"Morning all. This might be longish. I recently joined the gym again after nearly 8 years away from it. Life has changes some what from the last time round meaning I don't have the same free time. I only use the gym for resistance training and run and cycle outside, apart from warming up. I'm finding that doing the usual 3 or 4 sets of the same exercise with a short break is taking to long. Can I do for example a shoulder exercise straight into a leg exercise. Maybe do 3 exercises for both musle groups going from shoulders tp legs. In essence 6 exercises in total set up in a round and repeat say 4 times? I'm not looking for a body building typre result. More of a toned athletic type look. Thanks in advance." You need to do large compound movements. Exercises such as squat to over head press or using kettlebell sets again squat halos

"As Byron said compound full body exercises, focussing on particular muscle groups is for those already in great shape and looking to go competing." I wouldn't say "focusing on particular muscle groups is just for people in great shape and looking to compete" it depends what you are actually looking for, if your saying you have a limit to how much time u can spend etc your always going to be limited to how your going to look in regards to how physically developed you'll be but you can still achieve a fit athletic look with basic compound exercises and cardio.

"Your gym will have instructors there that should be able to give you a set work out to suit your needs if you explain what your looking for." I've joined the Gym Group gym which is much cheapness. If you want a plan you need to pay over and above the fee to their own PTs.

In the same boat as yourself. Hadn't been in gym for 20 years always found them a bit intimidating back then. I lost 3.5 stone from Dec to July this year and decided to join a gym and get toned, a bit more definition and generally fitter. The gym I joined had a 30 day starter program that was tailored to what you wanted to achieve. And after that the results were measured and the next 30 day programme sorted. Speak to the instructors and ask for advice. If it costs a bit extra it is worth it to get the results you want. Also to reiterate what others have said get the form right first. Also classes are good I go to a stretching class to exercise the whole body not just the targeted sections All the best with it. Enjoy the journey.

"Cheers for the replys folks. Like I said I'm not looking to get big, just add a bit of shape and size to what I already have, loose a bit of body fat. That guy Joe Wicks seems to get good results from doing short sharp circuits of resistance work. I'm getting back on the bike and running to." There are fitness coaches and then there are fitness coaches (back alley pharmacists). Stay away from personal trainers, they’ll take your money and offer nothing worthy in return. If you go to bodybuilding.com there are lots of routines you can try. The only thing that really matters though, are compound lifts, diet and form.
