Dealing with depression

Hiya. Purely off topic but I was just wanting to see if any has been battling depression and if they have any advice on coping mechanisms. First of all I’ll just put out there before any smart arses tell me I’ve not lived long enough to have depression, you are entirely wrong. As a kid i grew up well below the poverty line my dad was a smack head who done the usual Scottish dad and went away. My mum was t a junkie or anything but she is absolutely bananas and I still struggle to maintain a healthy relationship with her. There is many more details that I shall not mention. Cut a long story short I have been battling depression since the tender age of twelve. Pills don’t work nor does counselling. I apologise again but I am relatively unknown on this site and I feel much less judged posting on here as my friends and some of my family have no clue about this. They still think I’m the wise cracking funny cunt. I guess appearances can be deceiving. Any advice is much appreciated and I would thank people who feel like trolling this post to not bother.

There are many mechanisms available, it could be as simple as going to gym/walking dog (I used to do both) or any form of exercise to get the happy endorphins flowing. Another way is to go dancing even though you don't feel like it (again to get the endorphins going)

But the main thing is try and keep busy, I found that I felt worse when I had nothing to do and I had time to think/wallow in it.

Good luck and if everything else fails make sure you have someone who can listen and use them as often as you can

As a Scottish dad myself, taking no offence to my own choice of words, I suggest you don’t post on this forum if you have no advice or anything useful to say. Cheers bud

Cheers mate. I do plenty of exercise and I work almost every day exercise does help to an extent but the effects are often short term. Thanks for your advice though

And yeah as previous poster said do activities, surprising how therapeutic certain exercises can be and how good you feel afterwards, hobbies to focus on, find your closest most understanding friend to open up to, if it gets bad then you need someone to talk to but if non of your friends are decent enough to understand then talk to a professional, that's what their there for.

Seek professional advice and help. NHS24 and even local GP practice. Not the views of folk on a swing site.

I'd like to offer you a few words of support as your story is similar to mine. You are still at a relatively tender age and this would be the time to find the right way ahead. Sometimes, the dosage needs adjusted, sometimes you simply need the right counsellor if counselling hasn't been productive. Don't discount either just yet.

You may have to be prepared to stick at it for many years as there is no quick and easy cure. Learn all you can about the brain (as it's all chemicals), accept that you're not well, do the things that nourish you (whatever they are), look after mind and body and hopefully, in time, you will feel the weight begin to lift.

Don't mean to preach. It can be a long road but there is a way through. You deserve a good life. I wish you the very best.

This isn’t really the place to expect nor to seek advice. If you’ve seen GPS and had councillong you’ll be aware that there are better sites and forums where you will not be judged and get better advice. There are people here that could, but then there are others that might mess with you.

Good luck.

I actually can't believe the advice you are receiving.

Therapy works wonders although not for everyone, ive suffered from depression for a lot of years due to the stillbirth of my child.

Pills mask the problem so I'd say seek help from nhs experts.

The only thing for therapy to work is starting at the beginning opening up old wounds. But when you bypass that clouds lift.

I was off my pills until last when another tragedy struck in my life had them six months & went to a therapist again I'm no being weaned off the pills.

Please contact crisis team or gp asap tell them everything.

Good luck & hope you are sorted soon.

This site is probably not the best site, but I've come across several friends who have gone through depression.

Coping strategy is very individual, and really it comes down to, the outcome is what you set your goal to.

Sure you have had a bad upbringing, but so have many. If you're determined to do better and achieve something, then let go of the past. New people won't judge you. New people won't know you're upbringing.

Build a social network, whether it's work or joining a class/club etc. Smile, be selfless and let your past define you.

.

Just my two pence.

First of all no one should have to justify how they feel. Accepting your feelings are valid for you is important.

Secondly everyone copes in different ways, some might appear to function better than others at times. It's all about realising everyone experiences things differently.

Work out the things that make you feel safe and use them as a starting point to create your own tool kit of things to help. .

Be kind to yourself .

Depression doesn’t discriminate, age, religion etc best coping mechanisms are to talk about it and try and find things to keep you busy, a healthy diet and lots of sleep can help as can exercise, before I had fibromyalgia my fox for my depression was very much my work and getting about now it’s harder to keep on rack when I’m in pain all time

It depends on the form of depression in which you have. If it’s bi-polar then medication is your first port of call.

