I honestly wish a top flight still playing football player would come out.

It would be great for the game great for anyone struggling to come out themselves and a great thing for sport not to have hidden !

Football players will get abuse for anything tho...hair ..girlfriends ..

It's when it crosses the line that's the problem.

Think most footballers have had abuse..well maybe too strong a word but chants.some see it as a sign there getting to the opposition which shows there a good player lol.

Justin Fashanu sadly had many demons. It certainly wasn't through fan abuse he took his own life.

I remember watching him at my club during his brief and time and he took far more abuse for his limited ability than he did his sexuality.

Not at all. but if they dont want 5o come out thats the player themselves choice not for any other reason. People have more rights in the workplace than ever before, no excuse other than they want to keep there personal life to themselves. Not having a dig at you goodie i just dont think we need any more ambassadors for this that or the next thing nowadays , its old news. But people still use certain things for there own advancement. Oh you dont have a female director in your company thats discrimination, nothing to do with the fact all females in the company are thick as mince.

Of you dont have a male receptionist, thats discrimination, nothing to do with the guys being neds from the suburbs of glasgow and cant string 3 words together.

An ambassador for gay rights, a current marquee player, is exactly what football needs to drag elements of the game into this century. In a sport where even at the highest level in the biggest games players are still being subjected to racist abuse from fellow professionals and fans. Football and its culture is still in the dark ages.

Of course no one should be made feel they have to out themselves and be the martyr but wouldn't it be great if some of the games biggest names who were gay felt strongly and boldly enough to make it known. Perhaps it'd make it less acceptable for those in lower leagues and amateur leagues to be subjected to Neanderthal type abuse.

My brother came out as guy about 10 years ago and I was the last person he told as he was worried how I would react and didn't want to disappoint me.

I have never been so ashamed if myself in my life that my own brother would think that of me.

Now I go once a month to his drag show and slag him off when I get chatted up more than him

Ive seen discrimination get harshly dealt with for over 20 years in the workplace , its more socially unacceptable than ever before and im all for it getting harshly dealt with , but i think its changing now , people are now starting a culture of making it pay. Telling companys if i dont get this or that im going to claim discrimination for x y or z.

Your footballers are not coming out for financial reasons not because of the fear of abuse. All about the money nowadays.

If that is indeed the reason then it's an even bigger problem in society than we'd like to think and not the 'minority' of fans or the 'minority' in society that you've alluded to.

I know a few young footballers who are gay but refuse to come out because it’s not

The done thing in the footballing world and clubs are prejudice. My own niece was hiding in the closet because she didn’t want to be judged as being a typical female footballer she was doing very well had a successful pro career and then only once she had injury and could no longer play her and her “boyfriend” split up and she came out with her girlfriend her “boyfriend” managed to find himself a “girlfriend” quite quickly but not before people started asking questions about him and he lost a sponsorship deal which has even been openly mentioned as being purely on the hearsay surrounding their relationship, it’s actually quite sad in this day and age

And these are pretty well known premiership teams they play/played for
