something you can compare to walking dogs in remote areas x

Blue, I'm completely healthy so not in the at risk category but I have to follow the rules just like everyone else including you. Drive safe when you take your dogs out and don't have any bumps that will cause unnecessary interactions , let's hope when refuelling there is no spread due to your extra unnecessary journeys.

were quite lucky we have a big garden and theres 4 of us in this house so if our dogs needed out several times a day then it wouldnt be a problem for them to get walked, some peoplelive alone and are still out working as well because they are essential or key workers and these animals are being left indoors allvday on their own, to me its just not right and the dogs should be able to at least go out and get exercise and spend quality time with their humans before they have to go to sleep and get back up again to go out and work again putting themselves at risk every day looking after the rest of us

We should be learning by what has and is happening in other countries. Learn by their mistakes, their ignorance etc... We are in the brink of emergancy and are for now being asked to abide by the rules. Do so before it becomes the bloody law and it won't be for 3 weeks or 3 months. If full lockdown happen, it's 6 months we have to continue this.

So let's just not be ignorant.

Not sure how many are aware that animals are now also at risk, it was said they only carried the virus now they can contract it to. Check out the news. So keep yourself, your family pet and your family safe. How hard can it be to just follow a simple set of rules to save lives.

Rules for all not just some, 1 hour walk once a day, prevent going out often only for necessities, it's not cruel it to reduce people dying.

Especially this weekend is the peak so all advised to stay indoors at all costs.

Advice for pet owners and livestock keepers on maintaining the welfare of their animals during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Published 27 March 2020

From:Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and Animal and Plant Health Agency

ContentsDogsGeneral advice for all cat ownersHorses, livestock and other animals

We all need to do what we can to reduce the spread of coronavirus. The single most important action we can all take in fighting coronavirus is to stay at home in order to protect the NHS and save lives.

You should follow the current guidance and must stay at home, except for very limited purposes.

The following advice provides further detail for pet owners and livestock keepers on maintaining the welfare of their animals during the coronavirus pandemic.

There is no evidence of coronavirus circulating in pets or other animals in the UK and there is nothing to suggest animals may transmit the disease to humans. In line with the general advice on fighting coronavirus, you should wash your hands regularly, including before and after contact with animals.

DogsAdvice if you have symptoms of coronavirus and must remain at home for 7 days, or 14 days as a household

If your dog cannot exercise at home, you should ask someone outside of your household to walk your dog for you.

All non-essential trips to vets should be avoided. If your pet needs urgent treatment, you must phone the vet to arrange the best approach to meet your pets’ needs.

Advice if you do not have symptoms of coronavirus

You may leave your house to exercise once a day and you should combine this with walking your dog. In doing so, it is important that you minimise the time spent outside of the home and remain 2 metres away from anyone outside of your household.

All non-essential trips to vets should be avoided. If your pet needs urgent treatment, you may take them, but must remember to wash your hands and remain 2 metres away from anyone outside your household. You must call the vet before going to see them.

Advice for those walking dogs on behalf of someone not able to

You may also leave your house to provide care or help a vulnerable person. This includes walking a dog for someone who is unable to leave their house because they are self isolating or being shielded. You should remember to wash your hands before and after handling the dog and keep 2 metres away from other people and animals, including when handing over the dog to the owner.

Just a background character

If people working in the health sector can't set an example by following the rules in these circumstances they are probably in the wrong job.

General advice for all cat owners

You should wash your hands before and after any contact with your cat.

Always wash my hands after touching our moggy....though she's probably cleaner than 80% of the folk on here!"

There was no evidence of pets contracting it but now there is. Thats obviously not been updated so keep eye out for it being updated. It was on the news half hour ago.

The thing is no one knows how and who will get it says only elderly and those immune compromised yet thats been proven to not be case.

Just everyone keep safe and that assures your family, pets and others are safe too

"We should be learning by what has and is happening in other countries.

And don't forget....only buy what you need so the shelves stay stocked for others"

Just so you know we did go out to do our monthly. We bought meat from our butcher , butcher was stocked and no other customers going in which was a shame as so much will be wasted, went to tesco saw the queues and got back in car, went to poundstretchers, b&m, home bargains, aldis getting little that wee needed for 4 weeks, all where stocked right up with loo roll and soaps shampoos, some with veggies, tatties. Didnt empty any shelves plus state your normal shop never got question as never stocked oiled, we have been out now no need to go out to shops for next 4 weeks unless to pick up milk and bread. Plus bought more veggie seeds to plant something fun for wee kiddies to do aswell.