The other forms from clinical/situational depression is mainly about distracting yourself. (gym/walking/new hobby/learning an instrument) trying to learn some cbt therapies can be helpful if you’re not able to see a psychologist for therapy ( I recommend the book ‘the happiness trap’ for this )

The best idea would be to ask your GP to refer you to the mental health team if you’re struggling. I’ve never found anti-depressants to work neither, hopefully you can get some input from psychology or the psychiatrist of medication is necessary. (not anti-depressants)

In the meantime, avoid alcohol, it makes things worse. Try to get out and mix as often as possible. I know that this sounds incredibly basic, unfortunately there are no “cures” though. If you try to think of the triggers and causes of your depression to let your GP/mental health team know; they can try and figure out the best way to help you.

Hope things get better for you man. In the meantime, try some Netflix and chill

London - till 25th

If you are employed, check and see if your employer provides independent councillors.

It might be quicker to access than the NHS, sad I know.

I went through a serious situation, where I wanted to punch my bosses lights out for being an utter penis.

Walked away got doctors line, sought employee counselling - was back at work 8 weeks later.

Helps out there, sometimes in unexpected places.

NHS services are patchy and often utterly shite.

It could take years to find the right combination of medication, therapists, coping mechanisms. Not meaning sound down beat but it’s the reality. Therapy is a relationship that you have to build and work on to see the benefits and it might not be the first cpn/therapist/psychiatrist you see that works for you.

Different medications work differently for people, one person may find citaloptam great but the next has no effect for.

It’s hard work and there is no easy answer.

All the best OP, takes courage to write up a post like this. One of the best things you can do is confide in your friends. Trust your pals and let them help you. Engage with them, chat in your groups, do things with them, get involved with things. It's better than any medicine, but I appreciate everyone has different views on what helps them.

Worst thing you could do is stay at home all day on your own, doing nothing with no company and support network.

Good luck.

Try mindfulness. You can download it as an app.

What do you like doing? Singing, dancing, painting, walking, etc. Find something you enjoy doing. I went back to tap dancing and you can’t think about anything else as you have to concentrate on the steps and the choreography.

As noshrinkingviolet says depression doesn’t discriminate with age, gender, religion, etc. Find a group or someone you can talk to. Hopefully you can find the right support.

Feel free to PM.

Much good advice up there OP. Hope some of it helps, you sound a wee tad angry BUT that’s natural after all you’ve suffered. You also sound a highly intelligent and aware individual. Life is not vindictive - we all catch a shit bullet. Some are unlucky(???!!?) and catch a few. I am a strong believer that those that suffer most can make the strongest, bravest types that help others because they really understand the human condition... perhaps that’s where your destiny lies... or maybe I’m taking pish but in any case I admire your spirit, try and use it well and don’t repeat the cycle like many do

From personal experience talking helps.

I find it incredibly difficult to discuss with my friends or family as I worry about "burdening" them with it so instead I talk to professionals. It may be just my thinking but they are trained to understand and won't be surprised by how you feel or what you say. That detachment makes it easier for me.

If your employer has employee assistance program they can help. Your local health authority will also have mental health services There also services such as Breathing Space who I have used and will do again when I need too.

Just don't keep it to yourself. Talk about it. There more people who want to listen than you ever think

Sorry to hear of bad up bringing like many others , clearly missing the building blocks of life that defines us all as we get older .And please no anti depressants tabs they are shit and don’t work as for counselling as a one to one can work however your brain is telling you the answers part from the counsellor. Its about avoiding social media , telly etc as that what triggers of depression so avoid .Try and go out with good mates or partner as present they are the most important people in life and you can not change the pass not matter what but you can do better .As from your past sadly we can’t pick are parents so move on , Like others from past and present you just wanted to be loved but sadly building blocks of life never happen for you .Stick in and chin up will get batter day by day . Wish you well

Everyone has a different path to recovery and different timescales.

Meds work for some, counselling for others and a mixture of both for a few.

One thing you can look at though may not be relevant to you is looking at the people you surround yourself with. Sometimes others can drag us down and in order to heal we need to distance ourselves from some.

There are also peer supports from agencies like SAMH and sometimes peer support is more beneficial as you feel they can relate better to you than professionals.

There are so many different ways to battle poor mental health that it would be impossible to go through them all but good for you reaching out for help I hope you find the right path for you

Hey mate,

whatever this site is, its also a forum to post what you may choose to and superb to the people that have replied.

Depression, hard one for each individual on how to manage it or where to turn to.

You've made the first steps so bravo on that.

I'm not a professional in this field, but i do give my own formula to others i meet or converse with on a daily basis, on how i manage my own gig. Its up to them to take what they want from it and go for it if they choose to. But more of i listen and try and find another solution.

Life is hard, with all its ups and downs, its never gonna be plain sailing. But we have loads of choices to just make it that wee bit or even a big bit better, when it gets too much, more of we just fry, crumble and look into that shitty abyss of our own thoughts and with no way out.

