Or maybe the gods need to battle it out to leave us with just the one true God?

Dunno Torys and Trump are not religious so I'm thinking there is a fundamental flaw in your argument.

Also dont remember that geezer Hitler being in a church..and the Russian communist party banned religion as do the Chinese and vietnamese during that war...Few folk died there too.

Not saying your wrong just that your argument is flawed

Gods/God have been worshipped for thousands of years haha it will never end there will be someone believing!

Sometimes it’s a very good for an individual and can bring through hard times but the majority of times it’s just caused wars as history can tell haha

Don’t believe in God. But must have been something. Believe there is some form of life after death that lasts for so long in different signs sent to us from those who have departed from us

Dont think that's fair comment for the 1000s of priest and nuns (why not vicars, ministers, muslims or any other religious leader mentioned).

You are assume referring to sexual or physical abuse.

This could turn into a big long circular argument. The working houses where to be fair brought in by the state a d quite a few states to tackle poverty therefore in essence their presence was charitable, the selling or re-placing of babies (I may be wrong but never heard of the selling) was again a practice that was brought in and reflected society's views on children born of wedlock. This practice was again adopted by a whole host of states and religious organisations.

Your right to is wrong, however both where state sanctioned and reflected the moral views of the societies at the time.

There are some bad people in this world, some of them get jobs where they can act out there perverse life until caught or not.

I said if people truly believed and followed a religious life it would be more harmonious but the religious people who abuse and take advantage of vulnerable people are not following a true religion they are making up their own rules under the umbrella of god which is entirely different. So I still stand by my point that it’s not religion that makes atrocities it’s humans

Religion is like a penis. It is fine to be proud of it... it is fine to talk to people who also like it... but the second you get it out is public and start waving it in peoples faces, then we have a problem.

That aside, although it has it's many problems (controlling one of the biggest sources of income in the world. Being able to influence politics etc) it has helped many people. I don't personally believe in anything, but if I was proven otherwise (not by some book...) then sure, why not. So, each to their own, believe or not, it does not matter to me as long as your not forcing it on others.

You see I think we should treat fab like a pub

The pub is a social place..

A place where people from all walks of life and corners of the world can meet new friends and old friends alike..

Most people are in good spirits.. There’s usually some banter mixed with shite patter

Always some flirting and definitely some cheating

There will always been some arguments but most of the time everyone gets along and hey who doesn’t like a telling a few tall tales, a bit of banter some flirting and maybe even cheeky kiss at the end of the night

But like in pubs leave the politics and religion at the front door before you come in, because who wants to talk about either when you are trying to have a laugh!

I enjoy it as a family holiday but no longer go to mass or anything. Still think it's a nice time of year to be grateful for what you have and think of those less fortunate. Don't need Father Jack to remind me of that.

Easter...don't celebrate it as such. The kids get a couple of eggs. My eldest is a very shrewd wee thing though and even though he doesn't believe in God he laughs at how commercial it's all became. "Did Jesus invent chocolate eggs Mum? Naw? Didnae think so".

I’m still on the fence however I believe that if people have a belief that gives them hope and comfort and makes them better people for it then I’m all for it, I’ve been privileged to meet a lot of people who’s lives have been transformed by their beliefs in god and to me that can only be a good thing, part of me wants to believe in god and part of me can’t deny that someone surely must be responsible for creating life after all we are like blueprints that are manufactured but with free will, however what I don’t believe in and struggle with is organised religion, the more I learn about god and the bible the more I begin to realise my grandfather was almost likely someone who believed and lived his life very much like a Christian however he wasn’t a religious man, my beliefs are very much about treating others how I would expect to be treated and being a good person in general, all qualities learned from my grandfather. Having spent a lot of time over last couple of years going to churches and meeting with people from various religious groups I still very much keep myself to myself but am in awe of how much the belief in a higher power has truly performed for want of a better word miracles on peoples lives, or perhaps it’s the people who have touched their lives that show compassion and zero judgement and welcome them with love that’s the answer but even though I’m not a believer I even find your opening comment quite offensive

I do not believe in any god or gods that have been put forward by any religion or believer.

I am an agnostic atheist in the broad term of all gods but specifically a gnostic atheist with respect to most gods.

The reason for my non belief is that the burden of proof has not been met. I do not choose to not believe in a god, no one really chooses what they believe. You are either convinced or not convinced by a proposition.

If anyone past, present or future could show evidence for god either logically or empirically then i would have no choice but to believe.