So anyone want butcher meat stevie broon in East Kilbride has alot and alot will go to waste

"6 shops isn't really cutting your footfall "

But unlike other walking about we had gloves and face masks on. They are on minute we walked out the door even in the car . So think 6 places in one day protected rather than a daily or weekly trip to shop not protected is completely different.

"One walk a day not whenever it feels like having a shit, or fancies walkies for the 3rd time"

I’m classed as a key worker and out and about all day. I fill up with diesel regardless if I take my dog a mile from the house or not. So basically I’m already in danger with people not being responsible but what I do with my dog I’m less likely to spread anything as a walk round the block will lead me to bump into people going to and from the shops, joggers etc

Sorry to hear about your situation however it has no relevance to someone walking a dog in isolation.

Took my dog a walk this am and took a shopping bag as well and got some shopping to tide me over till my delivery comes Monday, never saw a soul but it was 7am lol.

My son will take the dog out again later (just round the block early evening) and he will get taken down to garden twice in between.

Means we’ve all had a bit fresh air.

The "Health Protection (Coronavirus) (Restrictions) (Scotland) Regulations 2020" says that you can leave the house to get food and exercise. It doesn't say anything about how many times a day or what kind of exercise or with or without a dog.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ssi/2020/103/made

There is NOTHING in the emergency legislation that says you can only go out once.

Theres a common sense element to this.if your dog needs out it needs out.as long as your keeping a social distance and not driving to the other side of the country ,then surely no harm done.even better if there's a quiet spot near by.

A Telegraph survey once reported three out of 10 crashes happened less than a mile from home.

People should stick to the rules to prevent even more stringent lockdown measures being imposed.

Might as well be telling this to the dogs in some cases

https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others-social-distancing/

Staying at home

You should only leave the house for very limited purposes, for example:

for basic necessities, such as food and medicine. Trips must be as infrequent as possible

daily exercise, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household

to ensure basic animal welfare needs are met, including taking dogs out when necessary

any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person

travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home

These reasons are exceptions - even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

These measures must be followed by everyone.

****

Formatting isn't great on a copy and paste, but there's the *actual* rules - infrequent exceptions to staying at home, for as short a period as possible.

Without a total and utter lockdown where we need to register a reason to be outside and be able to prove it, we need to be adult enough to use judgement.

Exactly

Now let’s deal with common sense.

Have you seen common sense?

Common sense has been missing for several weeks.

If you have seen common sense please inform the police.

Meanwhile normal people have issued this emotional plea; "We miss you common sense. Please come back."

I have, actually. Maybe we're just more compliant here, but I've not seen any groups congregating, no kids out, unless walking with parents, shopping queues managed and controlled and no one panic buying. All unnecessary shops closed.

Although I did take a marginally longer route home from the supermarket yesterday to check out the high street. You can report me to the police if you like

Rather than try to avoid breaking legislation, and therefore getting into trouble, I think I'll follow guidance from, let's say, the NHS, minimise certain activities, and try to stop the world getting deeper into trouble.

It's legal to shoot a Scotsman in York with a crossbow Monday to Saturday, but wise folk wouldn't go there.

Those who are not following the rules. Let's just be as bad as the other counties where people are dropping like flies in the thousands because they didn't following simple rules that even some kids are adhering too and understand instead of questioning absolutely everything. What harm will it do to stay at home and keep safe for few weeks to few months.

We should be setting an example as being at least one country that can actually prevent the spread and reduce deaths. Working together not fighting each other.

Follow the rules before it's a law (martial law) and we can get back to normal once we have reduce the spread.

We are being asked to save lives.

If people refuse to listen expect it to be longer than 6 months before we can go back to normality and more and more people suffer with loss of earning, out of work, companies shutting down. Its not just saving lives which is by far more important but saving companies who employ you. Its a big knock in effect.

"Think a few people have watched to much Netflix over the past few days haha.

I have a dog and 2 funerals that i cannot attend . Drives me nuts . Dogs out in my garden only . Wont even risk being out with her for walks . So im with you . Its only fair to be responsible cos way its going they going to be right pissed off when it is total lockdown . Folks just aint thinking . My kids an i ohh an ma dug . Have had to be in isolation for just over 2 weeks . So i know it can and will be hard and most only on first week . But ffs get your selfs infucking side or you are going to be keeping everyone in and if we are going on lockdown they looking at september as earliest . Then your going to have to have written permission to walk said dog or dogs and a limited time . So change your habbits now and stop using the bloody dogs walking as an excuse to be out as many times as you like .

