Please, can we have peace?

I hope that for the duration of the Two Minutes Silence, there will be no posts, as we take time to those who died, and those who returned home, especially the ones with shattered bodies and minds, not only in the Great War, but in all subsequent wars our armed forces have fought in.

Support the troops, not the wars.

I didn't realise until yesterday that the armistice agreement was actually signed at 6am on the 11th. But the ceasefire wasn't to be called until 11am. Almost 3,000 troops on all sides died between 6am and 11am when the guns fell silent. Perhaps the saddest most pointless deaths of all

Michael Palin made an excellent BBC Documentary, "The Last Day of WW1", on just that point. There are some heartbreaking stories told. So many families received telegrams whilst celebrating peace, telling them loved ones in those last days and hours.

I only found out yesterday that 16 million people died in ww1 with the total estimated casualties was around 37 million. I had really no idea it was that many x

A lot of men died for nothing on the last day many being due to generals wanting to teach the enemy a last lesson not that they were in any danger but to these types men lives did not matter there was an inquiry after the war but little punishment for the gungho generals involved, on the tombstones of those that died the date of death was changed as men were dying right up till the last minute due to those that did not care.

Generals were in danger as well. Over 200 were killed, injured or captured during WW1. They were a lot closer to the front line than todays Generals.

People show their respects in whatever way they are comfortable. My way is to be EXTREMELY proud of my children and their choices in life and support them in All their decisions and sacrifices. Trust me when i say its not only the dead that pays the price of being in the military. Its not just a job like normal people where you come home and watch tv after work. Its a way of life with a new family where you dont get to see your real families for months or years on end. Theres NO right or wrong way to show our respects, everyone should think aboit that , before commenting on others choices.

Soldiers, sailors and airmen along with civilians died for days after the armistice, not everywhere along the front lines complied, some weren't informed of the ceasing of hostilities.

Apparently sections of the eastern front saw the same hand to hand butchery until the 14th November 1945

There are no surviving Great War veterans, those who march now served from 1939 onwards, and sadly, we still have soldiers, sailors and airmen from "post war" conflicts to remember, and their comrades will still march.

Marched yesterday with a colleague whose service was pre 1939.

But there were only 8 of us in the Legion contingent. (plus 4 in the colour party)

I am the youngest by a decade or 2.

Whilst there were ex-servicemen and women in the crowd, they were not on the parade.

I can say hand on heart the need to showboat is imo cringeworthy. As some have said it appears to be more about proving how good you are than about actual remembrance.

I remember daily I give what I can when I can without the need to inform anyone and everyone.silence is a mark of respect I don't know what shouting from a hilltop is though

I got my father's and grandfather's medals and shoulder flashes mounted in frames that hang on my bedroom walls.

I always go to remembrance parades and think on my 18 yo father landing in Normandy or both my grandfathers in the trenches.

I will never know what they went through but it was very telling when I offered to take my father back to France and all he could say was "I cant".

Lest we forget what those boys went through.

I can say hand on heart the need to showboat is imo cringeworthy. As some have said it appears to be more about proving how good you are than about actual remembrance.

I remember daily I give what I can when I can without the need to inform anyone and everyone.silence is a mark of respect I don't know what shouting from a hilltop is though"

I was talking about those that were well back and ordered men to go over the top when the war was finished anyway except for the few hours waiting Most officers stood the men down but not those that wanted to teach the Germans a final lesson with the lives of their own men. There was around 50 to 60 killed not many in the trenches but back behind the lines and killed by artillery that overshot.