"Here's me thinking Vikings had loads of God's??"

They do, I don't believe in them though.

They are similar to the gods of Olympus in that their gods were personifications of forces out of their control in order to attempt to answer questions that were all around.

"Why is there lightning?" - oh that's Zeus throwing his bolts or Thor smacking his hammer around etc.

People have always been bad at saying "I don't know" when presented with a question they don't have an answer to, despite it being the correct answer.

The scientific method has helped to lift the veil of human ignorance by demanding proof of or for the claims made. No ancient answer is beyond further questioning and when it comes to the question of "is there a god?" No one has brought forward anything tangible.

God is an ever receding idea clung to by people who are afraid to admit they don't know everything.

No, we trusted in the military and the population of our countries, huge numbers of whom gave up their lives. God had nothing to do with it.

The Nazis and their regime were supported by the Pope and church. The SS had "Gott mit uns" (god with us) as part of their uniform. If you read mein kampf, Hitler makes it crystal clear he thinks he's doing gods work. A point he doubled down on after they endorsed him and he Nazis.

How the hello in this day and age can people say they believe in a God!

"He wants everyone to bow before him or go to hell?? Its a myth, a lie, a load of shit.

A prayer ever answered?

Proof of life after death?

Noahs arc?

"

He wants mankind to treat each other, and the planet with love and respect. It’s the philosophy of mankind, that raises us to better ourselves and the world in which we live in. It’s unfortunate that there are ignorant sorts such as yourself, that judge upon that in which they do not know.

Jesus would have been a swinger if he were alive today, he did after all love a prostitute. Don’t hate on those that believe in something in which you do not. If you do, you have no standing when it comes to those knocking kilts, or swingers (heaven forbid).

There’s a whole generation with no clue of the religious relevance to these. A day where we drink n eat loads and get presents, is all it’s seen as being.

Anyway, Christopher Hitchens explains religion and beliefs way better than I ever could.

yup but it would have the same flaws as it does now and you would still have a large amount of folk claiming it was true by hanging on these Sciene types every word ......faith isnt the preserve of religion.

God or no God I think its a bit naive to think there is nothing. We are energy, made from the very same substance as the stars, energy doesn't just dissappear only transforms. There will be good and evil in the world no matter what, every positive has a negative, an opposite etc. Its balance and the scales appear to be tipping.

I’m conflicted about the whole god argument. I believe there is a force at work that shapes our lives and puts us on a certain path and decides when it’s time to die. I’m not sure if it’s one being though, there’s definitely more to our life than we know.

I haven't read the full forum post so apologies if I'm repeating what others say. I've never believed in God as in the guy with the beard and sandals - too many anomalies for me in that.

I do think... "God" or whatever you believe that thing is within us that makes us want to achieve, to do and be better, to strive to make the world a better place has been called "God". I also think power hungry and greed individuals all over the world have used it for personal gain. However many folk gain comfort from it and have done wonderful things because of it - as long as there is respect for each other then I also respect folk who wish to have religion in their life. Sadly I do think it will never be the case that human beings stop fighting over it.

Atheism is growing with more and more nonbelievers willing to openly say they don’t believe in a mythical being, I for one have felt more comfortable in the last few years being vocal about it.

When kids get to about 10 or 11 they realise Santa, the easter bunny, the tooth fairy and their imaginary friend aren’t real (and can be mocked for still believing as they get older) yet parents/schools still teach them about something that there’s no physical proof of.

Each to their own but religion should be like swinging acceptable with likeminded people but not waved in everyone face.

"Does anyone still believe in this fictional wanker? "

No he’s a fictional cunt, if god existed... horrible things wouldn’t happening, the believers say that these things are sent to test us, I’d say IF god exists then clearly the entity is one sick cunt with a sadistic side.

while the aspect of God(or religions), it's ok to have as a personal belief, but not when it has been twisted in ways for oppression and denial of basic scientific facts.

If people can use religion to humanity's betterment that's great, if not they should fuck off.

An interesting side note of King Leopold II of belgium, his disgusting colonial atrocities to the people in Congo was condemned by both the country's catholic party and labour party(asides international opposition).

There are plenty of christian scientists too, though unfortunately in bible belt circles these can often be ones that will omit facts to suit the biblical narrative, ie creationists.

in my own opinion, if there is a 'god' its most likely something akin to what a microbe in our body might think of us if it had any thought and probably pretty unaware we even exist.
