Self Photography tips and tricks

Jump to newest

Thought I would give some tips and tricks on self photography…

Hopefully others can add on to this. **couples can use some these when getting self shots.

Sooooooooo…Some of the same rules appy for self photography as well as taking photos of others. So it might sound like I am repeating my self….but keep reading….

1. TURN OFF the flash!!!! Flash makes skin look white and has a habit of making photos look like no thoughts in them. USE existing light, desk lamps, tilted lamps or even construction lights. Bounce the light of white walls or even colour walls for different color effects. Try light from the side (90 degrees, 45 and above.) DON’T use a flash in a mirror if you want the standard me in mirror photos.

2. USE A TRIPOD!!! If you can get your hands on a tripod…..use it.. or a stable place to put camera down and lined up….also stable….when you press timer…it doesn’t fall over. (make sure camera is level, and safe)

(Kitchen paper roll is a good mobile phone holder.....bend and sqweez as needed....also a bean bag (dried beans still in the plastic bag,,,,,or a plastic bag with sand)

3. DISTANCE: Look how far you have to move to get into position and take into account the pose you want to do. Do a few test runs and please keep any trip dangers out of the way (toys, CABELS, clutter, coffee tables and so on.)

4. BACK GROUNDS: please look at your back ground thought the camera lens. Nothing worse than a beautiful photo with children’s toys in back ground, ashtrays, mobile phones, medicine bottles or dirty laundry. (ppppssssttttt…everybody looks at photo back grounds and if carpet clean. Might want to run a hoover too)

5. EDGES OF PHOTO: take a look through your lens at the area you will be in and see the left, right, down and above limits. Wot can you use to remember the limits of the photo. (bed edge, head board, edge of table, curtain edge) something that you know in your head where your limits are as you position your self.

6. WHERE YOU WANT TO BE: your position in photo. I have a good trick that might help you. I use a peace of tape/masking tape, painter tape and so on. I tape it to where I want the middle of my back to be…..(kidney level). So when I hit timer, I run and position my back over the tape…my body covers the tape and I am in center of photo. Tape works also on walls, chairs, tile and so on. TRY: Bathroom, stairs, kitchen, living room…ect.

7. PREPERATION: Your should not have any tight clothing on 1-2 hours before the shooting (No underwear and bras)….leaves indentations on skin. (USE THIS TIME TO SET UP…I do it naked!!! WARM: the room should be warm and comfortable. There should be nearby bathrobe, incase the door bell rings…and for set up.

8. KNOW YOUR SELF; Where are you problem areas and insecurities. Try and work around these!!!!

9. IDEA and CONCEPTS: Know what you want to try Please think of at least 3 different poses before you start…...

10. SAFETY: Don’t do stupid things for the sake of getting startling photos….remember you are alone!!! Self bondage ONLY if you can get out really easy. Safety in the area you are shooting….

Specific tips

Initial poses – Keep it simple for first shooting. Don’t be afraid to make theatrics and abstract poses….you can always erase. Classic poses are sitting, reclining, and standing. THINK BACK WARDS: if you wanted to do a set when you are undressing….start nude…and put clothing on!!!! At end of shooting you should be dressed.

Black and white – Skin imperfections of the model can be easily hidden by using black and white. Besides this, black and white adds drama to the picture. (if using a digital camera….try and think black and white when taking color photos. Most free photo programs let you change colour photos to black and white.)

Add mystery – Some of the most attractive nude pictures are those that keep your identity a mystery. This can be done by using covers to partially obscure the face or by keeping your face turned away. (Masks, cloths, corsets, accessories, body parts, objects)

FOR THE MEN:

1. Penis photos: Great, if that’s all you want to show. BUT!!! Every woman I have talked to always say they would like to see more or the man. Women like Bums, Hands and chests. But most attractive photos are of your full body. (Remember, there are no Penis perfume commercials,,,,they all show a guy full body….even with clothes on. Wonder why?

2. Try and stay away from the shooting down penis photos. No woman looks at your penis from that perspective….only you.

3. Belly: Most of us don’t have the super 6 pack, try stretching, straitening back and also no profile photos.

4. Jewellery: If you are going to say you are single….take off the wedding band.

5. ERECTION: Sorry guys….need to talk about this. During my modelling, I understand the want of every guy to have his penis to look big even if not erect. Well guys….that’s just a fantasy….mother nature works against us. If you are trying to take some self photos and or getting your picture taken buy someone….you can be nervous and under stress. This is fight or flight reflex….in both cases….mother nature wants to protect the repoduction organ. The penis shrinks and testicals get pulled closer to the body. Then OMG…you look down and think…where did it go??? Then you make your self more stress and keeps the situation going…more stress. TIP: relax, warm and keep your wildest fantasy in your head. Try and remember not all nude male photos are with erections and we all don’t walk around with one 24/7. So relax and try to remember mother nature…..it helps to understand how your body is working.