Hey, we're human, and everyone has been there at some point.

So your not the only one.

But we have a choice!

Either we get deeper into it, or we fight.

Me!

I'd rather fight. We have one gig here, so make it count.

Talk to people, family, friends, co-workers or more importantly medical professionals on you, on how you really are at this point. You might just be surprised at the help that's out there for you from them and some good advice to keep you from slipping and keep you up.

If some of them are not accessible for any reason, then there's a few places you can go to or contact. But here's one..

Mind the Men..cracking charity..and its brilliant. Has drop in meets about Glasgow.

And a website to contact.

Look it up..go for it and fight back for YOU!

Depression is a horrible thing for anyone. As with any illness.

Go for it.

And as it goes.

I have a tattoo which i look at everyday, it works!

It reads...

It's not about forcing happiness;

It's about not letting sadness win.

So go for it..

Hi. I'm new to this site but not new to dealing with people with depression.

Although depression is classed as medical under mental health , depression is a state of mind and the only way to change your state of mind is to retrain the way you think.

If you are holding on to anger , hurt , sadness , disappointment , you need to get it out and let it go before it destroys your young life anymore and your future . You need to learn that it's your life now and your past was exactly that, you can take control of how you want your life to play out. Our mind is a very powerful thing , that powerful that the bad can almost destroy people and it effects your health causing more health issues but ita also powerful enough to take control and change your life for the better but you have to start at the beginning ....

But firstly .... Your health diet , fitness all need to be on form. How we eat, keep fit control how our body functions and how we all deal with things good or bad.

Medications mask problems they don't cure or fix ,they mask them In a way that your problems, feelings, thought are put on hold and slowly they build up until you are at a point of no return . Upping meds to further mask problems ,this is a big issue that medical professionals are failing their patients on.

Talking to councellors can sometimes feel uncomfortable and you may feel Thier silence or questioning is judgemental so people tend to withdraw from that and refuse further help.

Anyway on to the importance of your diet., Heard the saying you are what you eat . the food we eat is key , having a good balanced diet introducing your five a day to include fruit and veg every day helps with your brain function , keeping it balanced and keeping your body balanced and working in the order it should , too much and too little of anything is bad for you and your mind. Everything in moderation and that includes exercise, good diet and vital supplements if your body is lacking.

Our bodies work in sync, the machanics of our bodies work together , like a car , A car cannot go without petrol ( water ), oil ( blood) has to pump through the pipes( veins), it has to have and engine (heart) and all its little parts ,electronics (brain) spark plugs, filter, gasket etc ( organs , cells etc) so that the car can work and run properly. Without all these things the car will soon break down, battle to start up, start having other issues before it completely shuts down , our bodies are the exact same .

Our bodies need everything to work in sync in order for it to operate properly. If you are eating right and keeping fit your brain will start working right and how you see and deal with things will change , you will feel a change in yourself and have a happier more positive approach to life and how you deal with problems that arise.

Dwelling on the past is what alot of people do and this take people further down the dark while they struggle to find their way back to the light but retraining your mind to think differently as such... the past can not be changed , it happened but unless there is a time machine it cannot be changed even if there was a time machine how could you have changed anything being a little kids??? . You can hold on to the pain and let it ruin the rest of your life or you can let it go and move on with your life. Its not hard.if your brain is not healthy it will be hard to move on, this is reason to get fit and healthy for mind body and soul. This is first can not be done in reverse.

Once you feel better you can start by moving forward from the past but you need to be strong and work at it. People are stronger than they believe. So you need to believe in yourself for every negitive thought think of two positives that will shove the negitive away , you need to take care of yourself, be independent and do things in life that make you happy . If you want more help message me. I'm a social health and fitness entrepreneur, I help people like yourself . I was previous in the medical field. Be strong and then stay strong. We all have it in us

Depression is not a state of mind. Being sad/bitter/angry is a state of mind. Those are different from depression...

Good luck telling a diagnosed manic depressive that they should "just deal with it" and stop taking their medication

Well as others state you've done the difficult bit by reaching out. I've stopped taking tablets as like others say it masks the issue, but some need them to help it all depends on how bad your symptoms are. Mood juice is good as is the black dog on YouTube. Your not alone in how younger life has affected you, but it's how you let it affect you us the issue. Think positive thoughts and build up your self esteem then you can make in roads to a fulfilling life. positive thoughts at all times and try and set yourself a goal once a day or week. Your a survivor not a victim of that makes sense. Good luck, ping a message if you need to reach out.

