This is my first time posting in the Scotland forum so be nice to me or I’ll beat you all with my rubber truncheon!!!......

So, Boris Johnson has proposed plans to build a £50 million bridge from Scotland to Northern Ireland...

would you use it?

Do you think it’s viable?

Is it a good use of rate payers money?

Sounds simple... but there's a few problems. Notably the shitty road infrastructure in the west of Scotland, especially on the peninsulas which would create the shortest connecting distance. I regularly drive down the Kintyre peninsula and it would need a helluva lot of investment to cope with increases, especially road freight.

An alternative route to Stranraer would have it cross Beaufort's Dyke, a 50km long trench with over 1 million tonnes of explosive ordnance and munitions dumped into it after World War 2. Nasty.

It’s taken years to agree to build a bridge from Renfrew to Yorker about a 1/4 mile at 90 million pounds so be ready for a long wait and upto 100 billion pounds for a bridge to be built .

I'd love to see it happen but 50 million sound very little for such a crossing.

I'm over several times a year for Rallying and car collections and deliveries so I'd use it for sure.

Must go find out more as I dont follow politics much.

Not feasible for many reasons such an unmapped discarded munition dumped in the sea 150 tonnes of them and also the depth of the sea make it totally unrealistic.

You do realise the Queensferry crossing cost 1.35 billion for that short span.

The Edinburgh to Glasgow electrification of the railway cost 782 million .

This bridge will never be built, more fool anyone that listens to Boris try and sweeten Scotland with an insane proposal like this. I don't support independence but this is clearly an attempt at quelling the independence rumblings. It's so farcical it's laughable.

In theory I think its a good idea and if we had plenty of money to splash about. It would boost the economy with the bridge and associated upgrade of The infrastructure. Unfortunately as a nation who have wasted all the money we made from oil (unlike Norway). We need to spend that money elsewhere.

You’d think the government didn’t have accountants the way they start at one figure for public spending and it ends up way over budget! Edinburgh trams started at £375m and ended up at £776m. The Scottish Parliament started at £40m and ended up at £414m.

Both governments (Scottish and Westminster) should start by being more in control of budgets and contractors. They should be held more accountable when projects go over budget and completion dates.
