"It is in my nature to be caring, thoughtful and polite. I've come to the understanding that not everyone likes a compliment but when I see someone on here that makes my jaw drop I have to compliment. As for the real world i'm the person that holds the door open for a lady but I feel that it is not accepted in today's climate. Genuine courtesy seems to be seen as viewing someone as weak. It sad to think kindness and manners are no longer a thing. " Don't change, very few people like yourself left

Courtesy costs nothing. I'm not changing because it wouldn't feel right.

"Holding a door open, regardless of who it's for, is what most decent people do. It doesn't mean you're anything special " Straight to the point - love it!!

"Totally disagree ^^^ hold the door open for me and I am totally jumping your bones (tongue-in-cheek). It’s the small things that make a difference. Good manners and courtesy go a long way " That's what I say, those little gestures might make someone's day. The person you are especially with will certainly appreciate it.

"Holding a door open, regardless of who it's for, is what most decent people do. It doesn't mean you're anything special " This. Courtesy towards others is where one should be as a baseline. It's not a selling point in of itself; it should come as standard. Far too many profiles lament the fact that they are 'nice' or 'genuine' but get little response. If that is the ONLY thing about somebody, I'm not interested in the slightest. It's basically stating they meet the minimum criteria for normal human behaviour. Whooo.

God, I wish more folk understood this. You're a nice guy, great, but all you've told me there is you've got the very basic trait of human decency. Just 'nice' isn't a personality trait, it's the base of what people should be. On the subject of holding doors etc., there's nothing wrong with courtesy and being helpful, just don't follow it with a leer or an unsolicited 'there you are my sweetheart', and you're fine. Women don't actually have a problem with men being nice to them, the problem lies with the expectation and/or entitlement that too often follows.

"Think the modern up to date version is, yup i will hold the door open if yer in a hurry, carrying stuff and not delaying either of us. But if your one of these phone addict zombies with your head in your phone completely unaware of your surroundings and people around you, i kind of return the gesture and act like im unaware of you too, " Them phone addicted zombies are just fellow fabbers trying to get the next meet sorted

Must be a hard life when all you've got to moan about is that some poor guy was considerate enough to hold a door open for you!

"I tend to do likewise as the OP however less nowadays as I’m tired of the crass replies and genuinely being viewed as weird or suspicious !! Sad that the act of complimenting is lost on many and is not a vain attempt to take things further " Where is any kind of chat supposed to go after saying thanks for a fickle compliment?
