Debate # 4.1

Blantyre

When you reach 70 years old should it be compulsory that you are made to re-sit your driving test then on an ongoing basis, say every 3-5 years for example.

Forgetting costs as maybe concessions can be made on costs so just debating the actual principle of testing to make sure they are still fit and capable of driving.

Yes. So many older drivers get slower and overly cautious which is just as dangerous as boy racers.

Yes it should. My dad is 70 and still holds his HGV. The company that he does casual work for pay for him to be tested once a year.

He will give it up soon my mum is making him lol.

The annual testing should remain however I think is should be free if you intend to keep driving.

Seen a stat on the back of old Phil's crash last week that the boy racers are 4 times more likely to be involved in RTA's, so should they resit it too....?

Some are needing a re-sit well before 70, but agree there should be something in place once you get to a certain age.

Not sure if a driving test is the question but I do think some sort of reactions test

My dad turns 70 next year and he is an OK driver (not gonna mention my mums driving)

But maybe a test to check reflexes, judgement, vision n stuff like that would be better than sendibg them out in a car for a driving test (although it would he another revenue source for the dvla)

Yes. Anyone involved in an RTA should be re-tested.

That needs to be rethought.. What if you aren't at fault. I was sitting, indicator on waiting for a break in the traffic and someone ran into the back of me.. Should I need to be re testes because some wanker wasn't watching the road?

"Yes. So many older drivers get slower and overly cautious which is just as dangerous as boy racers. "

This is a great point, my father in law sits at 45-50 in the middle lane of motorways. Street driving is ok . Was nearly wiped out on a roundabout by an old lady going straight over the middle lane after starting in the left lane. On this occasion her slow speed gave me time to react but Mrs she Devil if driving would have had no chance.

I would say the person who caused the accident and found at fault should have too. If 50/50 then both. Nice little money earner for the goverment though so maybe we should all keep quiet before they decide to do it lol

Should resit driving test every 5 years I say, that goes for everyone. Learners should resit a second test a year after passing the first just to make sure they've not went down the stupid route of thinking they know everything

Should have different tests to pass when it comes to driving as I feel people pass the test in certain areas that are easier to drive in so they can pass easier then freeze in the city or busier routes

Don't get me started on motorway driving

I like to think I'm a good driver through years of experience but doesn't mean I'm perfect, far from it

John

Think that would be to far , a minor fender bender and even the one causing it gets re tested. Would cause havoc, not enough driving instructors just now so waiting lists would turn to years for tests. Judges sentence bans and order resit tests on the serious cases just now so it is happening .

Yes they should, the average weight of a medium car in the uk is 3.4 tons. Anyone in charge of a 3.4ton death machine should be retested under certain circumstances. Diabetics, sleep apnea, anemia not just old age. Until completely passed as safe, license should be suspended. There should also be higher penalties for people that already dodge the measures in place. Younger drivers can have this thing called "black box" insurance where they have a speed limit detection system installed in the car, if they go over the speed limit it automatically informs the insurance company and they get fined. More and more parents are choosing this for their kids, not sure I would though..

Maybe the gp could be called upon to reccomend retesting if they notice that your reflexes are becoming impaired.. I know they have to report if you have certain conditions already.

I think they should. I was driving up the motorway last year and there was an old woman driving down the wrong way. Luckily it was in a reduced speed 50mph zone so we all had time to react and move out the way. I could see in my rear view mirror she slowed down and done a bloody 3 point turn so she was facing the right way! Traffic was backed up waiting for her. She must have been confused coming out a junction that's solely for her house!

I am a defensive driver. I always consider that no matter how good a driver I am, or I think I am, there is always someone out there who is worse than me. It doesn't always work, although I've never been in an accident that was my fault.

Average weight go from just below a tonne for a wee one to 2.5-3.0 for a big 4 wheel drive .

Does it not kind of fall into place medically anyway? Folks get older, they get stuff going wrong with them and find themselves at the doctors more often, there the suitability to continue driving gets taken into consideration by the doc.

Joined the motorway the other day behind an elderly driver doing 28mph on the slip road too.

I’m sure elderly folks would ditch driving without a second thought if there was a fantastic dynamic public transport system to use instead.