FOR THE LADIES

1. Breast photos: Every guy likes to see breasts….. but think you are more than just body parts. If you have Larger hanging breast…don’t lay on your back with out supporting your breasts (cross arms under breast like push up bra).

2. Tummy: If you have a problem tummy and feel insecure about it. DO NOT Put hand on your belly….it attract the views eye to your hand and they know you are pressing tummy in. try stretching arms above head and or straighning, arching back. Clothing, playful sheet, towel is also a good cover up.

3. Stretch marks: Lighting and shadow angles can change this. Also clothing and cover up sheet, towel.

4. Less is more: Sometimes, not seeing something gives more hunger than seeing it. The strength of a women is mysterium.

5. Jewellery: If you are going to say you are single….take off the wedding band.

FOR COUPLES

1. don’t be afraid to show emotion and tenderness

2. use your partner to hide a few unwanted trouble spots

3. full nudes with nothing showing. Bent knees, hands of partners and resting heads.

The last words…..I wrote a lot again….LOL

If you like someone’s photos, don’t be afraid to ask how they did it….

Try and make photos that people like to look at, tell a story or you project a feeling.

Do something different!!! Try new things….dick and pussy photos are great to document your body parts….but everyone likes to see creativity.

DON’T BE SHY!!!! Everyone has a part of their body that they don’t like…. Work around it and don’t be to critical.

If anyone else has some tips, would love to hear them or post them here.

Hugs,

Lee

PS Besides the above preparation and nude photography tips, simply follow the conventional rules of traditional photography: composition, focus, and a story to tell.

"Great advice would luv to know the secret in how you do the black n white pix with a splash of colour lol "

In a photo program....make copy of photo...make top layer black and white...color under it. then use the eraser tool to erase the Black and white parts you want color...the color will show through. then when done....flatten image and save under a different name

Hope that helps....thats how I do it.

I use Photoshop.

I think I understand, but don't have the programme to do it. Apparently you can get a free version of photoshop called gimp or something - I'm honestly not making it up'! I could never get my head around it though.

LOL....I have taken photos of guys and also done nude modelling...

The willy is a sensitive subject with guys and Photography. (Girls....you can read this too!!!)

When men are under stress, mother nature built in a safety feature to protect the DNA and genitals.....So we can have sex later. SOOOOOOO....when we men are under stress, the body removes or constricts blood flow to the genitals in order to make it shrink....So it doesn't get hurt in battle...lol.

The DNA (testicals) then pull closer to the body and with some men even up inside the body as in orgasm.

COLD: If a man is cold.....it has some of the same effects as above.

So you have to Imagine....my Model (man) with this super stressed look on his face and looking down at his penis....then looking more stressed. He said to me...dont take any photos yet, it looks so small. A vicious circle in his head. he was UNDER STRESS!!! so told him to take a 10 min. break and just relax, we are not here to take photos of your penis...but of you, the man. (and I told him to concentrate on feeling like a man, and replaying the best sex he ever had or best fantasy he has). Being a man is not about the penis....but its the whole subject in photography, the mussles, hair, tatoos, the look, the back ground.

Sooooo....big tip if the hydraulics are failing during photography. remember how your body works and see where your stress is. relax!!!! and try new things with your thinking. (if that don't work...a little manual stimulation between photos is a good trick).

Hugs,

Lee

PS: OH!!!! forgot....the stress also goes away with getting use to taking photos....so keep at it and you can always erase the ones you dont like.

In Germany, I put my self through nursing school taking private photos or people. Wot I did learn....try offering couples to take photos of them. this builds TRUST. This also takes stress off husbands and you open your self up to more people. Also word of mouth....if a couple is happy with your photos and felt comfortable they will come back. but more important....they will also tell others how you are. And there are always ladies that want photos for Single sites, FaceB. and other internet purposes. (Also look around you, friends....tell them you would like to try taking some half nudes or nudes....50% of the time they will say sure....you would be supprised)

Hugs,

Lee

Very informative thread & it certainly can make a difference if a profile contains some good pics. I sometimes wish our gallery did, but most of ours are taken in the throes of passion & as a last thought/not the first thing in our mind when taken.

The tips might get us to put some thought into some new ones.

To the OP

Great advice, I've not seen this post before as I rarely spend much time in this forum.

I have been playing with photography on and off since my teens but a refresher is always useful

I'm pretty sure a lot of people, regulars in the other forums, will have missed this too, could you please repost this in swinging advice or similar which has a wider audience, as it is some of the better photography advice I have seen collected in one post here.

There are many who would benefit from it! LOL

Thanks

Al