A lot of good advice already mentioned, talking is always a good start, whether in here or anywhere, so well done for opening the conversation. I don’t think you’ve processed your adverse childhood experiences as of yet, that may take a long time. I’m a huge believer in exercise and healthy life choices. Maybe trying to pen down your story and how you are feeling through Poetry and Lyrics... etc.

All the best

Superb and bravo..

"

A very generous and considered contribution returns some faith.

Brings to mind a specific bit of advice/practice I was encouraged to try. Get yourself in to a relaxed almost mediative state. Then picture yourself as a young child. In your mind approach your younger self as an adult and talk to the child you. Give assurances. Be kind. Cuddle and walk hand in hand.

Sounds odd but it can work.

That makes sense. I sometimes look at my own kids who are still pretty young and realise how fragile we all are at that age. Everybody needs to be a wee but kinder to themselves I think.

Depression is a phycological state of mind. , Meaning how you deal with issues from past memories whather you control it or let it control you, feelings of low moods, that sunken feeling , hatred , sorrow, self harming it's all a state of how the kind works.

Your state of mind is your mood or mental state at a particular time in life that can effect your outlook in the future." I want you to get into a whole new state of mind" referred to by drs dealing with mental health issues such as depression.

Depression means a state of mind you are in all the time or any part of your life in which it has effected you and your lifestyle , in which one feels bad , anxious, let down and finds their whole life desperate. When a person is depressed their mind is in a wrong state . State of disrepair is the thinking by someone with depression.

Feeling sorry or pitty for their life is also a state of mind.

Eg some people deal with bad childhoods better than others, some never come to the thinking / feeling of depression as they decided their past does not defy who they are and the life they want for themselves or children. Their state of mind has turned a negitive into a positive by righting a wrong that was done to them .

On other hand a person with bad childhood beatings etc.. can easily keep looking back to the past holding on to that anger , hatred , sorrow and it becomes them .their mind finds it easier to linger/ hold on to past and let it ruin Thier lives because they haven't figured out to control their mind and the way it thinks.

As for medication. It does only mask the problem. Dealing first hand with the issue solves depression and helps you on your way to recovery. Thousands of people are on anti depressants, and thousands of people not understanding how medication works continue to take it which result in it not working or the need to up the dose.this is because our bodies need fuel.you can not take medication if your body is not healthy . You need to have a good diet, good weight for it to help in any way , help your body with a head start before medicating it . Just like you shouldn't drink on an empty stomach. You also shouldn't take medication on an empty stomach or an unhealthy body.

Anti depressants are a short term solution that was their intentions to mask the problem until you got health and diet up to scratch then you body would fight to fix itself and mind would heal.

I'm an ex nurse but when money became main priority and not the health and wellbeing on patients that didn't work for me . You can go ahead and believe the drs, still have that love for healing and making sick people healthy and be deluded by all that misconception but take a look at how many people come back from depression never having to take an anti depressants again because they are cured and tell me I'm wrong.

There are also charitible groups with real people going through the same problems issues as you and to talk to someone who knows how you feel and help each other get through it can be very good. You'll find you can give advice to others but find it hard to take your own advice and this will be same with other offering you advice. You will also build a social rapport dealing with issues and over time these issues will lesson. Be strong x

That’s more situational depression/borderline personality disorder. (sadness/anxiety/stress/ingrained pessimism)

You’re missing out bi-polar that NEEDS to be medicated. There is also major depressive disorders which are chemical rather than lifestyle based.

None of us are aware of the severity of the op’s condition. Advising him to go for a walk, eat healthy and avoid professional help is incredibly detrimental if he does have a severe depression.

I’ll admit, mental health professionals are patronising w*nks. He can merely get medicated if needed (not anti-depressants) or have a form of dbt/cbt/ trauma based therapy, that may be incredibly helpful.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects your moods, which can swing from one extreme to another. It used to be known as manic depression. ... depression – feeling very low and lethargic. mania (maniac) – feeling very high and overactive but on the same spectrum as ADHD with depression.

Its just been renamed like most mental health problems.

You are missing the point anyway. Nothing will help your body and mind if you are not healthy , good diet and getting yourself fit that's to be first steps or its pointless. Being medicated will not work to its full potential, what will happen is it will cause more health issues and not the problem/ issue it was designed for. So before long you have a list of health issues on a number of medications , some counteracting the other and causing more damage to your health and body. Ingredients here is what should be looked at and each individual ingredient and the effect on the body .

People in these states of mental health are not healthy , they might appear fit but healthy they are not. A healthy mind will never hit a depressive state so low they can not return from .