Yeah i dont mind the haters hating but really your adults ffs start acting like it . Keep yourselves and your family safe . Stay in cos yip you can, will and probaby have some form of it to spread . You may be a carrier of it . Do you know ??? Have you been tested ?? No so fucking stay home . Simples if my 15 yr old twins can bloody stay home and safe (no arguing about it) that alone is a miracle . They have more common sense than alot on here right now. I think even the dog gets it cos shes got us all home every day all day . So you wise up and your dog will too.

This is it precisely, poor kids get 1 venture out for excerise per day but people think their dogs are entitled to normal walkies behaviours. Selfish and irresponsible pure and simple.

I have never seen so many dog walkers out since this all started, nice to see the poo being bagged then thrown into the trees and bushes,

We ALL need to make changes in these exceptional times . Anyone who thinks they can just carry on doing what they want when and how they want are selfish and deluded.

They have clearly said ESSENTIAL travel only . So it really is simple

Is your journey vital ... if you answer yes then ASK YOURSELF AGAIN! If it's just your preference and makes life easier for you then I'm afraid its not vital.

Is there ABSOLUTELY no other option??

If people put as much effort in to finding different solutions or ways of working things as they did making excuses and justifications they'd soon find a multitude of solutions !!!

Adapt now or there Will be further crack downs on those who refuse to listen and you will be forced to comply.

Why would you drive for 3 minutes & to do a 40 minute walk.

Don't travel unless necessary add the 3 minutes to the walk

But if you live in a town or city, then just be sensible about being in public areas

I think what is happening with dog walkers is if they all think they should walk their dogs 2/3 times a day that social distancing could become more an issues as more and more people will start to do the same.

We are meant to be reducing the time going out, "stay home and stay safe" has been asked of us. If some aren't listening to rules then other will stop listening and then more people will be going out.

Its the same as if most are staying home then others will follow suit.

People can't have the view that everyone is going to get it anyway, if that happens then those poor drs nurses thats everyone clapped for the other night will be run to ground with people getting ill and needing medical help, they have families too and they are pleading for everyone to stay at home .

A bit hypocritical for all to be clapping in support of NHS workers then ignoring their plea.

Not directed at you bluebell, was just in general to all.

Like everyone we all want things to phase out and that's means we all get back to normal but that will happen if everyone doing reducing and changing their lives. It's just how it is or thibgs could go on for 6 months. Bugger being grounded for 6 months.

So think rather everyone change their ways for short period of time rather than a longer time.

Well there are some sweeping statements on here and as with the argument about the schools closing it’s not black and white. NHS staff are being actively discouraged from using public transport to get to and from work so I’m walking most days sometimes both ways (it’s about 1hr 30mins walk each way) so I’ve given up my 3 times a week runs to counter that, but I cannot take the dog to and from work so I have to take him out, I have a garden so sometimes it’s just a walk round the block sometimes it’s just a quick toilet trip to garden. He’s not a big dog so a few longer walks a week does him, that’s usually the night That coincides with me getting a bus home from work.

Last Sunday I took him a long walk up canal and park was full of students/young folk drinking and having picnics because it was sunny, today went same way at around same time and there was a dude cutting across on his bike and a couple walking a toddler, I met 3 or 4 dog walkers/joggers on canal but we all gave one another a wide berth

Really not trying to be a bell end, my gripe is with all the unnecessary travel and walks and days out that I have a serious issue with. Your travel is essential whether by walking or commuting.

The advice everywhere is out for excerise once a day, and to combine that with dog walking , now unless the dog is out walking itself then you are breaching the rules. .gov if you would like to read for yourself or you could read my copy and paste above . Either way read and heed .

I asked for a link to the specific law pertaining to once a day ? You haven’t provided that because there is none.

Here's what Boris said

"Walking dogs as part of yours and their one daily exercise is allowed during the lockdown" .

Walking your dog in quiet areas is unlikely to spread the virus.

That's what he quoted on 23rd when partial lockdown was announced. So your daily exercise is to include dog walking. Not both. And he did say walking in quiet areas so not built up areas is unlikely to cause spread.

No you asked for a link to the rules/ law

.gov has the RULES you know and I know there is no law, but the RULES are being enforced By law enforcement and through fines.

If my dogs were walking alone then they would be hit by cars possibly causing injuries to driver. He would therefore maybe need medical treatment requiring paramedics and hospital staff. The dog warden would also be involved and then also the vets and maybe passer bys who stopped to help. Much easier for one person to walk the dog sensibly you must agree so please kerp your hair on and stop calling us fuckwits as you just come out looking like a total plonker.
