Hey I'm going to get my motorcycle licence and I'm getting my step dad's old Honda cbr600f super sport. Does anyone have tips or story's about their bikes/riding

Never skimp on the safety gear! We ride off road (enduro) and have been saved a good few times by forking out for all the extra padding.

Excellent good luck OP. There’s a bikers forum and a few of us head out regularly and a certain lady has her eye on similar bike she might try and persuade you to part with it lol

Just don't go mental at first. Build up some skill and then join the IAM to learn how to ride smoothly and safely. Don't ride if you are wound up and stressed out, tired or hung over. You always need to be alert and focused.

Gear wise, spend as much as you can budget for, spend well on decent gear and this should last for many years. Just take your time rith riding, gain experience.. You never stop learning.. But most of all.. Enjoy your riding..

Depends how much you value your body.

Cheap shit wont last while your sliding down the road so market for good helmet, gloves, boots, leathers or textyles.

As most have said buy the best kit you can afford and ALWAYS wear it I have had 2 near fatal accidents on bike (one I was actually clinically dead for 3 minutes) and Most likely only survived as I had my kit on. No matter how hot the weather or how short the ride, No matter how good you are or think you are you will come off second best no matter whose fault an accident is.

I was £70 for first helmet just make sure it has all proper certificates, £60 jacket £40 trousers and £50 for boots and £30 gloves, went for armoured textiles(goretex) my second helmet wasn’t expensive either £45 same brand just upgraded version with built in visor. I’m looking at buying more and looking at second hand more expensive brands but tbh the ones I’ve got are ideal, can easily spend £300 on a full set of leathers off the shelf or £800 for made to measure but if you’re like me I like change and having plenty of choice, if you plan on going on track etc then a one piece or sets that zip together is essential, leather is more likely to come out any scrapes and still be wearable over goretex which will still do the job of protecting you but prob need to go in the bin after if you end up sliding

My helmets are LS2, jackets rksports, gloves are tuzo, boots are sports maxx and the jacket is non branded

J & S are a good shout, they do their own brand of stuff which of pretty decent. My trousers and jackets are either RST or Alpinestars, can always picked them up for decent prices in the sales. My helmet is an AGV.

J & S have a great range of bike gear, they will do a helmet fitting for you and you can try on the trousers, jackets, boots etc.

Don't go nuts put its a big bike with power. Remember your "life saver looks"

And dress for the slide not the ride.

Hate seeing fellow riders without proper gear.

Helmet, gloves, boots, trousers and jacket (textile or leather) or a one piece suit. Minimum

Don't fall for the it's only a short ride I'll be fine in jeans.

And most of all enjoy. Had my license years now and would never be without a bike

Same as the rest. Buy the best safety kit you can afford. Lower budget is RST and it’s great. I’ve bought it for years.

But good trusted tyres, and service the bike regularly, learn about the mechanical workings; pressures, chain tension, cables etc

Soon as you pass, do additional training. You won’t have developed any bad riding habit and it’ll teach you to think ahead and do it naturally.

Stay on an “easy” bike to gain confidence / competence within yourself.

Go riding with experienced riders, people who will ride with you not ride you off.

Ride in all weathers, it’s scotland and you can have just as much fun in the rain being cautious as a warm summers day pinning it.

No#1 rule have fun!
