I believe that people who don't like sci-fi are lacking in imagination, as the good stuff tends to be allegorical, and looks at our own world, and the human condition in a way that a straight drama can seem preachy.

for the older sci-fi films you look at them and see if they still have an effect on you today and how the younger generation think of them.

'Alien' is the bomb, does everything it says on the tin, scary as shit. The same for 'Aliens', not "where will it come from" this time they are everywhere, this time is war.

'Fifth Element' just fantastic rollercoaster film, good giggles and amazing cast and models and wardrobe designs.

'Bladerunner, the final cut', wow, atmospheric and watching Rutger Hauer talk to Harrison ford just before he dies, epic

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

'Serenity' just a class sci-fi film

All above and more I could watch and watch time and time again.

Some of the films listed I love, Even the Star Trek ones with Chris pine

Idiocracy. It's more of a comedy/ sci-fi with the main theme being that as technology becomes more advanced the human race becomes less and less intelligent. The frightening thing is that it was made like 15 years ago but so many of the predictions are spot on.