Your body is your temple, and the mind is a very powerful tool , use it right and look after it or it will fail you. (Not you but in general )

You have your own way of thinking and I have my way of helping that has proven to work and improve people's lives immensely , so I'm sticking to my way in helping people

What I'm getting from you is a mind that has issues of your own and reaching out for approval in the approach you take to be the right approach, that's not what I'm trying to do. Say your wrong and I'm right. Im saying to improve things improve health first before running to drs and being prescribed medication that might be the wrong medication, if you can avoid that path and do it naturally it's better for your body In the long run especially when you hit your 40 and all changes . Each to their own . Not all needs are the same because everyone is different.

Just be happy and stop argueing. Just agree to disagree with me or this arguement could go on for a long time . Men don't win arguements with woman.

travelling all over

My way of dealing with depression & anxiety is going to my happy place. What's a wooden shack out in the middle of nowhere having a fire listen too music to escape it all. Usually a night away seems tae work. Or I seem to open up more and talk about it with people I don't really ken. Just don't bottle things up and get it all off you're chest.

No point in arguing as each person is individual and one man's meat is another man's poison as they say.

People have already mentioned diet, exercise, keeping the mind busy, peer support, medication and speaking to NHS. These are all right if they suit the person affected.

On the point of medication not helping and making things worse I had a period where a few years ago I needed medication as I couldn't eat, sleep or work and lost 23lbs in a few weeks. I couldn't eat healthy as you suggest as all I could eat was plain crackers or ready salted crisps so for a few weeks until the medication took effect I survived on 3 plain crackers and a packet of ready salted every day. Once the medication took effect I started to eat properly again but I definitely needed the medication to get me to that stage.

As has already been said there are numerous ways to combat depression and poor mental health just not all of them suit everyone but at least the OP has plenty to think about now and hopefully he will find the best for him.

I'd rather have a look at some hot couples or females and carry on planning some kinky nights away from normal life but we can carry on if you insist but if you ever need a chat , get shit off your shoulders. Message me .not hitting in you I'm old enough to be your aunty

Uch, stop it. You’re just a youngster I do have some clothes that you could help get off my shoulders.

Honestly though, your advice is the standard from most mental health professionals. So I’m not disagreeing per se, just that medication and therapy shouldn’t be entirely ruled out. There are forms of depression where looking after oneself becomes nigh impossible.

There are also two forms of bi-polar, one being less severe (more major depressive moods) the other being a form of psychosis. (which is best advised to be medicated for)

There may be negatives, (lithium) though, they’re less severe than what can result from being detached from reality for months.

Just my two cents cutie

The Secret

Not so long ago I had a young staff member who was spiraling into a deep depression (was due to a PTSD incident). I went to my gp for advice as tbh Its not something I knew enough about. The gp was great and sent me away with plenty of material to research. Anyway, there was one piece of material which I was totally taken by..."The Secret".

The Secret is a book that talks about changing your mind set and that "if you think positive, positive things happen". The book is absolutely terrible, I struggled to read it, luckily it was on Netflix and audiobooks.....still terrible but managed a couple of chapters. Honestly it is very americanised and cheesy so a hard watch.

However, my staff member did get treatment and it turns out that she was given the book and it made a big difference to her. But not only did it help her, its concept stuck with me by accident too. Made me feel more positive and helped me achieve more too which actually helped my jump into starting my own business.

Anyway....I recomend to everyone to force yourself to watch a episode/chapter of a truly terrible cringeworthy series/book/audiobook.

My hat off to everyone in this thread btw. Keep it going.

The secret is good but it’s the exact same concept of psychology, the laws of attraction, and the writings in the bible ! It happens to us all the time, if were in a low place it seems like a snowball effect one thing after another, when were in a good place loads of good things happen at once, wait ages for a bus and three come at once !

Agree...that's why I struggled with it as you could see the basic psychology and repetition of the same concept over and over. But it good to hear and remember when times are low. Worked so so well for my staff member.

“Get behind me thee Satan” is in relation to negative/damaging thoughts.

The church are also the first to incorporate “counselling” into creating a healthy mind and dealing with intrusive thoughts. I enjoy theology, I find it incredibly helpful in compartmentalising difficult parts of life. I for sure would not recommend it to someone not in good spirits though.

I had not read this before my last comment. Forget “the secret” and go straight to plato’s republic.

The only self help book I’ve found helpful was one recommended by a psychologist - “the happiness trap”.

"Hi.

Because I mentioned religion?

The irony behind the practice of mental health is enough to make anyone giggle, even whilst in a fit of depression.

To create an entire corporate machine out of religious practices and, name it a “science” as the final f*ck you to the church, is hilarious.
